Part of the University of London, the London School is the largest institution of its kind in Europe with a remarkable depth and breadth of expertise encompassing many disciplines. The School was ranked one of the top 3 research institutions in the country in the Times Higher Education s 'table of excellence', which is based on the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). In 2009, the School became the first UK institution to win the Gates Award for Global Health. The School s environment is a rich multicultural one: there are around 3500 students from 100+ countries following 24 taught masters courses delivered either in London or through distance learning, and about 400 undertaking a research degree. Over 40% of these students are from non-european countries. Alumni are working in more than 180 countries. The School has about 1600 staff drawn from over 74 nationalities. There are research collaborations with over 100 countries throughout the world, utilizing our critical mass of multidisciplinary expertise which includes clinicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, social scientists, economists, molecular biologists, immunologists, ophthalmologists, anthropologists, virologists, pharmacologists and nutritionists. At any one time around 100 School staff are based overseas, particularly in Africa and Asia. We have a strong commitment to partnership with institutions in low and middle income countries to support the development of teaching and research capacity. The School has expanded greatly in recent years. Its research funding now exceeds 67M per annum, much of it from highly competitive national and international sources. The commitment of staff to methodological rigour, innovative thinking and policy relevance will ensure that the School continues to occupy a leadership position in national and global health, adapting quickly to new challenges and opportunities. 2 THE FACULTY The Faculty of Epidemiology & Population Health (EPH) houses a large group of epidemiologists, demographers, statisticians and nutritionists working on issues of major public health importance in the UK and globally. EPH has approximately 330 staff members organised into five research departments. Department of Population Studies Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology Department of Medical Statistics Department of Non-communicable Disease Epidemiology Department of Nutrition and Public Health Intervention Research he Faculty has a teaching programme consisting of ten MSc courses: Epidemiology, Demography and Health, Medical Statistics, Public Health in Developing Countries (run jointly with the Faculties of Infectious & Tropical Diseases and Public Health & Policy), Nutrition for Global Health, Reproductive & Sexual Health Research, Veterinary Epidemiology (run jointly with the Royal Veterinary College), Global Mental Health (run jointly with Kings College London - Institute of Psychiatry) and the Distance Learning courses in Epidemiology and Clinical Trials. The Faculty also has approximately 149 research students studying for an MPhil, PhD or DrPH degree. The Dean of Faculty is Professor John Edmunds. THE DEPARTMENT The Department of Population Health (DPH) aims to increase global access to effective treatments and public health interventions, and is a centre of excellence in the measurement and analysis of global consequences of population change. DPH is home to 5 major research groups: Nutrition Group: addressing major nutrition and food-related problems that affect human development, with expertise in under-nutrition, immunity & infection, nutritional genetics, nutrition-related chronic diseases, and agriculture & health; Global Mental Health: conducting research and capacity building in policy, prevention, treatment and care for people living with mental, neurological & substance use disorders; Maternal & Child Health Intervention Research: conducting intervention trials to improve maternal, new born & child survival, and child growth development; Clinical Trials Unit: a fully registered CTU under UK Clinical Research Collaboration, co-ordinating and conducting clinical trials in low, middle and high income countries; Population Studies Group: conducting research in reproductive & sexual health, the demographic impact of AIDS in Africa, family demography, health & ageing, and methodological work on measurement of health and technical demographic analysis. DPH hosts the network for Analysis of Longitudinal, Population-based data on HIV/AIDS in Africa (ALPHA), the Cochrane Injuries Group, and the Transport & Health Group, and has strong links with many overseas research groups. DPH provides world-class opportunities for postgraduate training; offering four masters courses: MSc Nutrition for Global Health, MSc Demography & Health, MSc Reproductive & Sexual Health Research, and the new MSc Global Mental Health. The Head of Department is Dr Phil Edwards. Teaching The School offers 22 one year full-time taught courses leading to the Master of Science (MSc) degree of the University of London and the Diploma of the London School of Hygiene

3 and Tropical Medicine (DLSHTM). The Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health runs 5 MSc programs, including a new MSc in Global Mental Health which started in September There will be opportunities for tutoring, taking seminars and marking in global mental health, epidemiological and statistical methods, and subject-specific topics on global health and non-communicable diseases. Teaching requirements The post-holders will be expected to spend up to 10% of their time each year contributing to the postgraduate teaching programme. Research Training The School offers two doctoral training programmes. The MPhil/PhD degrees are designed for those who wish to go on to a full time research career. The DrPH is directed towards those who expect their careers to be more in the practice of public health. THE CENTRE FOR GLOBAL MENTAL HEALTH (CGMH) The Centre for Global Mental Health (CGMH), launched on October 9 th 2009, is collaboration between LSHTM and Kings Health Partners (incorporating KCL, including the IoP and three of London s most successful NHS Foundation Trusts). The aim of the Centre is to foster research and capacity building in policy, prevention, treatment and care with the ultimate objective of closing the treatment gap for people living with mental, neurological and substance use disorders. The Centre aims to build on the existing collaborations and complementary strengths of these two institutions to foster research and training in policy, prevention, treatment and care. Over 100 staff members and over 20 Research Degree Students are members of the Centre. The Centre fosters collaborations between staff and students from the partner institutions in research, postgraduate education including research degree supervision, and collaboration with external partners. The CGMH has leveraged significant amounts of funding for large programs of work from international donors ( 17 million in 2010/11), cementing the reputation of the CGMH as the world leader in global mental health research. Examples of funded projects include the DfID funded Research Partnership Consortium PRIME, two NIMH funded Research Hubs in Mental Health (SHARE and AFFIRM), and a Medical Education Partnership Initiative led by the University of Zimbabwe in partnership with the Centre (IMHERZ). A key activity of the CGMH is the co-ordination of the new MSc in Global Mental Health, launched in September The MSc is jointly run by the LSHTM and the IoP-KCL, and is the world s first face-to-face Master program in global mental health.

4 JOB DESCRIPTION Post: Grade: Responsible to: Research Fellow in Global Mental Health Non-clinical academic Pathway Grade 6 Research Fellow Dr Mary De Silva Start Date: 1 st March 2015 Duties of the post Research To provide knowledge synthesis and knowledge exchange support to the Mental Health Innovation Network, including: Undertaking systematic reviews, research summaries, technical guides and case studies on topics identified as critical areas for the global mental health field, agreed through stakeholder consultation and in coordination with senior members of the MHIN team, and writing up these findings as peer-reviewed publications and other research outputs. Populating and maintaining an online repository of Global Mental Health resources including intervention manuals, intervention development protocols, cost and outcome assessment tools, and evaluation protocols Working with senior team members and partners at WHO to develop products such as policy briefings, technical guides and seminar/webinar content for dissemination to a range of audiences Actively populating and maintaining the MHIN website with information products Facilitating and monitoring the use of online MHIN special interest forums Sharing information products with priority user groups through website, event opportunities, training opportunities Acting as a focal point to GCC grantees and other users of MHIN for information and capacity building requests. Supporting the evaluation of MHIN, and writing quarterly and annual reports on project progress Providing support to GCC grantees in developing and using a Theory of Change method for the evaluation of Innovations in Global Mental Health To contribute to the dissemination of research findings from these projects, including presentations at local, national and international meetings and conferences, and preparation of scientific papers and policy briefs. Working on other CGMH research projects as appropriate. Contributing to writing grant applications to secure funding for MHIN and other CGMH projects as appropriate.

5 Teaching Contribute to the delivery of the post graduate teaching programme at LSHTM, and specifically for the MSc in Global Mental Health. This will include delivering practicals, facilitating group work, and being prepared to take on organisational roles, such as the coordination of a teaching module. Tutor 1-2 students on the MSc Global Mental Health, including supervising Summer Projects. Citizenship Take an active role in the running of the Centre for Global Mental Health for example by updating the website with news items, organizing seminar series and other events, or other activities as appropriate. Contribute to the life of LSHTM by participating in citizenship activities at the Department, Faculty and School level as opportunities arise. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential: 1. Master s degree in Global Mental Health, Public Health, Health Policy and Systems Research or a related subject 2. Experience of and/or a strong interest in the field of global mental health 3. Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary scientific team 4. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English 5. Willingness to attend international meetings as appropriate Desirable: 6. Experience in undertaking systematic reviews 7. Experience in using Theory of Change as an approach to guide implementation and evaluation of complex health interventions 8. Experience in health systems or health policy research 9. Experience in knowledge translation and working with policy makers 10. Fluency in one of WHO s official languages (other than English): Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish 11. A Doctoral degree in a related discipline or equivalent research experience 12. Experience of conducting research (preferably in a low resource setting) 13. Experience of postgraduate teaching 14. A track record of good quality peer-reviewed publications Accountability The post-holder will be responsible to Dr Mary De Silva and Professor Vikram Patel, with day to day management provided by Ms Lucy Lee. Line management will be through to the Head of the Department of Nutrition and Public Health Interventions at LSHTM. SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT The initial appointment will commence on 01 March 2015 for 3 months. The appointment will be based in the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health. The appointment will be on the non-clinical academic scale, with a starting salary in the range of 37,106 to 42,139 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience of the successful

6 candidate and including London weighting. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Membership of the USS Pension Scheme is available.
