I hope you all enjoy reading about past programs and exploring the new ones offered. It important that all programs and activities remain relevant to the membership so it is in your interest to suggest new topics to be covered or even better to offer your services to educate others about your interests etc. This can be done by contacting Jannette on jannette@apollobay.u3a.org.au Remember U3A is member driven and your input is important. 2 Upcoming Courses AMERICA: THE PROBLEM WITH PRESIDENTS starting 10.30am 12 noon, Thursday 9 October 2014 Tutor/Facilitator Ray Nichols. WHAT THIS COURSE IS ABOUT: Many people wish to emulate the US Presidency in their own national politics, even in Australia. This course suggests this is a dubious idea. It outlines the differences between the American and Westminster systems of government, including the complexities of Presidential election; it spells out the Constitutional bases of the Presidency; and it traces Presidents' subsequent accumulation of great extra-constitutional power. It then focuses on the extraordinary abuses of that power under Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush, and looks at the troubling backlashes against it under Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. It concludes by asking what lessons the American case has for Australia. (8 sessions.) Senior Citizens, Tuesday 9 October - 27 November, 10.30am - 12 noon. Introduction to Western Philosophy Socrates Starts 2.00pm -3.30pm Tuesday 14 October Do you have any enquiring mind?? Do you like throwing ideas around? Do you like learning about new ways of thinking?? Then perhaps the U3A Introduction to Western Philosophy is for you! In the course you will learn about philosophy and philosophers, and ponder the questions and answers that have been perplexing thinking men and women over the ages. You may choose to reflect, agree or disagree or perhaps come up with your own answers as we move through the course material. Perhaps incorporating some of the possibilities into your way of seeing things could add greater richness to your life! No background knowledge is assumed, but perhaps an open mind and a willingness to learn, listen, and ponder. As it might be a daunting activity to enter on your own, we are offering the opportunity to join a discussion group where you can share your thoughts and ideas arising from the course readings. Like most learning activities, more may be achieved personally if you undertake the suggested course activities prior to each meeting. Printed course material can be provided for those who do not have online facilities. Meets fortnightly. Room 4, Marrar Woorn Starts Tuesday 14 October, pm.
3 Past Programs and Activities TABLETS AND HOW TO USE THEM We recently ran a course with the help of students from Apollo Bay P-12 College on how to use ipads, Androids, Windows in fact all kinds of tablets (The electronic type). The sessions were a great benefit to U3A members who wanted to learn how to use their tablets or were thinking of buying a tablet. The students learned valuable lessons in how to plan and give instructions in using equipment. This was only a small part of the students curriculum but we still have U3A members who would like help with using their Tablets. This is a PLEA for HELPERS. Are you familiar with using Tablets for a variety of tasks? Are you prepared to offer some of your time to help others just getting started? We see an hour or so could be set aside once a fortnight or even once a month at Marrar Woorn, and people can drop by and ask their questions. CAN YOU HELP? CONTACT: Jannette Byrne on or jannette@u3a.apollobay.org.au FISHING FOR BEGINNERS Andrew Orchard, coordinator of the Apollo Bay Informal Fishing group has had a keen bunch of fishermen and women learning the skills and tricks in fishing around Apollo Bay. He covered the essential gear needed for the beginner, how to set up the gear with the right knots and rigs, he spoke about the best local fishing spots, and a practical demonstration at a local site pulled it all together. GYOTAKU Victoria Howlett was keen to join the Fishing for beginners course and thought participants might be interested in creating an art work from their results of their days fishing. Victoria will teach Gyotaku to those course participants who are interested. Gyotaku is the ancient Japanese folk art of printing fish. The first gyotaku were created to preserve the true record and size of species caught by Japanese anglers as far back as She assures us that the process is simple and the results are impressive and attractive. Since promoting the Fishing course and the add-on session people have asked if they can learn Gyotaku even if they haven t attended the fishing course. The answer is YES. Watch for date and time.
4 MOVIE TIME Held the third Monday of the month, 2pm at the CFA training room Pascoe Street. You can come along, enjoy the movie and a cuppa afterwards. Suggestions for movies to screen are most welcome. Movie Time, meets 3rd Monday of the month at the CFA Training Room, Pascoe Street. FANCY A VISIT TO THE GRAMPIANS? The Ararat, Ballarat, Hepburn and Stawell U3A groups have organised a gathering for all Victorian U3A members. The gathering is to be held at Halls Gap from October An interesting variety of activities has been organised and accommodation /meal packages are available. For more information contact Lynne on or onegossip@bigpond.com (Members from Apollo Bay may be interested in car-pooling) Welding A small group of people are currently involved in learning basic welding. Currently this program is full up but will again be offered in the future. You can register your interest now. Winemaking The wine is currently resting and maturing in the vat. In a couple of months members of the group will again become active and will need to bottle and label the finished wine. The full bottles will then be distributed to the group members for laying down (or drinking). Currently members are looking for empty wine bottles (red). Screw on caps are fine as long as caps are saved along with the bottles. We will collect so contact Rod rodney.natt@bigpond.com when you have some. Keep your eye out for Sudoku, chess or similar activities in the future.
5 Sudoku Genealogy A small but enthusiastic group meets regularly developing their family histories etc. If you would like to be included in this group please contact jannette@apollobay.u3a.org.au or phone Marrar Woorn Starts Wednesday 8 October, 2-4pm. Meets weekly. This one is rated hard. Do you have a passion for something whether a hobby, interest etc? Or do you know somebody who has and would like to share it with others? If you answered Yes then contact U3A Apollo Bay Inc. Committee members and become a presenter. Also coming up during Term 4 Dates and times will be announced in the Apollo Bay News sheet Visits to the galleries Apollo Bay has an active Arts community, U3A is happy to link with our local artists to visit them in their work places, to view some of their work, and have an opportunity to discuss their art making with them.
