3 1. Introduction This prospectus provides information on the range of shared academic and vocational courses available for Key Stage 4 pupils in Richmond upon Thames schools. The providers who have contributed are: Grey Court School Kingston University Orleans House Gallery Richmond Adult Community College Richmond Education Business Partnership Richmond upon Thames College Richmond Youth Partnership St Mary s University College The Richmond 14 to 19 Partnership The partnership works through the Curriculum Development Group with representatives from all schools and colleges to plan shared provision for all Richmond borough students. This will broaden curriculum opportunities, giving more options to progress through the 14 to 19 phase. The individual learner is the focus of curriculum development and associated joint working. There is now a clear focus on offering young people access to courses that lead to progression in local colleges or apprenticeships and employment. We are now working closely with local universities, through the Aimhigher partnership, to provide opportunities for young people to gain an insight into university courses and university life. This is particularly aimed at young people whose parents did not attend a higher education course. This prospectus is primarily intended for those senior staff in schools responsible for planning the curriculum at Key Stage 4 and communicating option choices to pupils, parents and staff. The courses shown in this booklet should be uploaded by each school onto their pages on A summary of the courses is shown on page 17. It will also be of interest to supportive services that help and advise students making choices for Year 9 options. These include: subject teachers of students in Years 9, 10 and 11; staff who help learners to make choices about their courses in Key Stage 4; mentors, coaches and learning support assistants working in Year 9; staff in the Richmond upon Thames College and the Richmond Adult Community College; Youth Service; Connexions personal advisers; and all supporting services. 1

6 4. Diplomas available to all schools Diploma in sport and active leisure The Diploma in sport and active leisure will be available to all students in Richmond upon Thames. One day a week will be at Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC). If needed, extra week-long blocks will be included for external courses like coaching s. The course consists of: Principal learning units covered at RuTC: Sport and active leisure as part of a healthy lifestyle. The importance of participation in sport and active leisure. How the active body works. Introducing the sport and active leisure industry. Working with different types of customers in sport and active leisure. Additional and specialist learning At each level, you can develop your particular sport and active leisure interests further by taking specialist courses relating to your chosen subject and career ambitions. Examples of these are: Level 1 Certificate in coaching and Level 1 Certificate in health and fitness. You can also take GCSE subjects that reflect your other interests and career ambitions. Functional skills At school you must pass level 1 functional skills in English, maths and ICT. Personal, learning and thinking skills All Diploma students will develop personal, learning and thinking skills, such as team-working, creative thinking and self-management. Student projects During your Diploma, you will complete a student project to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have learnt. Work experience Your Diploma will give you the opportunity to do at least 10 days work experience. What s happening now? The students doing the Diploma this year have enjoyed learning in an applied manner. They have particularly liked doing a five-week scuba diving course, they have been able to apply what they have learned about the respiratory system, planning and leading a sporting event. This course will allow them to gain their PADI and be able to dive in open water. The students have also enjoyed the way that they are being assessed they have had to make an information video about the systems of the human body rather than having to write essays and answer questions about them. What can it lead to? A Diploma in sport and active leisure will give you the skills you need to progress to higher levels of learning at further education (FE) or work and is a first step towards a career in the sector. It could lead to a university degree in subjects such as sports science, sports management, sports development, sports therapy, or events management. Alternatively, it could help you begin a career in the active leisure industry or working with established sports institutions. This could be anything from sports centre staff to running a fitness club or as a leader in an outdoor activity camp. However, the Diploma in sport and active leisure doesn t mean you have to choose a career in this sector. Because a Diploma teaches a mix of subjects, it will give you the skills that will be welcomed by colleges, universities and employers, no matter what you choose to do.
