6 Honorary Speakers Abel Maldonado Lieutenant Governor, California Abel Maldonado is the oldest son of immigrant field workers. Like many immigrants, his father came to this country with little more than the shirt on his back. Abel was elected to the City Council at the age of 26. Two years later, he was elected Mayor. After guiding the city out of a financial crisis, Abel took his common-sense style of leadership to Sacramento when he was elected to the State Legislature. In the legislature, Abel proved himself an effective voice for California taxpayers cutting government waste and fighting to reform a state budget process that had repeatedly failed the state. Eloy Ortiz Oakley Long Beach City College Eloy Ortiz Oakley is a true community college success story. After graduating from high school and four years in the U.S. Army, the Southern California native found focus at a community college. President Oakley went on to receive his B.A. in Environmental Analysis and Design and his MBA in Business Administration from the University of California, Irvine after transferring from Golden West College. Chip Conley Joie de Vivre Hospitality Chip Conley is founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre (JdV), California s largest independent hotel company and what USA Today called the most delightfully schizophrenic collection of hotels in America. Today JdV consists of over 40 unique and award-winning hotels, restaurants and spas, 3,000 employees, and annual revenues of $250 million. A best-selling author, Chip shares his unique prescription for success in his most recent book, PEAK: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow (Jossey-Bass, 2007). 6
7 Honorary Speakers Bret O Connor Small Business Development Center Bret started his first small business at the age of 10, painting house numbers on neighborhood curbs for $5 each. Since that time, he has played key roles in developing small businesses in a wide range of industries, from web technology to management consulting. Bret is honored to be serving the local small business community and fellow entrepreneurs in his newest role as the Director of the Long Beach Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Doug Failing Metropolitan Transportation Authority Mr. Failing is currently serving as the Executive Director of the Highway Program and the Interim Chief Planning Officer for Los Angeles County Metro where he is responsible for Delivery of the nearly $8 billion Measure R Highway Program and delivery of the Environmental Clearances for the nearly $16 billion Measure R Transit Program. In 2006, Failing was chosen by the Los Angeles Times West Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in Southern California. John Ballotti Mattel John Ballotti has worked for Mattel for 27 years and is currently a Senior Director in the Global Procurement department. Over his career at Mattel, John has worked in both the direct and indirect areas of procurement. In support of Mattel s manufacturing operations John has traveled to 22 countries sourcing raw material, commodities, components, assemblies, and finished product. In the area of indirect, John has sourced a variety of goods and services in support of the corporate officers in the areas of Human Resources, Information Technology, Logistics, Facilities, Product Integrity and Design and Development. 7
8 Honorary Speakers Joe Alderete Southern California Edison Joseph F. Alderete has been the Manager of the Supplier Diversity Program for Southern California Edison for over 12 years. In this position, he oversees the Company s Women and Minority Business Program. He insures compliance with all CPUC rules and regulations, and all public law relating to women and minority procurements. Rose Cote Los Angeles World Airports The Business and Job Resources Center, Los Angeles World Airports, provides assistance to the business community by collaborating and participating with business organizations to increase awareness of procurement opportunities at Los Angeles World Airports. Rose is an active member of the Construction Management Association of America, Southern California Chapter and the Airport Minority Advisory Council. Kelly Flint Constant Contact Kelly is Constant Contact s local small business expert in the Greater Los Angeles area. A knowledgeable marketing expert, Kelly has helped thousands of small businesses, associations, and nonprofits develop and implement effective marketing and online survey strategies. A popular speaker and educator, Kelly gives small businesses and nonprofits the tools, techniques, and strategies they need to grow and expand their business and to maximize the power of relationship marketing. 8
9 Honorary Speakers Danetta Jackson California Department of General Services Danetta Jackson is the Manager of the California Department of General Services Communication and Outreach Branch for the Procurement Division. She also serves as the Department s Small Business and Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise (DVBE) Advocate. In these capacities, Danetta and her staff work to make certain that Small and DVBE businesses get access to their share of state awarded contracts. Gilbert Ivey Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Gilbert F. Ivey is the Chief Administrative Officer of The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, having served as interim Chief Executive Officer during the agency s five-month search for a permanent replacement in Ivey has contributed to the community by serving in leadership positions on numerous boards and commissions. He currently serves on the executive boards of the Los Angeles Central City Association, the Valley Industry and Commerce Association, and the American Association of Blacks in Energy. Blake E. Christian Carlin & Van Trigt LLP Blake Christian is a CPA, specializing in corporate and business consulting and tax planning. Blake also provides services to high-net-worth individual taxpayers. Blake has over 29 years experience. He received a master s degree in taxation from the University of Southern California and completed a bachelor s degree in business administration from California State University Long Beach. 9
10 Honorary Speakers Fred Lona Hilton Worldwide As Senior Director - Supplier Diversity for Hilton Worldwide and based in Beverly Hills, California, Fred Lona directs the development, administration and execution of the Hilton Supplier Diversity Program. While ensuring compliance with the corporate-wide diversity strategy, he also seeks to incorporate innovative best practice programs in supplier diversity. Community Relations Manager Coors Brewing Company Developed and enhanced relationships among the top ethnic groups, nonprofits, community leaders and public officials in California and the Pacific Northwest. Focused primarily on the Latino community by promoting Coors products and programs to this group. 11 Honorary Speakers Angel CArrera California Department of General Services Angel Carrera was appointed as Business Development Program Manager on November 28, As the Business Development Program Manger he is the Department s key advisor and small business liaison to underrepresented, emerging and other small business communities regarding certification, reciprocity programs, contracting opportunities and infrastructure bonds (AB 761). Before his current position here at DGS, Angel was the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Manager at the Department of Transportation. Jay Torres Roger Stone Insurance Agency Mr. Torres began his career in 1982 working for one of the largest insurance companies in the United States with over $100 Billion in assets. His insurance and financial services background includes over 15 years of service in the Sales and Marketing areas with major healthcare insurance companies. These companies include Metropolitan Life, The Equitable Life Assurance Society, Cigna, Blue Cross of California and Blue Shield of California. For over 10 years, Mr. Torres owned and operated a full-service insurance and financial services agency in Newport Beach, California. Sherman Gay Metropolitan Transportation Authority Sherman Gay is Metro s Small Business Outreach Officer and has worked for metro for (12) twelve years and has over twenty (20) years experience assisting small businesses. Mr. Gay is responsible for providing assistance and guidance to small businesses interested in pursuing contracting opportunities at Metro. He conducts Metro s Small Business Orientation Workshop held each month for small business firms seeking to develop, expand and do business with Metro and other agencies. 11
12 Honorary Speakers David Chase Small Business Majority David Chase is the California Outreach Manager for Small Business Majority, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded and run by small business owners, that brings the voices of America s 28 million small businesses to the public policy table. The organization has been focused most recently on solving the single biggest problem facing small businesses today: the skyrocketing cost of healthcare. Lou Anne Bynum Long Beach City College As Vice President - Assistant Superintendent of Economic and Resource Development at the Long Beach Community College District, Ms. Bynum has administered over $80 million in grants and contracts and oversees workforce development; community education; corporate education and training; federal and state workforce grants; economic development grants and contracts; and special resource development projects on behalf of the District. Ms. Bynum earned a master s degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and a bachelor s degree from CSU Long Beach. Cesar Arellanes Long Beach International Trade Office Cesar Arellanes has over 10 years of international business experience: ranging from his time at the US Department of Commerce to founding and operating his own real estate development company. Cesar Arellanes is currently the appointed Program Manager for the Center for the International Trade Development (CITD). As the CITD Manager, Mr. Arellanes provides technical assistance and training in international trade to small and medium sized companies. 12
