3 Executive summary It is very important within the supply chain to receive on-time information about transport units such as wagons or trains. Moreover a customer shall need further commercial and technical data like railway-bill or distance summary. This document concerns with some possible Tracking & Tracing systems with all its advantages and weaknesses. Furthermore it demonstrates a practical experience of a solar supplied GPS system for GYSEV group. For the moment there exist only few automated information management systems within Europe in the railway sector for final customer s use. Sweden has dedicated transport information system introduced for national freight transports, advising the final consumer trains, routes, departure and arrival times, as well updates in case of delays. Such initiative is being tested under the umbrella of X-Rail 1 project in participation of 7 railways in Europe, but this system is for the moment in test phase. With the X-Rail project the main problem on the whole transport route, the information management is only partially solved. It s important for transport operators in the supply chain to receive and send any kind of proper information about the position, speed, stops, etc. of the commodity. Furthermore it s necessary to receive commercial data about transport, which means the railway bill (or consignment note) for rail transport. Another important factor is the security of transports in active or passive form. The active form is the guide of freight trains with personal, which is being used in some regions of Europe but is outdated and human cost intensive. Passive security is as an example a gps device with door alarm equipped that informs upon door opening. As possible development of this system could be a fully integrated human support of gps door open alerts in different stations. This could be a satisfied solution for customers to make railway transport transparent and safe and could contribute as one factor of the many existing to a modal split shift from road to rail. The reader of this work document receives theoretical and practical solutions for information systems

4 1 Introduction The objective of this document is to demonstrate theoretical and practical solutions in information systems for supply chain operators. It s important for a transport operator in the supply chain to receive and send any kind of proper information about the position, speed, stops, etc. of the commodity. Furthermore it s necessary to receive commercial data about transport, which means the railway bill (or consignment note) for rail transport. The theoretical part of this work summarize the different tracking and tracing possibilities existing on the market while the practical part demonstrates one chosen system extended with the commercial information provided by GYSEV CARGO to its customers. As an appendix for this project chapter an IT Handbook has been written to explain the practical processes. This practical gps device will be used for test in case of interest in the working packages demonstration cases in freight for SETA corridor as well for freight demonstration trains. 2 Existing information systems on the market Chapter 2 delivers possible information system models tested or introduced in the market and are known by GYSEV. The first one is a national system within Hungary, the second one is a smart solution for suitable for dedicated chosen shuttle transports system providing international positioning and additional data. The third solution is a global possibility for technical and commercial data transfer between railways and provided pre-active management on technical aspects of wagons (e.g. service intervals). 2.1 Locomotive on board information system 2 In Hungary the company Prolan Zrt. established a locomotive on board information system. Beside the power supply control (FET) they created the functionality of central traffic control and supervisory systems (KÖFE, KÖFI), too. All these functions are permanently used for both passenger and freight transport. The Electronic Control Desk System (ELPULT) was applied first, which replaces the traditional electromechanical control desks. ELPULT allows the remote control of railway stations and remote control of entire lines or railway regions. The system s security certification was made according to the latest valid EU standards. Prolan is the first Hungarian company which can deliver a secure railway control system in compliance with CENELEC MSZ-EN 50126, 50128, standards. 2 More information: 4

5 The Alcatel User Interface (AKF) was ordered by Alcatel Austria AG now known as Thales RSS GmbH. AKF was developed for connecting man and machine in Elektra I. and II., electrical interlocking systems. This product was applied at Vecsés, Üllő, Monor and Komárom railway stations, between Sopron and Szombathely, and at 13 stations from Boba to the Slovenian border. Between 2007 and 2009 Prolan created the remote control system in Szeged region for MÁV, by October 2011 they handed over the railway remote control system in South Balaton region. Thanks to the project the traffic of the railway line can be followed on a modern monitor wall instead of the old fashioned projectors from the control centre in Fonyód, so the traffic of the line can be overviewed easily and quickly with one look. In the meanwhile they worked on the reconstruction of the GYSEV Sopron-Szentgotthárd line. Beside the delivery of the electronic control desks, they also created the power supply control (FET) and control system of the traction substation and input section break in Körmend. The Rolling Stock Department installed Locomotive On-board Computers (LOC) on 1500 diesel and electric traction vehicles and control cars of MÁV group. LOC is a complex onboard computer equipped with GPS and GSM modem. It is designed for the automatic control of the railway traffic. In addition to the support of the traffic control it is also opens the way for further functional, passenger-friendly developments such as internet based or audio passenger information system. MFB The Locomotive On-board Computer, which has been developed under the guidance of the professionals of MÁV (the Hungarian State Railways) Co. Traction Department, is part of MÁV s future complex Traction Supervisory System (TSS). The device contains integrated GSM and GPS services. The on-board computer continuously provides data to the dispatching centre regarding current position, operation status and mechanical parameters of the traction vehicle. The LOC is a modular system built in 19-inches rack modules communicating through CAN. Every module has its own processor unit including power supply unit. 5

Figure: MFB on board device of Prolan ELPULT D55 In central traffic control systems provided by Prolan the relay interlocking system operating at train stations can be controlled by traditional electro-mechanical mimic control panels with their pushbuttons, or by the electronic control board (ELPULTD55). The remotely controllable ELPULTD55 device is capable of replacing the traditional electro-mechanical mimic control panel of relay interlocking systems. Functions of the ELPULT D55 device: - Safety equipment feedback on an electronic interface - Handling of operative and special orders - Logging of traffic and safety equipment events - Authorization management - Archiving, archive recovery - Supervision of the station s fire and safety alarm system 6

8 2.2 GPS device on wagon/container In Europe exist several number of GPS service providers for railway that offer wide range of functions with a device called tracker, pointer, etc. for customers. These trackers work with GPS-GSM-R system, where GPS fulfils the function of positioning while GSM-R is responsible for data transfer to service providers servers. GSM-R works only upon connection, which can lead for data delay at country change (roaming) or in poor networked geographical areas (e.g. mountains). Such devices must be mounted on a wagon or a container. They work either with built-in long term batteries or with solar system. Value added services of these devices are the geo-fencing that informs upon entering or exiting a pre-defined geographical area, or information about wagon stop points and their length to find out where the bottlenecks are in the supply chain. Furthermore the system can measure transport performance in distance and alarm at each pre-programmed parameter. This function helps the user to be prepared for regular maintenance or revision of the rolling stock. Advantages of the device: easy mount and unmount low system requirements related to on board systems and RFIDs no extra reader, antenna etc. are required cost efficiency multi-purpose for different customers wide geographical scope value added services to main function (e.g. geo-fencing, statistics, etc.) Disadvantages: data transfer only upon GSM-R connection ( damageable (as in many cases visible) higher running costs (roaming) 8

Figure: GPS device and how it works For the SETA project this technology is the most suitable due its simplicity, cost- and function-efficiency (at least in small quantities and for short period) compared to locomotive on board or RFID systems. GYSEV asked the following 3 competitors to offer solutions based on personal pre-study in the international Transport and Logistics Fair in Munich as well on information from partners in freight transportation: Telenor Traxion 3 DOT-Telematik 4 CargoMon Systems 5 Telenor Traxion ist the most known brand in the market with complex solutions fully railway dedicated (maps, extras, etc.) but also the most unflexible regarding tailor made solutions. Their Central-Region s office is located in Poland. CargoMon is an austrian company started activity after parctical research and development with the Technical University in Vienna. 10 The third tenderer DOT Telematik is also located in Austria Leobendorf with a small but flexible team. With the solar technology for GPS device they are the more innovative than the two compatitors using long life time batteries for trackers (up to 5 years). GYSEV set following requriements eqally for each provider: Subject of Inquiry: Tested Tracking & Tracing solution in SETA project Work Package with GPS devices, and all-inclusive IT-support Number of GPS devices: 2 GPS devices for closed wagons (Type Hb, Ha) equipped with door opening alarm sensor + 3 GPS devices for container carrying boogies mounted on railway wagons (screws, magnets, etc.) GPS device requests: - GPS/GSM-R (or similar) system, communication via service provider s homepage or sms or - Roaming for whole Europe (incl. Turkey) - at least 3 month of service time without changing of the batteries (8-12 messages per day about position + alarm at all door opening + closing) - exact positioning of wagons on map (railway map not requested) - alarm at door opening and closing (for Hb and Ha wagon type) for all doors separately - reliable functionality of SIM card/chip at all circumstances (extreme shunting, cold, hot weather, fog, etc.) upon network connection - possibility of programming/parameter setting for all device via service provider s homepage - immediate data transfer in.xml format about position, door opening to GYSEV s homepage directly (one-way communication) - functionality at weather circumstances: between -30 C and + 50 C, at snow, rain, fog, etc. The practical implementation of Tracking & Tracing with GPS device for SETA project is pointed out in the chapter 3 of this document. 10

11 2.3 RFID technology RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is a technology for wireless communication between a reader and a transponder/tag). This data transfer technology is widely used in many industrial branches (e.g. barcodes). RFID can be split into active and passive systems. Active systems have a battery in the tag, passive system have no battery, the use the electromagnetic field of the transceiver. At a simple level, Radio-Frequency Identification systems consist of three components: An RFID tag a transponder that has been programmed with information. An RFID reader a transceiver, with a decoder to interpret the data. A scanning antenna Transmission of data: RFID tags contain an integrated circuit and scanning antennas, putting out radio frequency radiation signals in a relatively short range. The radio frequency radiation is used to transmit data to the RFID reader, which converts the radio waves into a more usable form of data. This data collected from the RFID tags is then stored in the database to be analyzed and interpreted within the host computer system. 4. 12 Some Advantages of RFID: RFID tags do not need batteries to operate (passive RFID tags); therefore may be used for very long periods of time. Scanning antennas can be permanently affixed to a surface; handheld antennas are also available No physical contact necessary between tag and reader Identifying of several tags at the same time Tags have rewritable memory for multi-use purpose Functionality under extreme circumstances (e.g. at all weather conditions) Some Disadvantages of RFID: High implementation costs (tags, antennas, readers) Works only where system is fully established (reader and antenna related) RFID case studies Sweden Early in 2011 goods wagons marked with RFID tags were started to roll in a full-scale test of between some of the Volvo s facilities in Sweden and Belgium. This was a major step toward creating a common standard for identifying and tracking rolling stock throughout Europe. It is the Sweedish Transport Administration that has been testing RFID solutions. It all started with a system using active tags, but they changed to the new generation of passive tags that can be read even when the trains are running at a high speed. The system has such advantages that at the last Innotrans exhibition in Berlin Sweden managed to close about 70 contracts with several companies from different countries. Green Cargo the national Swedish railway undertaking has invested its own money with the trial for Volvo Logistics. They also tried to put GPS on wagon but in a bigger quantity they got more expensive than the RFID system. RFID will also reduce administration and paper handling including everything from reporting to billing. The system enables for railways to write both technical and commercial specifications for a wagon which makes the handover procedure between railways in Europe after establishing this system very easy. From technical point of view goods wagons generate considerable wear and tear of the rails, especially if they have any damage. Today it s difficult getting an overview of which and where wagons have problems. RFID can prompt identify those wagons for a quicker action. RFID provides statistics as well for a preventive maintenance. 12

13 3 Practical tracking and tracing system for partners 3.1 Introduction As described in chapter 2.2, GYSEV received offers for leasing of devices and IT services, such as positioning, door open alerts, geofancing, etc. from 3 companies. As offering the best flexible solution at cheapest possible price, GYSEV agreed with DOT-Telematik about service. DOT Telematik had to mount the devices on 5 wagons of GYSEV CARGO and had to prepare the IT data transfer between the two companies. GYSEV provided its own Homepage for the final customer via GYSEV CARGO. Question may arise why GYSEV and GYSEV CARGO are necessary in this service when DOT could offer these services directly to the customers as well? Simply answered the customer is also interested about commercial information about their transport which is clearly provided by GYSEV developed IT-system for GYSEV CARGO. At the end of the SETA project period GYSEV unmounts the devices and posts back to DOT-Telematik 3.2 Equipping of wagons Following 5 Wagons were equipped with GPS on 17 th of December, 2013: Wagon number: Device Nr.: / / / / /3 Wagons and were also equipped with automatic wired door open alarm system to give the customer information if wagon door is opened either for unloading or for theft. This system can t avoid theft but gives a feedback where damages can occur to make an action plan for analysing the threatened areas and to make a preventive action plan. For the covered wagons the provider needed a dry and safe maintenance workshop because of the winter season. It was offered him in Sopron by GYSEV. Mounting time per wagon was about 2 hours including wiring for door sensors. The equipping of flat wagons with GPS was ready within 10 minutes. 13

15 3.3 GPS testing period As of 1 st of January, 2014 devices were activated and data transfer between DOT-Telematik and GYSEV was prepared. The five wagons run mainly in the neighbouring countries and to the Balkan as follows: - Ljubljana Slovenia - Kapfenberg Austria - Linz Austria - Záhony Hungary - Anchialos Makedonias, Sindos Greece - Cerkezkoey, Halkali Turkey GYSEV Homepage users manual The task of the programme is to trace the way of the individual wagon/s and to signal any possible unauthorized door openings underway. 1. 19 A yellow circle on the screen marks a door opening: ID of the bill of freight image, by clicking on it, you will see the bill of freight. Once you have finished the search, click on Exit within the File menu in order to exit the programme. Possible errors: 19

20 3.5 Practical experiences The functionality of the device is perfect. It sends exact and correct data about the position of each wagon every 3 hours while collecting gps coordinates every hour. Position accuracy is approx. 3 meters. Functionality under different weather circumstances was faultless. The solar power supply had no blackout periods during the tests and worked properly. Door opening alerts function as well and immediately at open progress sending text message to dedicated mobile phones. There were no improper alerts. Homepage of GYSEV shows up correct data about position, door openings and different running periods. Commercial data behind positioning is exact, which is very important for service provider to avoid legal consequences of sending the wrong commercial information. Recommendations for developing the homepage, as they couldn t be programmed during SETA period due to different factors would be exact separated run statistics for each wagon, as well information about wagon stops and stop times. Furthermore mileage statistics were useful as well. Without any doubt a GPS based system is of core advantage for each partners within the supply chain. With the help of this device a partner received automatic information about the commodity with added value services. While work package 4.2 of SETA is concerned with infrastructural database and information system for infrastructure managers (IM), WP tracking and tracing deals with railway undertakings (RU) using the infrastructure. experiences will surely deliver solution for freight demonstration train (WP 6.2.4) to increase the number of added value services within the supply-chain. 20
