BOBCAT BATTLE: The #9/10 St. Cloud State University men s hockey team (4-0-0, NCHC) will travel to Hamden, Conn. this weekend for a pair of games against #13/14 Quinnipiac University (4-0-0, ECAC). The games on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24 will both be played at the TD Bank Sports Center and both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. (CT)...SCSU owns a series lead against Quinnipiac. QUICK HITS: Goalie Charlie Lindgren was named the NCAA #1 Star of the Week and the NCHC Goaltender of the Week after his pair of shutouts vs. Minnesota State. Lindgren is the first goalie in SCSU DI history to chart three consecutive shutouts in three consecutive starts. Judd Peterson leads the Huskies this season with three goals and two of those goals are ENGs. Patrick Russell paces the club with six points (2g/4a). SCSU is a perfect 12-of-12 on the penalty kill this year. SCSU has only allowed two goals this season and leads the nation on defense with 0.50 goals allowed per game. TV TIME: SCSU home games are televised live through the efforts of Husky Productions, SCSU s awarding winning studentrun sports production operation. LAST YEAR: The Huskies ( , NCHC) placed sixth in the NCHC s regular season standings last year and also finished as the runner-up at the 2015 NCAA West Regional and at the 2015 NCHC Frozen Faceoff. Nick Oliver was named as the 2015 NCHC Sportmanship Award winner. POLL POSITION: SCSU was ranked #10 in the USA Hockey national college hockey poll and was ranked 9th in the USCHO.com poll this week...scsu earned a 17th place ranking in the USCHO.com preseason poll and the Huskies were ranked #6 in the NCHC preseason media poll. SCSU ended the season ranked #10/12 in the national polls. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko earned WCHA Coach of the Year notice in 2006 and The Huskies assistant coaches includes Mike Gibbons, Garrett Raboin and volunteer goalie coach Dave Rogalski. THE NATIONAL: St. Cloud State University joined the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in The Huskies accepted the invitation to join The National in 2011, and they joined Colorado College, University of Denver, University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Nebraska Omaha, Miami University, University of North Dakota and Western Michigan as members of the new league this winter. 3 SCSU COACH BOB MOTZKO YEARS AT SCSU: 11th season CAREER RECORD: NCHC/WCHA CAREER RECORD: NCHC Coach of the Year 2014 WCHA Coach of the Year 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year 2006 The Motzko Story Bob Motzko is in his11th season at SCSU in The 2006 and 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year and 2014 NCHC Coach of the Year, Motzko has guided the Huskies to six WCHA Final Five appearances, a first place regular season finish in the NCHC in 2014, a first place regular season finish in the WCHA in 2013, a NCAA Midwest Regional title in 2013 and a berth in the 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2014 NCAA Division I tournaments. Motzko has charted an impressive overall record and has seen the Huskies ranked among the nation s top 20 teams for more than 126 weeks during his tenure at SCSU. The Huskies have advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in 2015 and the WCHA Final Five in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013 and they reached the WCHA Final Five championship games twice during the Motzko era in 2010 and 2006 and the NCHC Frozen Faceoff title match in Motzko also guided the Huskies to their first-ever NCAA playoff victory with a 4-3 2OT win over Northern Michigan at the Western Regional in 2010 along with the 2013 Midwest Regional title with wins over Notre Dame (5-1) and Miami (4-1). Motzko guided SCSU to its first-ever NCAA Frozen Four appearance in In 2014 and 2015, Motzko saw his Huskies advanced to the NCAA West Region title game. Motzko served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Individual honors have been many during the Motzko era at SCSU. In 2014, Nic Dowd was named a Hobey Baker Award top three finalist and was an AHCA First Team All-American. In 2013, Drew LeBlanc became SCSU s first-ever Hobey Baker Award winner. LeBlanc and Nick Jensen both earned All-America First Team status in 2013, and Ryan Lasch was a Hobey Baker Award Top 10 finalist and an AHCA All-American in In 2007, Motzko saw SCSU standout Bobby Goepfert named a Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist. SCSU freshman forward Andreas Nodl was named the 2007 HCA Division I Rookie of the Year and the 2007 WCHA Rookie of the Year. SCSU players have gained All-America honors six times during Motzko s tenure. A former SCSU hockey player and graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko served as a men s hockey assistant coach at the University of Minnesota since He was part of two NCAA Division I national championship teams in 2002 and 2003, and helped the Gophers win WCHA playoff crowns in 2003 and His four recruiting classes at Minnesota were considered among the best in the nation, and Motzko helped produce one Hobey Baker Award winner, three first team All-Americans, two second team All-Americans and many All- WCHA honorees at Minnesota. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State University, Motzko was a two-year varsity letterwinner for the SCSU hockey team from Motzko began his coaching career in as an assistant coach for the legendary Herb Brooks at SCSU - and also worked with former SCSU head coach Craig Dahl. Motzko went on to serve as general manager and head coach of the USHL s North Iowa Huskies from 1987 through In 1989, Motzko led the North Iowa squad to a United State Junior A national championship and was named that year s USHL Coach of the Year. In 1991, Motzko was named associate head coach at Miami University (Ohio), where he helped lead the RedHawks to a Central Collegiate Hockey Association title and an NCAA tournament berth in He served for one season as an associate head coach at the University of Denver from , before returning to Miami University in Motzko was named general manager and head coach of the USHL s Sioux Falls Stampede in He led the Stampede to a record in the team s first two seasons in the USHL, and in 2000, Motzko was named the USHL General Manager of the Year. A native of Austin, Minn., Motzko and his wife Shelley are the parents of three children. They currently reside in St. Cloud, Minn. 4 MORE NEWS AND NOTES START: The Huskies improved to on the season with a 4-0 and 3-0 series sweep at home against MSU Mankato on Oct On Friday night, SCSU s David Morley posted the game winner at 8:43 of the first while the Huskies other goals were scored by Jimmy Schuldt, Patrick Russell and Kalle Kossila. Netminder Charlie Lindgren made 30 saves on the way to the shutout...on Saturday, Russell posted the GWG at 4:20 of the first while Robby Jackson and Judd Peterson also had goals in the contest. Lindgren coined his second shutout of the series with 24 saves in the game...the start is SCSU s best start since going to begin the season. KILLING TIME: The Huskies penalty kill is a perfect 12-of-12 in On the power play, SCSU is 3-of-12 (.250) this season. AND THE AWARD GOES TO...: SCSU goalie Charlie Lindgren was selected as the NCHC Goaltender of the Week and the NCAA Charlie Lindgren #1 Star of the Week after his work vs. Mankato on Oct Lindgren charted his third consecutive shutout of the season with the Huskies 3-0 win vs. #14 Minnesota State. He opened the weekend with a 4-0 shutout against the Mavs and is now the first goalie in SCSU s Division I history (since ) to post three consecutive shutouts in three consecutive starts. Lindgren owns a perfect 0.00 goals against average and a save percentage in He has turned aside all 68 shots he has faced this season. Lindgren has six career shutouts at SCSU, which ranks third in the team records. Scott Meyer is the career shutout leader at SCSU with nine from 1996 to NEWCOMER NEWS: Freshman forward Robby Jackson tallied his third goal of the season on Oct. 17 rookie blueliner Jimmy Schuldt scored his first collegiate point and goal vs. Minnesota State on Oct AND COUNTING: Senior forward Kalle Kossila joined SCSU s 100-point cub on Oct. 9 with his assist on Joey Benik s power play goal at 2:07 of the first period. Kossila becomes just the 27th player in team history to score 100 career points. In 120 career games at SCSU, Kossila now has 35 goals and 69 assists. He had 1g/1a vs. MSU last weekend. ENG SPECIALIST: Judd Peterson posted an empty net goal to ice SCSU s 3-0 win over MSU on Oct. 17. Peterson and Robby Jackson are now tied for the team s goal scoring lead with three apiece in In his two years at SCSU, Peterson now has seven goals and 11 points. Peterson has two ENGs this season. SHORT STORY: Judd Peterson scored SCSU s first shorthanded goal of on Oct. 10 in the win over UAA. Peterson finished his weekend in Anchorage with two goals. Of note, SCSU s lone shorthanded goal in was posted by Joey Benik.. WINNER, WINNER: In , David Morley tied a team record with 5 game winners. He posted his first GWG of vs. MSU on Oct. 16. Morley now has 11 game winners in his career at SCSU. The team record for career game winners is 13, set by Joe Jensen ( ) and Ryan Lasch ( ). DRAFT PICK: Newcomer Will Borgen was selected by Buffalo in this year s NHL draft. He will join Judd Peterson (Buffalo) and Ben Storm (Colorado) as NHL drafted players on this year s roster. Of note, former Huskies Matt Cullen (Pittsburgh) and Matt Hendricks (Edmonton) are both listed on NHL rosters to start the season. DANDY DANE: Sophomore forward Patrick Russell continues to impress with a team leading six points this winter. Russell had two goals and two assists in the weekend sweep against MSU. On the year, Russell has four goals, two assists, 13 shots and is +5 on the plus/ minus. He is the only player on the roster from Denmark this season. He has totaled six points in his last three games played. RANDOM NOTES: Senior forward Joey Benik played in his 100th career game for the Huskies on Oct. 17 vs. Minnesota State. Benik has scored 38 goals and 43 assists during his time on campus.
