U-M s student radio station, WCBN, also carries the games on FM 88.3 and wcbn.org. NORTHEASTERN, GAME 1 RECAP In a battle of special teams, the Wolverines beat the Huskies 4-3 in overtime. U-M was three for seven on the power play, while NU converted three for nine. Kevin Porter scored two times, including the game-winner at 1:01 of overtime on a redirection in the slot. T.J. Hensick had two assists and David Rohlfs had a goal and an assist. Mike Morris spearheaded the Huskies offense, with power-play goals DROP THE PUCK less than two minutes apart in the second period to give NU a 3-2 lead. Chad Kolarik provided the tying goal for the Wolverines late in the second period. NORTHEASTERN, GAME 2 RECAP Michigan outshot the Huskies by a margin, but still fell by a 3-2 count. The Wolverines were zero for twelve on the power play. Jack Johnson scored the lone goal of the first period. NU answered with goals just over two minutes apart in the middle stanza to take the lead. The Huskies extended their lead to 3-2 halfway through the third period. Kevin Porter scored with 3:24 remaining but U-M could not get the tying goal. MAIZE OUT SATURDAY Saturday s game (Nov. 4) has been designated as a Maize Out for the Wolverine faithful. All fans are encouraged to dress in maize clothing. MICHIGAN I STATE T U-M SPORTS WEEKLY The University of Michigan Athletic Department, Host Communications and 1270 XYT The Sports Station have teamed to provide Wolverine fans with a weekly one-hour radio show, Michigan Sports Weekly. The weekly radio program during the hockey season will feature WXYT s Doug Karsch and Art Regner, in addition to Jim Brandstatter. The show will air weekly on 1270 XYT The Sports Station and throughout the region on Michigan Radio Network affiliates. Check your local affiliate for the broadcast day and time. The Michigan Sports Weekly Show will air 40 times throughout the academic year and provide coverage of all 25 Wolverine varsity sports. USA Today Preseason Oct Oct Oct Oct ICE TIME Defenseman Jack Johnson led the team in playing time on Oct. 27 against Northeasern with 30:06. The next night, Matt Hunwick led the team in time on ice (28:14) because Johnson was ejected midway through the game. Forward T.J. Hensick led the forwards in ice time in each game against the Huskies. He had 21:27 on Oct. 27 and 25:46 on Oct. 28. HIGH PRODUCTIVITY Kevin Porter set season highs for goals (2) and points (3) while notching the overtime, game-winning goal in a 4-3 triumph against Northeastern on Oct. 27. His first goal that night was his 30th goal as a Wolverine and the game-winner in overtime propelled him to the 70-point plateau for his career. He also recorded his 20th career multi-point game and fifth career multi-goal game. KOLARIK NETS ANOTHER Chad Kolarik scored his eighth goal of the season on Oct. 27 against NU. His eight markers lead the team while his 11 total points are tied for the team lead with T.J. Hensick ( ). Kolarik has two hat tricks this year and has goals in four out of six games. His 1.33 goals per game average leads the nation. ROHLFS ROLLS ON David Rohlfs has a goal in four of U-M s six games this season after his tally on Oct. 27 against NU. Rohlfs has already amassed a line this year while skating alongside T.J. Hensick and Kevin Porter. Rohlfs career-best goal and point outputs came in his freshman season of when he had seven goals and 13 points. Rohlfs set his single-season assist mark with 10 helpers in PEOPLE WATCHING Jack Johnson extended his point streak to three games with an assist on Oct. 27 and a goal on Oct. 28 versus Northeastern. He has a line. Due to a one-game suspension he must serve during U-M s game at Michigan State on Nov. 3, Johnson will have to wait until Nov. 4 to try to push his streak to four games when U-M hosts the Spartans on Nov. 4. HENSICK APPROACHING TOP 10 ASSISTS T.J. Hensick s four-assist weekend gave him 109 career assists and moved him into a tie for 12th place on Michigan s all-time forwards assist list. He is tied with Kevin Hilton ( ) and Gordon Wilkie ( ). Hensick needs one more assist to tie for 11th place and two more feeds to crack the top 10. HUNWICK CLIMBS D-MAN ASSIST LIST With two assists over the weekend, Matt Hunwick earned his 54th and 55th career assists to tie Bubba Berenzweig ( ) and Connie Hill ( ) for 20th place on U-M s all-time defensemen assist list. His next assist will put him in a tie for 19th on the chart. POWER PLAY WOES Michigan has allowed a power-play goal against in all six games this season. U-M s penalty-killing percentage is.809 (38 for 47). In comparison, the Wolverines are converting at a.178 clip (8 for 45) and have been held scoreless with the man-advantage in two of six games. JEKYLL AND HYDE After three weeks, Michigan is in the first game of a weekend series. Michigan is averaging 6.0 goals per game while allowing 2.3. In game twos, the Wolverines are 1-2-0, averaging 3.3 goals per game and giving up 4.0. Prior to Porter, the last time a Michigan player scored an overtime goal came at Northern Michigan on Nov. 10, Brandon Naurato knocked in that gamewinner 35 games earlier. RUNNING ITEMS HOMEBODIES The Wolverines play nine of their first 10 games of the season at Yost Ice Arena, including the opening half dozen contests. Even after that stretch, Michigan will only leave its home state for three games before the New Year, the first two not occurring until the College Hockey Showcase in Wisconsin and Minnesota at Thanksgiving, 13 games into the season. U- M also ventures to Notre Dame in December. BERENSON EARNS LESTER PATRICK AWARD Head coach Red Berenson was named one of five honorees who will be receiving the Lester Patrick Award, the National Hockey League announced on October 3. Berenson, along with hockey greats Steve Yzerman, Reed Larson, Glen Sonmor and Marcel Dionne, will be recognized Monday, Nov. 6, at a luncheon at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The Patrick Award is given for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. BERENSON APPROACHING 600 WINS Head coach Red Berenson is 11 wins away from reaching the 600-win plateau for his career. He will be the eighth coach in NCAA hockey history to reach the milestone. Berenson s 589 wins put him in eighth place on the NCAA hockey all-time wins list. He is 66 wins away from tying Jeff Sauer (655, Colorado College, Wisconsin) for seventh place. Berenson has a career record of , good for a.666 winning percentage.

MICHIGAN STATE MICHIGAN TEAM LEADERS NATIONAL STATISTIC RANKINGS 1-2 COMBINATION The Wolverines were picked to finish atop the CCHA by the media while being slotted second behind the Michigan State Spartans in the coaches poll at CCHA Media Day on Sept. 27. U-M earned 26 of the 77 first-place votes to edge out the Spartans for the top seed in the media poll. In the coaches poll, Michigan received one top vote. Michigan State received seven first-place votes from coaches and collected 38 of the 77 first-place votes in the media poll. After MSU and U-M, the other consensus top five teams in both polls were Miami (3) and Nebraska-Omaha (5). Northern Michigan was tapped as the fourth-place team in the media poll, while Ohio State filled the spot in the coaches poll. Michigan has been a favorite in at least one of the CCHA preseason polls in four of the past five seasons. LEADER AND BEST Heading into the season, senior forward T.J. Hensick was the active career leader in two of the three major offensive statistics. Hensick had 153 career points, putting him eight points ahead of Nebraska- Omaha s Scott Parse (145). With 101 career assists, Hensick was 11 feeds in front of Parse s total (90). Hensick s 52 career goals had him in second place to Parse s 55 career tallies. Hunwick, who was an alternate captain last season, replaces graduated captain Andrew Ebbett. In , senior forward T.J. Hensick and senior defenseman Jason Dest will support Hunwick as alternate captains. Hensick was also an alternate a season ago. Hunwick, a Sterling Heights, Mich., native, is just the second U-M captain to hail from the state of Michigan in the last 16 seasons. Andy Burnes (Battle Creek) was the captain in Prior to Burnes, Don Stone (Utica) was a co-captain with David Harlock in GOING THE DISTANCE Senior defenseman Jason Dest entered the season with the second-longest active games-played streak in the nation. He is currently at 131 games. North Dakota s Chris Porter has never missed a game in his career, skating in 140 consecutive contests. Dest sat out the first game of his freshman season against Mercyhurst on Oct. 4, 2003, at Yost Ice Arena. He saw his first action on Oct. 10, 2003, at Miami s Goggin Ice Arena and has not been removed from the lineup since. Dest is tied with Michigan State s Ethan Graham for second place in active career games played. Both players have 131 appearances, but Graham s have not all come consecutively. MICHIGAN STATE HEAD COACH RED BERENSON A 17-year veteran of the NHL, Red Berenson (U-M, 1962) is in his 23rd season at the helm for the Wolverines, where he owns a record. Berenson is currently in 8th place on college hockey s coaching wins list and is one of 14 head coaches in college hockey history to accumulate 500 wins. A former Michigan captain and two-time All-American for U-M from , Berenson has averaged more than 26 wins per season in his collegiate coaching career. He has led Michigan to a pair of NCAA Championships (1996, 1998) and 16 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament, the longest active streak of any school in college hockey. He spent three seasons ( ) as head coach of the NHL s St. Louis Blues before coming back to Michigan, earning NHL Coach of the Year honors in For his outstanding service to hockey in the United States Berenson will be given the NHL s Lester Patrick Award on Nov. 6, He will be one of five recipients. NCAA RULE UPDATES Keeping pace with some of the National Hockey League s rules initiatives, NCAA hockey will feature some rule adjustments in The CCHA will continue to crack down on all obstruction-type penalties as in Officials can now wave off icing if they deem that it s a result of an attainable pass. Also, goalie equipment has shrunk, meaning that each leg pad can be no more than 11 inches across and 38 inches high. The blocker cannot exceed eight inches wide or 15 inches long. From heel to outside edge, the trapper cannot exceed 18 inches. Single-camera video replays will be available at every CCHA arena. Players are allowed to direct pucks into the goal with their skates, unless a distinct kicking motion is used. COACH HEYLIGER PASSES AWAY The Michigan Hockey family lost one of its all time greats on Wednesday, Oct. 4, when former coach and player Vic Heyliger passed away at the age of 94. Heyliger played at Michigan from and returned to coach the Wolverines from 1945 through Over his 13-year coaching career he was responsible for winning six NCAA Championships (1948, 51, 52, 53, 55, 56). FIVE ON ALL-CCHA PRESEASON TEAM Four Michigan skaters were named to the third annual All-CCHA preseason team. Senior forward T.J. Hensick was one of three forwards on the first team, while senior defenseman Matt Hunwick and sophomore defenseman Jack Johnson swept the first-team defensive pairing. Junior forward Kevin Porter earned All- CCHA second team recognition, and Andrew Cogliano received honorable mention. Hensick has finished each of his three previous seasons on an All-CCHA team (first team in and and second team in ). Hunwick is a two-time All- CCHA second team selection ( , ). Johnson was a member of the CCHA-All Rookie team in Neither Porter nor Cogliano have garnered All-CCHA honors in their young careers. THE NEW KIDS Five freshman join the Maize and Blue for the season. The class is made up of two forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender. Up front, Brian Lebler is a 6-2, 210-pound winger from Penticton, B.C. He played for the Penticton Vees in the BCHL last year. Anthony Ciraulo is 5-6, 175 pounds, and is from Clinton Township, Mich. Ciraulo played for the Mahoning Valley Phantoms in the NAHL before coming to U-M. The blue line will be fortified by Chris Summers and Steve Kampfer. Summers (6-2, 185) is from Milan, Mich., and played for the U.S. National Team Development Program for the last two seasons. Kampfer (5-11, 197) played for the Sioux City Musketeers last year and is from Jackson, Mich. Goalie Steve Jakiel checks in at 6-4, 190 pounds. Jakiel, who s from Santa Clarita, Calif., split time with Lincoln and Indianapolis in the USHL a season ago. NCAA TRADITION Michigan made it 16 straight seasons with an NCAA appearance in U-M s streak began in the season, making it the longest active streak in the nation. The Wolverines have reached the Frozen Four on nine occasions during the streak and have gone on to capture two national titles (1996, '98). BEST OF THE BEST Over the last 10 seasons, the Wolverines lead the nation in both wins (285) and winning percentage (.707). Michigan has reached the 30-win mark in four of those seasons ( , , , ).
