3 Welcome Due to bushfire in the Southwest National Park our Australia Day Competition to celebrate our 40 th Birthday in 2016 was postponed. Lake Pedder Anglers Club invite all anglers to our rescheduled Australia Day Fishing Competition to be held at Easter. This year the prize pool for the Australia Day competition has been valued at over $45,000 and we would like to thank our generous sponsors for their support once again. All competitors will be placed in a draw to win a boat package valued at $28 000, you do not have to catch a fish to win this, but you must be present at the draw on Monday 28 th March This year if you buy a raffle ticket, you will have the chance to win a second boat also drawn at the end of the competition. Due to the Bushfire, the club has received special permission from gaming Tasmania to sell the remaining tickets and draw the raffle on Easter Monday. The winner will be notified and does not have to be present to win the raffle boat. This is a family orientated competition with activities for children throughout the event. Join us for some serious fishing followed by evenings filled with laughter and stories around the bar. If your new to Lake Pedder, please read our safety brief on page 9 as in rough weather this lake can be very dangerous. The club operates a VHF radio base for the duration of the competition and the first aid station is at the Pedder Wilderness Lodge. If you re new to trout fishing, come along, our members are very supportive and will be very happy to give you some tips on the finer art of trout fishing. At the registration desk the club has lures for sale that have been selected by members as suitable for fishing at Lake Pedder. Competitors are encouraged to keep all trout caught for weigh in (above the minimum size of 22 cm) as Lake Pedder has an overabundance of trout. There is a daily bag limit of 20 fish per angler. All anglers over 14 years must hold a valid trout fishing license from Inland Fisheries Tasmania (see There is no bait fishing allowed in Lake Pedder, but fishing methods of trolling, spinning, soft plastics and fly fishing all are very successful on the Lake. On Saturday 26 th March the club will hold a charity fund raising auction at Pedder Wilderness Lodge. Funds raised assist us to offer a fishing experience for charities at our pond near Ouse. Members and sponsors are very welcome to attend the Ouse events. We look forward to sharing Easter and this special part of Tasmania with you. 6 Boat Launching Lake Pedder North: Strathgordon Bay. Has a sealed ramp and small jetty. Exposed to southerly weather After launching your boat, please park your vehicle and trailer well away from the waters edge to enable easy access to the ramp for others. Due to limited space and large numbers of competitors using the Strathgordon boat ramp (pictured above), no boats will be allowed to tie up at either of the two jetties for purposes other than while launching or retrieving. The club has a jetty below the chalet which is beside the main launching ramp jetty. Members are requested to use this jetty only for dropping off and pick ups during the competition days. Teds Beach. White quartz gravel base, deepest at northern end of beach and sheltered from most winds Note: Camping is allowed here - Parks and Wildlife charge camping fees
7 Serpentine Dam. Sealed ramp, very deep no jetty exposed to southerly/south/westerly weather Mc Partlan Canal. Sealed ramp, shallow no jetty exposed to westerly weather. Lake Pedder South: Scotts Peak, sealed ramp exposed to northerly weather 7
8 Edgar Dam. Both sealed ramps exposed to north/westerly weather
9 Competition Safety Brief At all times competitors are required to adhere to Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST) boating regulations and Marine VHF Radio operators Handbook. (see info Australian Maritime College) Navigational Beacon A large yellow buoy with flashing white light has been positioned in the centre of the lake, approximate position is 1km east of Wilmot island. This beacon will assist navigation from the southern end of the lake back to Strathgordon. From this beacons location, the Teds beach island flashing light can be seen. At Strathgordon ramp approximately 150m off shore, port and starboard beacons have been installed. These beacons will give navigational guidance to the boat ramp Known hazards are marked with a white foam buoy around the lake, please give these locations a wide berth. The lake has many hidden obstacles submerged under water and if you are unfamiliar with this lake, please use extreme caution if using high speed. Members have hit quartz rock in the middle of large bays. Remember to give a wide berth when travelling past boats that are fishing and to obey MAST rules at all times when on the lake. Competition Marine Radio Frequencies LPAC will monitor and use the marine VHF radio frequency for all on water communications during the competition. A club base station is located in the chalet plus all committee members boats are fitted with a VHF marine radio. If you hear someone calling for help please answer them using your boat radio as they may not be reaching the Lodge base station or other boats due to their location. It is important to relay the details of the assistance required to the committee who will control the emergency or assistance required. All distress, urgency and safety calls to be acknowledged and relayed if required on channel VHF It is a good idea to set your radio to scan both calling and working frequencies eg, VHF with 77 as the club event chatter channel. Coverage of the VHF frequency is from the Lodge to approximately Crumbledown island (SEE MAP on last page) or halfway down the lake. Lake Pedder is very mountainous it restricts radio frequency to line of sight so remember to move to another location until you are heard. 9
10 Weather Conditions All anglers please be aware that like all highland lakes, weather conditions on Lake Pedder can change dramatically in a very short time. It can be very dangerous if you are caught out in open water. Please observe all weather warnings and let someone know where you intend to fish and what time you are expected in. Any extreme weather changes that the LPAC becomes aware of will be broadcast using the marine VHF radio frequency. Note: Tas Coast Radio will broadcast any weather changes using channel but be aware that you may not be able to hear them due to your location on the lake. If you think that someone didn t hear a warning let them know before departing the area. If you get caught in a strong wind squall head for shelter and wait until it passes. It is normal weather for Lake Pedder to have four seasons in one day. Your day can go from this above to the weather below in very short time

22 LPAC Charity Work For years the club has raised funds and supported various charities. Initially starting with canteen and later moving to Camp Quality who the club supported with a fishing experience and donations of money raised at the January Competition Saturday night auction for many years. As the club evolved so has our charity work. In 2012 the club commenced setting up a pond on a farm near Ouse, the aim was to provide a fishing experience for more people from Camp Quality and also take on a second charity Able Australia. A farm dam was stocked by Petuna for use by the club for charity events. The idea was the brain child of one of our members Steve Foster. Steve was fighting his own battle with cancer at the time but his focus on the pond and the fish donated by Petuna never waned. Steve passed away shortly after attending the January competition in The Steve Foster Memorial has been established by Steve s friend Mick Pearce. At the competition each Australia Day, the Steve Foster Memorial is awarded in Steve s memory to a child under 14 years as a secret weight award. Petuna Seafoods came on board in 2013 and have stocked the pond with rainbow trout. Steve worked at Skretting who continue to sponsor the club pond events. In 2015 the club hosted both Able Australia and Camp Quality to fish the pond. Able Australia care for many disabled and underprivileged members of our local community and it was great to see the smiles and happiness when they were able to catch one of our large fish. It was a similar experience for the Camp Quality day in April where families were able to have fun together fishing at the pond. A small competition is held for the camp quality children and a trophy is awarded in memory of Ian Wigston to the camp quality child that catches the largest fish. In September 2014 Telstra granted the club funds to purchase a Marquee for use at the club pond. Members and sponsors are welcome to attend these fishing days and join in the fun. A free BBQ is provided and to assist the club to preserve fish stock a few rules have been put in place at the pond. 1. One fish per child/disabled person only to be taken home or one fish per family 2. Fishing is only to be conducted at the allocated times 10 am 2 pm 3. Pond is not allowed to be fished prior to or after the charity event. It is purely set up for charity fishing days. 4. Rods are not to be left unattended at pond side and all children must be supervised by their parents. Our thanks to Vicki Jones, Petuna, Skretting, IGA Ouse, Telstra Foundation and the Wigston Family for their continued support
