Approximately ¼ Mile South of Gateway s between NE 20 th St. & Oak Street, Boynton Beach, FL October 17, 2013 Speaker for October 22, 2013 Meeting Brett Fitzgerald Chief Executive Officer of the Snook & Gamefish Foundation Brett served as Chairman from , and as Regional Director (SouthEast) for three years prior. He is a contributing editor to Florida Sportsman Magazine, and a special education instructor at in the Palm Beach County school system for 12 years where he promoted an academic curriculum through environmentalism and resource conservation. Brett served in the United States Army in both Intelligence and as a Paratrooper with Special Forces Operations. He attended University of South Florida and holds a Bachelor's and a Masters degree in Communications Sciences and Disorders. He is an expert guitar player, fly tyer, photographer and fisherman. Brett was chosen as Snook and Gamefish Foundation's 2009 Person on the Year for his accomplishments on behalf of inshore fishing, and in that year he also completed the book, Sportsman's Best: Snook. What is the Snook and Gamefish Foundation? The Snook and Gamefish Foundation is a not for profit 501 c 3 Corporation organized by William R Mote, in 1998, as a platform for anglers and conservationists to preserve, protect and enhance gamefish populations. Mote believed that a brighter future for all fisheries is in the hands of informed anglers. Mote is also the founder of Mote Marine Laboratories - known around the world. What does the Snook and Gamefish Foundation do? The Snook and Gamefish Foundation focuses on Research, Education and Conservation projects. The Angler Action Program, is an excellent example of connecting anglers with researchers for fishery management and stock assessment. The Angler Alert E- Newsletter, currently sent to 120,000 subscribers two times a month, is an example of outreach education,
2 along with the SmartAngler Challenge online quiz. Members across the state are involved in habitat protection and research projects specific for inshore gamefish. He'll give us an update on what's being done to improve Snook habitat & fishing. Website: Come Early Seating Is Limited Raffle drawing will be held. Support your club and buy some tickets for your chance to win FISHING REPORT The cooler weather and ground swells have helped turn the corner for anglers this autumn. Off shore, anglers should expect to see more Spanish mackerel, sailfish and the dreaded bluefish. In the Intracoastal, pompano, Spanish mackerel and jacks will and have started biting in good numbers. Other great news is the size and number of mullet schools moving in close to shore daily. Spanish mackerel have been running the inlets from Brevard County south to St. Lucie County. If we do get the next cold front down this far Spanish mackerel may start running the Jupiter to Lake Worth Inlets. The fish move southward pushed by the north swells of the cold front and as they follow the annual October mullet run. If there is more north swells this weekend fishing from the Lake Worth Pier may be the best place to be for Spanish mackerel in central and southern Palm Beach County. From about three quarters of the way out to all the way to the end of the pier the water depth is deep enough to host the mullet as they move along the beach and it is at a depth where anglers can easily bounce live shrimp along the bottom. It all depends on the tide, how clear the water is and if the mullet make it this far south by the weekend. Kingfish action could be better, but for this time of year, it isn t that bad. Fish in water 125 to 150 feet deep with cut mullet, whole sardines or bonito belly baits and you should catch a kingfish or two. Dolphin catches have slowed way down and we may not have a lot to talk about for the next few weeks as the annual mullet run passes our way. Sailfish however are getting very active, north of the Jupiter Inlet. The weekend cool snap turned these fish on. If you want to catch a trophy sailfish, now is the time to call and charter a boat that specializes in catching sailfish. If you wait too long you may not get the date you want.
