7 Brisbane s inner-city university We have two campuses located within two kilometres of Brisbane s CBD. Transport QUT s campuses are well serviced by public transport, and Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses are linked by a free shuttle bus. Gardens Point campus boasts its own ferry stop and is a short walk from central city train stations and close to all city bus services. The Goodwill Bridge, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge, links the campus to several cultural precincts. Kelvin Grove campus is conveniently linked to the city and suburbs by a dedicated public bus network. Gardens Point campus With almost students, Gardens Point campus is a prime location in Brisbane s city centre, beside the Brisbane River, City Botanic Gardens and Parliament House a position that reinforces QUT s links with business, industry and government. The Science and Engineering Centre brings together teaching and research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. It also includes stimulating learning and research spaces, food and retail outlets, and a 50-metre swimming pool and gym. The Gardens Cultural Precinct presents a full theatre and exhibition program including student productions in acting, dance and music, and works by visiting Australian and international companies. Kelvin Grove campus Kelvin Grove campus, with almost students, is situated two kilometres from the city centre. The campus is part of the Kelvin Grove Village, a master-planned community that brings together residential, educational, retail, health, recreational and business opportunities. The campus is a vibrant community with excellent research facilities. QUT s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, a collaborative research institute, is dedicated to solving the health problems that affect Australia and our neighbouring communities. QUT Health Clinics provide quality clinical education to the next generation of healthcare professionals, and free or low-cost care to staff, students and the community. Services are available in exercise, nutrition and dietetics, optometry, podiatry, psychology and counselling, wound healing and chronic disease support. The Creative Industries Precinct, Australia s first site dedicated to creative experimentation and commercial development in the creative industries, is also located at the Kelvin Grove campus. A fitness club and aquatic centre with gymnasium, 25-metre pool and indoor sports stadium, as well as tennis courts and sports fields, are located on campus or in the villiage precinct. QUT Art Museum and the William Robinson Gallery in historic Old Government House offer a program of changing exhibitions. This inner-city campus is within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, theatres and galleries. 2

9 Discover Brisbane and Australia QUT is located in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. Brisbane is renowned for its relaxed, outdoor lifestyle and offers a wide range of activities including sports, arts and entertainment, shopping, dining and great nightlife. With a population of approximately 2.12 million people and with 25 per cent of Brisbane residents born overseas, it s clear why Brisbane is regarded as Australia s new world city*. A gateway to Queensland Queensland is a state of many contrasts from tropical coasts and green rainforests to desert and sand country. It is home to many tourist destinations including the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns, the Gold Coast, the Whitsundays and the Sunshine Coast. All of these amazing locations are easily accessible from Brisbane. Sydney and Melbourne are one hour and two hours away respectively by air. Work while studying in Australia You can work while studying in Australia. The current student visa entitles students to limited working hours a week during semester and full time during vacations. It is best to budget so you don t rely on part-time work to cover your expenses while studying. 10 Accommodation in Brisbane There are many accommodation options in Brisbane, and we can help find one that suits you. Our accommodation service can help you find somewhere to live when you arrive in Brisbane. We can assist with information and advice on: living in Brisbane (suburbs, transport, facilities) and setting up a home (furniture, appliances, internet) searching for temporary and permanent accommodation dealing with real estate agents and landlords any tenancy related questions or issues that may arise. You will typically need approximately $ a year (not including your tuition fees) to pay for accommodation, food, study materials, transport, entertainment and personal expenses. All prices are to be used as a guide only and are accurate as at June Brisbane offers a wide range of accommodation options, including: homestay with an Australian family shared living independent living limited on-campus accommodation. 11 Research with impact QUT researchers are working on some of the biggest challenges and opportunities facing Australia and the global community, and their research is recognised as world standard. If you have a passion for discovery, a QUT research degree can launch you into many exciting career options. Achieving at a world-class standard Research at QUT is world class. More than 75 per cent of QUT s current research areas were rated at world standard or above in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia assessment. QUT also has a track record of attracting major international grants including funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the US-based Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International. Real-world research QUT s research covers a diverse range of areas, with our internationally renowned researchers providing practical solutions to address issues and concerns facing industry, the professions and the global community. For example: QUT is working to develop cost effective, innovative wound care techniques and products to treat wounds such as diabetic ulcers and burns. These treatments may also aid victims of earthquakes and tsunamis, where wounds and wound infection contribute to the death toll avionics engineers are developing the technology to enable remotely piloted aircraft to become airborne. The aircraft may be used to scout bushfire-prone country and relay back images to fire management authorities, or provide information in search and rescue missions over land or sea. A high level of support As a QUT research student, you can benefit from a comprehensive program of face-to-face and online training and development opportunities as well as specialist training and administrative support through our dedicated Research Students Centre. We recognise the importance of the student-supervisor relationship and our research staff are trained and accredited in the supervision of research students. We have Research Students Centres located at Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove libraries, and individual consultation with liaison librarians are available. You will have opportunities to receive international exposure for research findings through the QUT eprints repository of published research outputs and PhD and masters by research theses, and we provide international exchange opportunities and a scheme to provide financial support for study-related travel, including attending conferences and accessing specialised equipment or resources. Institute for Future Environments The five star green star Science and Engineering Centre is home to QUT s new Institute for Future Environments (IFE). Hundreds of QUT academics and students from computing, mathematics, environmental and geosciences, robotics, engineering, and other fields come together to tackle the grand challenges facing humanity from feeding the world s booming population to managing scarce natural resources and reducing our carbon footprint. These researchers study how our natural, built and virtual environments interact, change and converge, to find ways to make them more sustainable, secure and resilient. Research developed here focuses on practical applications and the delivery of viable outcomes to make a difference in the real world. 6

12 Scholarships Faculty scholarships Our faculties offer a range of different scholarships including merit scholarships for high-achieving diploma graduates to complete a full degree at QUT. If you re interested in studying business, creative industries, engineering, information technology, mathematics or science, you could receive: a tuition fee sponsorship of 25 per cent of your first semester fees, based on your entry score an ongoing tuition fee sponsorship of 25 per cent per semester, based on your GPA maintenance score. These scholarships assist individuals in developing the skills needed to contribute to development outcomes in their home country. Research scholarships If you are interested in research study, you could be considered for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS), which covers your tuition fees and healthcover costs for you and your dependants. Home scholarships Many countries offer scholarships to their citizens to enable them to study overseas. Some of the programs which QUT participates in are: China Scholarship Council Scholarship Becas Chile Scholarship Malaysian Australian Alumni Council (MAAC) Scholarship Mary N Onsarigo Kenya PhD candidate I m currently doing my PhD in plant biotechnology, specifically looking at banana cultivars that are resistant to viruses. Agricultural research provides a way to improve food security and increase food production back home in Kenya. The Australia Awards Scholarship has given me the opportunity to study an area I m passionate about, and QUT s quality teaching and real world approach has prepared me to better contribute to my country s future. Some QUT Guild clubs and societies also hold meet the professional evenings and career seminars and invite guest speakers to help you on your chosen career path. There are more than 80 clubs including sporting, international, political, religious, faculty, recreational and special interest clubs. Keep fit QUT Sport provides premier and social competitions as well as training and organisation for Australian University Games. 15 Study abroad and exchange Set yourself apart with global experience and make new friends from around the world as a Study Abroad or exchange student at QUT. You can also go on exchange as part of your degree. If you study at one of QUT s partner institutions you may be eligible to come to Brisbane to study for one or two semesters on an exchange program. Students from other universities are welcome to study at QUT in our Study Abroad program. We have a dedicated Study Abroad and Exchange team that can help design a program to suit your interests and meet the requirements of your home university. You can select units from a wide range of QUT study areas including business, information technology, engineering, psychology, and performing arts. There may also be an opportunity to include research in your Study Abroad or exchange program. Facilities and technology Libraries We have libraries at both of our campuses. Each library has space designated for individual or group study. Copying and printing services are also available. All libraries have wireless laptop access. Study spaces QUT has many different study spaces on both campuses: student lounges with big-screen computers meeting rooms with couches outdoor areas with tables. Most areas are freely available or can be reserved in advance. Student centres Student centres are located on both campuses and can help with: timetables ID cards fee payments enrolment assistance other administrative services. The centres have computing facilities to check timetables and personal details, and a range of university guides to help you settle in to life at QUT. Health services Health and medical services are available on the Kelvin Grove and Gardens Point campuses. There are also human movement and exercise clinics, as well as nutrition, dietetics and wound healing clinics. 16 Real support At QUT we provide services that will support you in every aspect of your life as a university student. Pre-departure briefings QUT holds pre-departure briefings in many cities. These are a great opportunity for you and your parents to meet a current QUT student from your home country and learn more about living in Brisbane and studying at QUT. Free airport reception service We offer a free airport reception service for new students, making it easy to get from the airport to your accommodation. Help with your studies QUT language and learning advisers can help you to improve your English and develop your study skills, including: assignment help study tips learning skills language development workshops writing advice. You can set up an individual appointment with an adviser, or attend one of the regular, free workshops on topics including academic writing, communication skills and time management. Counselling services A free, professional counselling service is available to help you deal with personal issues such as stress, relationships and financial matters. Counsellors also provide advice and information about courses, careers and university procedures. You can talk to a counsellor in person, on the phone or by . All sessions are private and confidential. Religious facilities and support We provide chaplaincy services at both of our campuses. The chaplains are available on both campuses to help people of all faiths with personal needs, pastoral care and the services of the church. All religious groups are welcome to use the chaplaincy meeting room for quiet prayer or meetings. Muslim prayer rooms are located at both campuses and Jummaa, or community prayers, are held each Friday at Kelvin Grove. Contacts for Bahai, Buddhist, Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Latter Day Saints and Muslim groups on campus are also available from the chaplaincy centre. Security QUT and Brisbane are very safe environments. Security guards monitor both campuses 24/7, can escort you between buildings, and can come to your assistance at a phone call s notice. Our free intercampus bus runs on a regular schedule between both campuses, and there are emergency call points and closed circuit television (CCTV) for your safety. 17 QUT International College QUT International College (QUTIC) is an integral part of QUT and offers English language and academic pathway programs to assist international students to meet the entry requirements for QUT degree programs. Libia Esperanza Herrera Colombia Postgraduate Business Pathway plus Master of Business I m studying a Master of Business (International Business), because I want to increase my opportunities and competitiveness in the business world. To do this, I undertook two subjects at QUT International College because I needed to improve my English skills. The best things for me about studying at QUTIC were the facilities and the teachers. Their support helped me accomplish my goals. 12
