3 Introduction The 2168 Employment Pathways Directory aims to map the opportunities available for people in relation to employment, education and training. The directory enables residents and organisations to have access to a resource which informs them about which programs and services are available to them within their particular circumstance. How to use the 2168 Employment Pathways Directory Simply look at the Index for the service that will most apply to you. If any extra guidance is needed, three case studies have been included on page 4, with suggested programs that may provide assistance to your situation. This document was developed by Kristina Oroz, social work student, for the Community 2168 Employment and Education Working Party. Design and layout by Nalini Sharma. 6 Case Studies Daniel is in Year 9. He is not sure what he wants to do but he knows that he is not happy at school and wants to leave. Daniel loves cars and sometimes dreams about being a mechanic for one of the V8 racing teams. He would like to leave school and do an apprenticeship but he does know where to start. He thinks they run the course at the local TAFE but he is not sure. He does not want to ask anyone at school. 7 Elias has been unemployed since injuring his back twelve years ago when working in a factory. At forty five years of age Elias is happy to be on a disability pension. It means that he has a steady income and doesn t have the stress of looking for work and submitting forms to Centrelink. Elias has received a letter in the mail asking him to attend an appointment at his local Centrelink office so he can undertake a Job Capacity Assessment. His English is poor and he doesn t understand all the contents of the letter. He is beginning to worry and doesn t know where he can get help. Eligibility: 16 + Hours: Monday to Friday 7am - 4pm Break Thru Employment Solutions - Disability Employment Solutions Contact: Lynne Hudson Phone: Fax: Website: Program Description: We specialise in intellectual disability and learning problems. Acquired brain injury, epilepsy, tourettes, ADD/ADHD, Aspergers Syndrome. We are also happy to accept referrals for all other disability groups. We focus on supporting clients to gain the necessary skills and connections with their local communities to find a job. We provide specialist prevocational assistance, one-to-one and through our job seeker action group (JAG). JAG focuses on developing work skills and motivating clients to find a job in line with their vocational goals. We provide on the job support and training, working with the employer and the client. Our support is reduced as the client becomes more competent and confident in their workplace. We can provide access to workplace subsidies, workplace modifications and aids if necessary to support the clients successful transition into work. 9 Break Thru Employment Solutions Post School Options / Transition to Work Contact: Lynne Hudson Phone: Fax: Website: Program Description: We specialise in intellectual disability and learning problems. Acquired brain injury, epilepsy, tourettes, ADD/ADHD, Aspergers Syndrome. We are also happy to accept referrals for all other disability groups. We focus on supporting clients to gain the necessary skills and connections with their local communities to make the transition from school to work. We focus on life skills, social skills and work skills. We provide individualised and group based programs catering to people s specialised needs. Break Thru s TTWS program also has direct access to our Disability Open Employment Program. Hours: Monday to Friday 8.45am - 5pm Break Thru Employment Solutions Vocational Rehabilitation Program Contact: Robyn Miller Phone: Fax: Suite 2, Level Bigge St, Liverpool NSW 2170 Program Description: Vocational Rehabilitation Services for eligible job seekers referred via Centrelink and capacity for some eligible self referral. Service addresses barriers to employment via access rehabilitation interventions and comprehensive vocational assistance including re-training job seeking, job placement and worksite / employer support. Eligibility: Refugees, Centrelink benefits, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, NESB, CALD, unemployed, homeless, disability, mental illness, exoffenders, young offenders and mature aged. As long as all of the above have significant barriers to employment, they are eligible for this program. Age Group: No restrictions Duration of Program: ongoing Café Horizons Organisation: The Salvation Army Contact: Jason McMillen Phone: Fax: Shop 2 & 3, 219 Cabramatta Rd, Cabramatta NSW 2166 Program Description: Café Horizons is a unique place for young people to come and get skills, experience as well as qualifications in Hospitality. We offer a 20 week program that is full time. The program offers a supportive environment for those who have found mainstream education difficult or unsuccessful. 10 will have the opportunity to study a Certificate l or Certificate ll in Hospitality (Operations). Get work experience, on the job training. We have 7 areas of service that you will get to experience. These include: Foccacia Prepare and serve a range of tasty sandwiches and foccacias. Till Handle all monetary transactions by operating the till. Wait Staff Greet customers, take orders and serve their meals. Stove and Grill Prepare and serve hot food items. Kitchen Hand Wash and put away all plates, cutlery, glassware and kitchen equipment. Salad Hand Prepare and serve salads and garnishes. Barista Prepare and serve all hot drinks. These include cappuccino, café latte and mocha coffees. Each of these positions can lead to a specialised career in the hospitality field. Eligibility: Specific Age Groups, Early School Leavers. Duration of Program: 20 weeks Hours: Monday to Friday 8.45am - 4pm Careers Advice Australia - Local Community Partnership Organisation: Liverpool Workplace Learning Partnership Contact: Ann Gibney Phone: Program Description: Community organisation that assists all year olds to get the skills, experience and professional guidance they need to make a successful transition through school and onto further education, training and employment. Structured workplace learning provides valuable industry experience for students and an opportunity for employers to view the skills of potential new employees. Career and Transition Support provides a range of career development and transition support activities. Adopt a School Program encourages businesses to "adopt" a school in order to give young people hands on industry experience. 11 Careers Advice Australia - Regional Industry Careers Adviser Organisation: Australian Industry Group Contact: Janelle Henson Phone: Program Description: Provide regional industry career information, advice and resources, particularly in areas of skills shortages and needs. Provide Local Environmental Scan. Work with Industry to establish links, gain industry knowledge and facilitate participation to meet needs. Work with Local Community Partnerships to provide industry career information to year olds. Eligibility: Employers and Industry, Young people aged years, Parents and community in Liverpool, Fairfield and Campbelltown, Outer South Western Sydney Age Group: years, Young people Duration of Program: Ongoing Hours: Monday to Friday 9am- 5pm CatholicCare Direct Employment, Liverpool Contact: Manager Phone: Fax: Program Description: Assists people who have a mild to moderate intellectual disability, learning difficulty or acquired brain injury in gaining open employment. Accessible to people from Non English Speaking Backgrounds. Also referral to employment service providers. Centrelink also offers jobseekers free access to Job Kiosks. 12 Centrelink Multilingual Service (CMS) Organisation: Centrelink Phone: Website: Program Description: Centrelink provides free interpreter services for interviews and free translation of documents relating to Centrelink business. Multicultural Service Officers consult widely with local migrant and refugee communities on Government programs and help Centrelink improve its services. Centrelink also has regular broadcasts in many languages on SBS radio and on community radio stations across Australia. The main aims are 1) Build relationships and forge links, including with industries, to enable a flexible, responsive and seamless service for our customers 2) Enhance the employment and training opportunities for residents in ) Provide a forum where collaboration is encouraged and facilitated 4) Promote positive employment and education outcomes past, present and future 5) Develop responses to identified needs and respond to current and/or emerging opportunities. The Working Party coordinates an annual employment and education expo at TAFE NSW Miller College. Eligibility: Individuals, organisations, businesses and schools who are interested in education and employment are welcome to attend Hours: The working party meets approximately once a month Community Work Coordinator Service (Work for the Dole) Organisation: MTC Work Solutions Contact: Eddie Ooi Phone: Fax: Level 1, George St, Liverpool NSW 2170 Program Description: The program provides opportunities for job seekers to gain work experience while doing something worthwhile for the community. It is also an approved activity for mutual obligation purposes. Eligibility: Centrelink benefits, unemployed. Age Group: 18 + Duration of Program: 3 years Hours: Monday to Friday 8.30am - 5pm Counselling and Career Service Organisation: TAFE NSW South Western Sydney Institute, Miller College Contact: Patty Malak Phone: Fax: Room M.1.57, Miller College, Cnr Hoxton Park and Banks Roads, Miller 2168 Program Description: Free career and education counselling to current and intending students. TAFE Counsellors have an extensive knowledge of TAFE NSW programs and services, as well as other educational and vocational pathways and can help people with their educational and course planning. Once enrolled as a student, TAFE Counsellors can also assist in a variety of matters including educational difficulties, career choice, development or 2168 Employment Pathways Directory 13

14 change, personal problems such as depression and anxiety, financial assistance schemes such as Youth Allowance and referral to other services. CRS Australia Phone: Fax: Website: Program Description: Provides vocational rehabilitation services to people with an injury, disability or health condition. Includes assistance finding and keeping a job or returning to work after injury or illness through client assessment (to identify specific vocational barriers and capacity), personal support (to help clients manage injury or disability), career planning and specialised job matching and placement. Also provide Occupational Health and Safety consultancy services to employers Eligibility: People with a disability and the unemployed. Disability Employment Network Organisation: Breakthrough Employment Solutions Contact: Narelle Dutton Phone: Fax: Program Description: The Disability Employment Network support people with barriers / disabilities to find and maintain employment. The program also helps with training. Eligibility: Open to all Age Group: 16 + Duration of Program: 18 months to 2 years Hours: Monday to Friday 8.45am - 5pm Environment Volunteer Program Organisation: Liverpool City Council Contact: Melissa Clarke Phone: Fax: Hoxton Park Rd, Liverpool Program Description: The programs help volunteers to gain skills. The program protects and restores Liverpool s natural environment by planting trees, and removing weeds and rubbish from local parks and reserves. With 37 sites across Australia and the commitment and tools to match the people with the right skills and experience to the requirements of employers. MAXNetWork is in the forefront of providing quality Job Network services in Australia. Eligibility: 15+. Job-seekers with a disability, must be Centrelink approved. Hours: Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm Gandangara Employment Training Services (GETS) Organisation: Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council Contact: Carol-Ann Flanagan Phone: Fax: Level 1, 103 Moore St, Liverpool NSW 2170 Program Description: Provides training and employment opportunities for people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background including RSA, Forklift license and various certificates. Works with community members to explore education and career pathways. Areas within this environment include meeting targets and other objectives. Through Charity Computers we offer the community used computers ranging from Pentium 2 to Pentium 4 in both PC and laptops. These computers are donated to our organisation and then refurbished by our team here at Inspire Community. We also offer a screen printing service such as logo printing on t-shirts and work uniforms. Our aim is to create a professional business structure to allow people to gain appropriate skills to start a new business. Eligibility: Open to all Age Group: All ages Hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm Inspire Community Services Training Contact: Adam Boyes Phone: Fax: Unit 18, Jedda Rd, Prestons NSW 2170 Website: Program Description: Training Services offers a variety of training ranging from accredited courses including Certificate III in Transport Logistics (Road transport) to non accredited courses, including courses like: Certificate in Barista and Basics in Computing. Training packages are specially created to meet the needs of the individual. Courses are designed to increase clients confidence in areas where they may have experienced limitation before as well as enhancing skills already possessed by clients. Also assists people receiving widow pension or allowance, carers pension, partner allowances and parenting payments. Appointment essential. 18 Liverpool Business Enterprise Centre Organisation: Liverpool Business Enterprise Centre Phone: Fax: (02) Suite 204, 161 Bigge Street, Liverpool NSW 2170 Website: Program description: Liverpool BEC via the South West Sydney Business Advisory Service provides a comprehensive support service to small businesses in the region. The BEC provides free business guidance and services to assist small businesses to establish, grow and mature. In addition to the sessions small business owners and operators are able to attend free business seminars across Liverpool and Macarthur. Liverpool BEC encourages small business owners and operators to use this free service to give their business venture every opportunity to be as successful as possible. Eligibility: Open to all Age group: Any age Hours: Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm Liverpool Volunteer Resource Centre Contact: Louise Meuwissen Phone: Fax: Liverpool City Library, 170 George St, Liverpool NSW 2170 Program Description: Recruits volunteers and matches them to vacant volunteer positions within non-profit organisations in the local area. The centre also provides training for the staff, volunteers and management committees for organisations that work with volunteers. The program aims to help older people to seek employment. Each has a different need which is considered. This year MAX Employment will help more than 150,000 Australians achieve lifestyle and job related goals. Provides employment, health, training and consulting solutions. One of the largest employment service providers, operating from 74 offices and 40 outreach locations across Australia. New courses and programs are offered every month such as Work Experience, Work For the Dole, Job focus groups, Career Tracks, Meals In Motion. Eligibility: Any person receiving a Centrelink benefit Age Group: All ages Duration of program: Various Hours: Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm Mental Heath First Aid Organisation: SSWAHS Contact: Emily Low Phone: Fax: Mental Health Centre Locked Bag 7103, Liverpool NSW 2170 Program Description: Mental health first aid is a mental health literacy program. The course runs for 12 hours and addresses the common mental illnesses and applies the ALGEE strategy to crisis situations. However, this course in not recommended for people presently experiencing disabling 2168 Employment Pathways Directory 19

20 mental health problems, just as general first aid is not for people suffering a major injury. Eligibility: Open to all Age Group: 18 + Duration of Program: 12 hours Hours: Various Miller Breakfast Club Organisation: Inspire Community Services Contact: Geoff Kelly Phone: Fax: The Hub, 16 Woodward Cres, Miller NSW 2168 Program Description: Provides job search assistance such as help with resumes and job searching with a free breakfast for job seekers, access to internet, newspapers and phones all free of charge. Eligibility: Unemployed Age Group: All ages Duration of program: 2 hours, once per week Hours: Thursday 9am to 11am Mission Australia, Liverpool Contact: Alan McKay Phone: Lachlan St, Liverpool NSW 2170 Program Description: The agency provides crisis accommodation and case management. Eligibility: Homeless or a specific age group. Age Group: 18 + Hours: Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm Mission Australia, Miller Contact: Carol Reddy Phone: Fax: Shropshire St, Miller NSW 2168 Program Description: Job placement centre for unemployed people. 21 MTC Work Solutions - Liverpool Job Services Australia branch Contact: Reception Phone: Fax: Website: Program Description: Assists people to gain employment, skills training, personal development, work experience and career planning. Services include in-house workshops, Business Simulation programs, work experience, and intensive training activities, as well as Job Brokerage and Post Placement Support to assist clients to maintain employment. Liverpool interacts with other divisions of MTC to provide a comprehensive solution to employment related needs. The New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) business mentor is also available to meet with clients who are interested in participating in the NEIS program. Can also provide referrals to other MTC programs such as NEIS, Youth Pathways, Links to Learning, Connections, and Language, Literacy and Numeracy and the Productivity Places Program.
