7 Photo: Effy Alexakis Ulrike Wackernagel Germany Master of International Relations with Master of International Business I knew I wanted to study outside of Germany and in an English speaking country. I chose Macquarie University because of their double degree programs. That sold it for me! The Master of International Business pleases my parents and the Master of International Relations sounded really interesting. Even though Macquarie s campus is big, the postgraduate classes are small. The professors learn your name and there is a lot of interaction between professors and students. The campus is also very international. I don t have to worry about being the odd one out because Macquarie is a community of international students. It makes it very easy to meet others and have a sense of belonging. Graduate profile Gabriel Torres Brown, Master of International Relations Chief of Communications, Pfizer Colombia La Sabana University, my home university in Colombia, has a Dual Degree Program with Macquarie and I always wanted to study International Relations. To do so in an international country like Australia made the offer look as if it were meant to be - and it was. I am certain that my Macquarie degree opened every professional door and opportunity that I ve had so far. In a country such as mine the international aspect is very valuable. Who you will learn from Professor Martina Möllering Head, Department of International Studies Professor Möllering has received a national citation for her innovative approaches to technologyenhanced language learning. Her research areas include corpus-based approaches to language teaching and computer-mediated communication in second language acquisition. Our department likes to think of language as a window into another culture - not just a skill. 7
8 Photo: Kate Boyd About Macquarie University At Macquarie, you will join a welcoming community of 35,000 students with more than 12,000 international students from over 110 countries. Ranked within the top ten universities in Australia (Shanghai Jiaotong University Rankings, 2011), Macquarie University is recognised for its innovative curriculum, high-quality teaching, world-leading research and green campus environment. Campus location and facilities Macquarie University s North Ryde campus is uniquely located in parklands only 30 minutes from Sydney s central business district. On campus you will find modern facilities, including a state-of-the-art Sport and Aquatic Centre, private teaching hospital, museums and hotels. In 2011 we opened our new multi-million dollar library a learning space like no other in Australia, featuring study lounges, a robotic document retrieval system and a cafe. The Macquarie Centre shopping complex is on our doorstep and we have our own train station on campus, providing a direct rail link to the city centre. Quality student accommodation is available both on and off-campus. Enhance your degree Macquarie University offers a range of leadership and career building programs to help students get an edge in the global job market. The Global Leadership Program (GLP) allows students to develop leadership and intercultural skills through studying, volunteering and participating in experiences both in Australia and overseas. The Graduate Development Program (GDP) offers a personalised approach to building independent career skills, combining an individual development plan with one-on-one consultations, weekly workshops and industry speaker events. Macquarie also offers an internship program and one of the most extensive international exchange programs of any Australian university.
