Since its foundation in 1845 Queen s University Belfast has had a long and distinguished tradition of research and education. This research led ethos is reflected in the School by its involvement in a number of major research centres. These include the Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT), the Virtual Engineering Centre, the Northern Ireland Semiconductor Research Centre and the International Centre for Systemon-Chip and Microwireless Integration. Electronic and Electrical Engineering has consistently been one of the UK s top research departments, achieving the top grade in the last two research assessment exercises, as well as achieving excellence in recent assessments of our Teaching Quality. In addition, the School is consistently in the top five of the Guardian and Times League Tables. In this brochure you will find information on two of our MSc programmes: Telecommunications and Electronics. Each course is designed to

4 Studying at Queen s Belfast City Belfast is one of the most dynamic small cities in Europe. The place is full of youthful, optimistic energy and you will soon relish the good-humoured craic and cosmopolitan lifestyle for which Belfast is renowned. In recent years the city has been transformed by worldclass developments in places like Laganside, Cathedral Quarter and in the city centre. Scholarships The School has developed a scholarship and fee-reduction package available to international students applying for the MSc course. As an international student you will receive a fee reduction worth 1,500 when you enrol on the course. In addition, all students who graduate from the course with Distinction will be offered the opportunity to pursue a Doctoral programme of research working with some of our leading academics and researchers. As part of our commitment to supporting the best students undertaking research, the School will fully fund a three year PhD studentship for the top student graduating from one of our Masters programmes. 5 Belfast is one of today s most fashionable places to visit and live Student Support The University has a comprehensive Student Support Service, this includes, the University Health Service, student counsellors and a careers service. In addition, staff in the International Office have special responsibility for looking after the needs of international students and helping them adjust to a different country and way of life. Every effort is made to ensure that our students are happy at the University and this is reflected by the majority of our graduates who speak fondly of their time at Queen s. Accommodation A range of University residential accommodation is available, with catered Halls, en-suite self-catered Halls, and self-catered Halls and Houses. Accommodation is generally within 10 minutes walk and in comparison with other Universities the cost of similar quality accommodation is at the lower end of the scale. Privately rented accommodation is also available and advice on this can be provided by the Student Accommodation Office.

6 MSc in Telecommunications The postgraduate MSc in Telecommunications is intended as a specialised extension to the study of Telecommunications at undergraduate level. The course provides students with additional expertise in telecommunications systems, specifically high-speed transmission and switching networks, wireless communications and advanced hardware and software for the telecommunication industry. The course is normally full-time, starts at the end of September and lasts for 12 months. A Distinction is awarded to candidates who achieve a sufficiently high standard both in the examinations and in the project work. Course Modules Students are required to undertake a major engineering design project during the year and to study 6 full modules from those given below. The topics offered on the course are regularly reviewed and updated to provide adequate extended training, essential for modern applications in research or industry. In any given year new modules may be offered or some may not be available. Further details of the modules can be found on the MSc web site. Employment Prospects Our graduates have found that holding a prestigious MSc qualification from one of the UKs top engineering schools has significantly enhanced their job opportunities and employment prospects. With the revolutionary advances in technology and the ever growing global demand for high-tech products and services, graduates can find lucrative employment in industry as engineers and managers. Diploma in Telecommunications Entry to the Diploma in Telecommunications requires the minimum of a pass degree in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering, or equivalent. If Diploma candidates attain a sufficiently high standard in the examinations, permission may be granted to enrol for an MSc Degree, provided that they have taken the appropriate modules.
