Sessions 1 & Creating Assessments Using Online Tools PRDV74419 Online 1 Credit Instructor: Barbara Murray bmurray3@framingham.edu Course Description: Welcome to Creating Assessments Using Online Tools. Differentiating Assessments is important as teachers strive to incorporate creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills into their curriculum. During this course teachers will develop skills with the application of digital resources to be used for assessments that promote 21 st Century Skills. Participants will learn how to integrate Socrative, Quizlet, Animoto, and Google Form Assessments as tools for differentiated lessons and assessments. Each module will focus on one digital resource that can be incorporated into a lesson with assessments that provides students with the opportunity of enhancing their higher-order thinking skills. Each week will include hands on activities for each new resource where you will develop exemplars to share with your students. Course Goals Teachers will learn and effectively use online digital resources that will provide differentiation to lessons and engagement both in and out of school. Participants will learn how to integrate the following web tools, Socrative, Quizlet, Animoto, and Google Forms with Flubaroo Script in using online tools with students for review/assessments and presentation tools. The digital resources introduced in this course will enable teachers to differentiate lessons & assessments for all students. Course Objectives By the end of this course, the participants will be able to: 1. Explain & demonstrate how online tools can be used by students to demonstrate their knowledge of curriculum. 2. Create teacher accounts for Socrative, Quizlet, Animoto and Google. 3. Develop differentiated activities and assessments integrating all online tools introduced in this course. 4. Choose digital online tools that best meet lesson objective through application and reflection. 5. To collaborate with colleagues to design best practice strategies for each tool.
Course Expectation Participation in all assignments and course discussion is required. In the event of an unplanned absence, it is the responsibility of the student at the discretion of the instructor to complete all missed work. Participants are expected to have basic computer skills, know how to search the web, understand how to send an and attach a file and have basic file management skills. A fairly new computer connected to the Internet works best with Blackboard and familiarity with the learning management tool is also advised. If you are new to Blackboard or online courses, please review the Blackboard student tutorial before you begin the course. By logging into Blackboard, you agree to the university Acceptable Use Policy that also covers academic honesty. Grading Criteria Grades are recorded in the course grade book on a weighted point system. Students may view their progress using the My Grades Tool listed under Student Tools on Blackboard. The orientation activity, posts to the discussion board and the class collaboration are all included in the Participation grade. Students are also expected to post weekly private reflections to a Blog and links to each week tools created as well as weekly assignments for each unit. Assignments Points Possible Weighted Grade Participation 50% Introduction: Who is in the room post? 5 Weekly Blog post (4 in all) 40 Final Journal Reflection 5 Weekly Assignments 50% Socrative Assignment 10 Quizlet Assignment 10 Animoto 15 Google Forms with Flubaroo Script 15
Each weekly unit will incorporate the Massachusetts Technology Literacy Standard 3: Demonstrate the ability to use technology for research, critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation: This standard: Focuses on applying a wide range of technology tools to student learning and everyday life. Aims to ensure that students will be able to use technology to process and analyze information. Is to help students develop skills for effective technology-based communication. Includes the use of technology to explore and create new ideas, identify trends, and forecast possibilities. Aims to provide students with an awareness of how technology is used in the real world. Course Schedule (Day 1) Class orientation: Review the course syllabus and post a response to the question, Who is in the room under the Unit Material Folder. Due Thursday Oct.8, 2015 Unit Materials Tab is where you will find each week s activities and assignments. Each unit has three parts: assignment, blog and journal. The assignments are listed below. Blog and Journal response directions are posted in the course shell. Unit 1: What is Socrative? Socrative is a smart student response system that empowers teachers to engage their classrooms through a series of educational exercises and games via smartphones, laptops, and tablets with instance classroom results. Teachers will learn how to use this site and develop activities to use with their students. We are going to Explore Socrative Version2.0 this week. Mastery Connect acquired Socrative over the summer and Socrative added new features. 1. Log into Socrative 2.0 and create a teacher account. You may also want to download the free apps for teacher and student for your mobile device or ipad. 2. Watch the video on the home page for an overview. 3. Click on the resource tab. Here you will find, User Guide (I would recommend downloading this for future use), Videos, Training Pack and Blog. 4. Go to the Video Tab and watch all the short clips. You may want to start with Creating a Quiz. 5. Create a quiz with a minimum of 5 questions and include at least two images. 6. Now open a second window/tab on your computer and join your room. Answer the questions like your students would and see the instant results. Have your students take the quiz if you have the devices in your classroom to use. Now run a space race and ticket out too. 7. Save your results from each activity as a spreadsheet and post it to the Socrative Assignment. (Click right on Socrative Assignment to get to posting link. You should have three spreadsheets, one for each activity to post (quiz, space
race and ticket out). Indicate that you would like to share your activities and submit your share code with your spreadsheet. Assignment due Oct. 12, 2015 at 8:00pm Blog and Journal entries requirements will be listed in the unit materials. Unit 2: What is Quizlet? Quizlet is a free website providing learning tools for students, including flashcards, study and game modes. All of the material is user-generated. Teachers will learn how to create sets for their students, and demonstrate for students how they can create their own sets as a study tool. 1. Watch this video Getting started with Quizlet. 2.Click here to visit my Quizlet lists and review the lists in the classroom, Creating Online Assessment class. Here you will find a few exemplars of what other Teachers have created. I have used Quizlet for vocabulary and comprehension review with a question on one side of the flash card and the answer on the other. Students can test themselves or you can assign a test to them. I have assigned the test as a homework assignment and used it in class as a test in the moment. After students have taken the test and submit for correction, you have a corrected test that they can print out. 3. Now read all about quizlet at What is Quizlet: 4. Create a free teacher Quizlet account and read the teacher testimonials at the bottom of the page. On the left hand side of the page you will see a box that says, New Introducing Class Progress. This wonderful feature used to be free. This feature is bundled with other features in the teacher upgrade account, which costs $25. For our purposes the free account provides plenty of great features. 5. Create a list of words in your content area that you can use with your students. Add at least 3 images by clicking the search image button. (Uploading your own photos is part of the teacher account). There are plenty of free images to get you started. Test out the games and quiz options. Do not privatize this list. Post your Quizlet link and user name to the class assignment along with your explanation of which activities you feel will best meet the needs of your students and why. For submission you need to click right on the title Quizlet Assignment that brings you to the submission page. Assignment due Monday Oct. 19 th by 8:00 pm. Unit 3: What is an Animoto Video? Animoto is a cloud-based video creation services that produces videos from photos, video clips and music into a video slideshow. Education accounts can have up to a 3-minute video. This is a great communication tool for teachers and students. Teachers can use Animoto for announcements or class review. Students can share what they have learned with an Animoto presentation. Teachers can sign up for an Education Account for free at: Animoto for Educator's 2. Create an Educator Animoto Account with your school . If you are not issued a
code within a few minutes, you may want to use your personal to create a trial account. Animoto says it may take a couple of weeks to get your school code, however our teachers got their codes within a few minutes. Y 3. Watch the Video How to Create an Animoto Video. 4. Watch this video on Creating Student Accounts. You are not required to do this during this class. However, I wanted you to see the possibility of using it with students, especially those under Create an Animoto video and share the link with me through your assignment. Your Animoto Video, along with your Blog and Journal Entry are due on Monday Oct. 26th at 8pm. Unit 4: Google Form with Flubaroo. Please choose the online tool that you feel will benefit you and your students the most. Google Forms and Flubaroo: An awesome tool for graded tests and quizzes. 1. Create a Google account if you don't have one already at: Google Sign Up link 2. Watch the video where I explain how to use Google Forms: See course shell. 3. Check out the official Flubaroo site and explore other resources available for you Create a test of ten questions for your content area. Take the test three times (don't forget your answer key) grade it with flubaroo. Post your link and copies of the graded excel spreadsheet to the assignment due Friday Oct. 30th at 8:00pm. Questions: You may also send me an at Bmurray3@framingham.edu Questions will be answered within 24 to 48 hours. Accommodations: Framingham State University offers equal opportunities to all qualified students, including those with disabilities and impairments.
