Enrique Penalosa, Bogota Mobility is a peculiar problem: it can get worse as society gets richer. Clearly a non sustainable model The first mobility right: being able to walk without the risk of being killed What makes an advanced city are not highways and subways but quality sidewalks, buslanes & bikeways

Bogota: Bike highway in preparation of new town

The case of London 540,000 cycle trips now made in London per day 23% of Londoners cycled in the last year 173% increase in cycling on London s main roads between 2000/01 and 2011/12. 35% of households own a bicycle (8% increase over one year)

MAYORAL PLEDGE Make London more liveable for everyone by making our streets as safe and inviting for cycling as Holland Love London, Go Dutch Mayoral Election Campaign 2012

THE MAYOR S VISION FOR CYCLING IN LONDON

The Mayor: I want cycling to be normal...a part of everyday life. I want it to be something you feel comfortable doing in your ordinary clothes. I want more women cycling, more older people cycling, more black and minority ethnic Londoners cycling, more cyclists of all social backgrounds, I want more of the kind of cyclists you see in Holland, going at a leisurely pace

The Mayor: cycling will create better places for everyone. It means less traffic, more trees, more places to sit and eat a sandwich. It means new life, new vitality and lower crime on underused streets. It means more seats on the tube, less competition for a parking place and fewer cars in front of yours at the lights

The Mayor: Timid half-hearted is out Road space will be taken from cars and given over to bicycles. Timid half-hearted improvements are out. We will install Dutch-style full segregation on several streets. There will be mini-hollands: three outer boroughs will be chosen for very high spending concentrated in relatively small areas for the greatest possible impact. We will deliver a massive Dutch-style bike superhub at a mainline rail station, with space for thousands of bikes and very good cycle routes radiating from it.

Experiments and explorations There is also a need for further study. The city plan includes off-site trials of a Dutch style cycle roundabout with segregated lanes protecting cyclists, and other novel interventions. London will also study the experience of other cities to reduce the number of heavy vehicles in the city.
