For current Year 12 students this means that, provided you have met the prerequisites of your chosen program of study, your achieved ATAR is not a factor in our decision to offer a place; therefore, your study scores will indicate your eligibility for a place when you receive your school results in December and you will receive a provisional offer before Christmas if you meet the prerequisites. Nikita Hall Bachelor of Nursing Studying at Federation University has been the best decision I have made. I am currently studying Nursing, and I absolutely love it. I have learnt so many valuable new skills, whilst learning with so many like-minded people. I was surprised and really pleased to find the transition from year 12 to university so easy. There is so much support within the university from student services and academic staff to ensure you achieve only your best. The best thing about studying at Federation University is staying so close to home, and being able to utilise my skills within my community. In my career I would love to pursue oncology nursing, and with Federation s Bachelor of Nursing I am one step closer to achieving my dream. 19 Rochelle Thunder and Sarah Gladman Graduate Diploma of Midwifery Rachael Newitt Bachelor of Nursing Rochelle I have always wanted to work with women and babies and always had an interest in women s health. I had been working as a nurse for 4 years and had always wanted to become a midwife, this feeling of wanting more from my career pushed me to go back to uni. My favourite part of the program was the follow-through aspect where we followed families from early pregnancy through to parenthood. I was lucky enough to be placed at Ballarat Health Services for my clinical placement; I rotated through the antenatal clinic, antenatal ward, labour ward, postnatal ward, special care nursery and domiciliary care. I am now a registered nurse and midwife at Ballarat Health Services, working in the orthopaedic and maternity wards. I really enjoy working in maternity and the interaction with new and soon to be families, being involved in labour and birth is amazing, there is nothing like it. My study at FedUni prepared me for many aspects of my career. It is definitely a challenging course but it is absolutely worth it in the end. Be organised and surround yourself with supportive people, you won t regret it. Sarah I have always had a passion for helping women and children. Throughout high school I enjoyed studying health and human development and physical education. The body is an amazing thing and even more so throughout pregnancy. I absolutely loved being on placement and the hands on experience, I definitely learnt so much more. The breastfeeding unit was amazing and the lecturers were so knowledgeable. I am fully qualified as a midwife and nurse, I gained a position at Ballarat Health Services after completing my placement there, and I love working there. I also own my own business, Ballarat Pregnancy and Infant Massage, which I have been doing for 8 years. Both midwifery and massage work so well together. I love being able to help women, before, during and after pregnancy, and then follow on educating them on infant massage. This has been my dream and I have finally achieved it! My advice to students is to study away from uni, ask questions while on placement; but importantly have fun and enjoy, it s an amazing career! My dream career was to help people in need. After speaking to current students at Open Day and researching, I decided nursing was the career for me. I always thought that I would enjoy being a nurse because it s a career that is hands-on and involves people and communication skills which I felt I was good at. I have always had a strong connection with children and endeavoured to become a paediatric nurse, which I have succeeded in! The highlight of my degree was the clinical placements. They were always an exciting experience because I was able to put my theory into practice and Ballarat offered an extended number of weeks of placement. Clinical placement was a fantastic way to develop confidence in communication and better understand nursing processes, which helped with my graduate year. I completed the Graduate Nursing Program at the Royal Children s Hospital and I am currently employed here. I completed my graduate nurse year on the Platypus ward, which includes orthopaedics, urology, plastics, burns and trauma courses. I then obtained a scholarship to complete my Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatrics, through the University of Melbourne and the Royal Children s Hospital. I loved studying at Ballarat due to the unique, friendly and personal approach to learning. The teaching staff are readily available to provide advice and support, and help to expand your knowledge in the nursing environment. I encourage future students to put your mind to something and work hard. Everyone has the ability to succeed and reach any goal they set. VISIT federation.edu.au/programfinder 17
