REHABILITATION PROVIDERS AND WORKCOVER WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR REHABILITATION PROVIDER WorkCover. Watching out for you. New South Wales Government

REHABILITATION PROVIDERS Accredited rehabilitation providers who operate in the NSW Workers Compensation system assist injured workers return to work by providing expert advice and services in consultation with workers, employers and insurers that are tailored to their specific circumstances. This guide has been developed to provide workers and employers with information regarding the role and services of accredited rehabilitation providers, with the aim of promoting active participation in a safe return to work. By providing you with this information, it is WorkCover s aim to allow you to make the best choices in the return to work services available. WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL REHABILITATION? Occupational Rehabilitation is the process of helping an injured worker return to work following a workplace injury. Occupational Rehabilitation services include: assessment of the worker s and employer s needs advice about equipment or modifying the job the worker does helping employers to find suitable duties for the worker facilitating communication between the worker, employer, doctor and insurer assistance with identifying and obtaining a new job if the worker is unable to return to their job. Generally an employer, insurer or treating doctor will use their experience and industry knowledge to recommend an accredited rehabilitation provider to help an injured worker safely return to work. The injured worker has a say in choosing a provider and needs to be consulted on this referral.

WHAT IS AN ACCREDITED REHABILITATION PROVIDER? Occupational rehabilitation providers are organisations offering specialised rehabilitation services. To ensure quality service delivery WorkCover NSW accredits occupational rehabilitation providers and monitors their performance. Occupational rehabilitation provider organisations must have appropriately qualified staff with skills, knowledge and experience to deliver rehabilitation services. They consist of a team of health professionals such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, rehabilitation counsellors and psychologists, whose aim is to help injured workers safely return to work. Return to work same job Accredited rehabilitation providers are required to develop a return to work plan that outlines how the injured worker will get back to work. This involves: consultation with a worker, employer, insurer, nominated treating doctor and union (if involved) consideration of a worker s current condition and abilities, employer requirements and the industrial setting assistance to identify suitable duties reviewing progress to make sure there is a successful return to work negotiation with all parties to help them work together advising on the need for special equipment or necessary workplace modifications determining if a worker has the capability to remain in a job or needs to return to work in a new job. Return to work new job Most injured workers can return to their pre-injury job. However, for those unable to do so, some occupational rehabilitation providers are accredited to assist an injured worker to find a new job.

An accredited rehabilitation provider is required to develop a return to work plan that outlines how a worker will find a new job. This involves: identifying work options within the labour market organising training if necessary (see vocational programs) helping a worker develop job seeking skills providing assistance in obtaining a suitable job finding a host employer for on-the-job training (see vocational program resources). Fees The costs of rehabilitation provider services are paid by the insurer, and are recorded as a claims cost. Therefore, the insurer needs to engage the rehabilitation provider prior to commencement of any rehabilitation services. The rehabilitation provider is then required to outline the injured workers needs to the insurer to obtain approval and keep the insurer informed of progress. QUESTIONS YOU MAY WISH TO ASK YOUR REHABILITATION PROVIDER: Injured worker: What do I have to do to go back to work? How will you assist me to return to my job? What does my employer have to do? What do my insurer and doctor have to do? Who has access to information about my rehabilitation? What can you do to help me get a new job? Do you have any special expertise in my type of injury? How often will I see you or hear from you? What program or resources can you offer to help me get a new job? (see vocational programs)

Employer: How will you assist my employee to return to work? How long will this take? What do I need to do to assist my employee return to work? What is your success rate and average cost for such services? VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS WorkCover funds a range of programs to assist a worker to retain their job or get a new job: work trial up to 12 weeks of on-the-job work experience to help an injured worker upgrade their fitness and/or learn new skills formal retraining assistance developing new skills and qualifications to find work, which involves undertaking a formal course of study with an established educational institution equipment or modifications the purchase of equipment that is necessary to accommodate a worker s functional restrictions and enable them to return to suitable employment, or safely and successfully participate in retraining JobCover Placement Program assists an injured worker who needs to find employment with a new employer by providing a maximum 12 week, $300 per week gross wage subsidy to the new employer. NEED HELP? Concerns about rehabilitation providers should be discussed with the manager of the provider company. If this does not solve the problem, call your insurer or contact the Provider Services Group at WorkCover on If the issue is still not resolved, referral to another rehabilitation provider may be approved.

For a list of current WorkCover accredited rehabilitation providers, visit the WorkCover website on: RehabilitationProviders/accrehabprov For other information call the WorkCover Information Line on: If you do not speak English and need someone to explain the information in your own language, call the Telephone Interpreter Service on and ask the interpreter to call the Provider Services Group.
