1 Projects New Initiatives: 1) A s the Race 2) Facilitators@NUS Teambuilding Programme 3) NUS Freecycle 4) Project Gratitude 5) Project Inspire A buddy programme to focus of the mental/morale aspects of Indian JC students who are taking their A levels this year. This group is a mentormentee programme where each mentor (a NUS student) is accredited a NYC certificate after undergoing the mentoring course. This teambuilding programme is the first initiative in NUS to bring the members within individual NUS teams/committees together through an experiential learning process. This project is a freecycling (free recycling) project launched in NUS that aims to collect items from leaving exchange students and redistribute items to incoming students to University Town. Through this initiative, members of the NUS community can donate items that are still usable for incoming international students next semester. Project Gratitude aims to raise awareness on the need to provide a good work environment and other members of the NUS community. During this project care packages were given out to staff in NUS. Project Inspire identifies the benefit of presenting the stories of various renowned doctors from different perspectives to inspire future medical students. This project has provided a platform for renowned doctors to share their valuable experience with patients through the book Heartfelt. All the proceeds from the sale are donated to a school-based bursary - Christine Chong Hui Xian Bursary. Projects Arts & Culture (Gold): 1) ObservAsian First presented in the Philippines in July 2012 as a collaborative project, ObservAsian was restaged in UCC in September 2012 to over 1800 audience members. Projects Arts & Culture (Silver): 2) King Edward VII Chinese Drama Annual Drama Production AY12/13 Founded in 2001, the King Edward VII (KE) Hall Chinese Drama Group is a performing group managed by undergraduates in KE Hall. This annual performance put up by the group not only portrays human life in its artistic glory but also introduces Chinese culture to the nus community. Projects Arts & Culture (Bronze): 3) Murdered to Death King Edward VII Hall Play 4) Roulette The Musical by Raffles Hall Musical Production 5) 15 th Xin Qing Rong Ji Regional Song Writing Competition KEVII s production provided the NUS community with an entertaining show that have enhanced the NUS culture scene. The play, potrayed British culture in the early 1900s and gave the audience insight to literary works related to that era. A musical production which aims to create not only an outstanding performance, but also to build team bonding within hall. The production involved various different artistic groups coming together to conceive, plan and execute the signature Raffles Hall Musical Production. Into its 15th edition, XQRJ aims to promote culture and appreciation of Chinese original music. XQRJ collaborated with Bright Vision Hospital, the largest community hospital in Singapore, in organising a largerscaled charity event, Music without Boundary.
2 6) Mirror.Moon Integrating dance and poetry, Mirror.Moon attracted many NUS students who were keen in dance and Chinese literature. They were also able to gain a deeper insight into Chinese Dance as an art form and also to rich Chinese history and culture. The production attracted many dance enthusiasts and reached out to audiences beyond the NUS community. Projects Community Service (Gold): 7) Children of Cambodia 8) NUS CSC: CSC Day IX 9) NUS Tamil Language Society Saadhana A Level Tuition Project ) Operation Orion 2012 In partnership with several hospitals, the team opened Cambodia s first dedicated neonatal ward at Angkor Hospital for Children in September They have been working on this project for the last 10 years, developing various aspects of Cambodian healthcare. CSC Day IX is an annual 1-day carnival organised by NUS CSC for all its beneficiaries & volunteers to come together for a day of fun through games & skit. The aims are to bond NUS CSC together, raise awareness of beneficiaries, and to spread volunteerism. Saadhana A Level tuition project is an annual project that is organized and run by NUS Tamil Language society. Conducted for Indian tertiary students (JC/Pre-U), this project has been running for 29 years since it conception in Operation Orion is an annual expedition which emphasizes the application of the students' engineering skills and knowledge to contribute to needy communities in regional countries close to Singapore. Projects Community Service (Silver): 11) ALIVE! ) Eusoff Expedition 13) Project F.L.Y (Fun-Loving Youths) 14) Project Sabai 15) Waves of Hope Swimathon 2012 ALIVE! (Appreciating Lives, Initiating Volunteerism, Everyday!) is a 2 day event, catered to empowering volunteers and appreciating the lives of the beneficiaries. Eusoff Expeditions went to Prey Veng, Cambodia to provide help at the Maha Bodhi School to facilitate a cultural exchange between students at Maha Bodhi School and the Cambodian community where the Team operates. This project was created to raise funds for the KK Hospital Health Endowment Fund which supports children with terminal illnesses from low-income families and for research involving terminal conditions such as Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. The team, comprising of students from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine travelled to Cambodia to educate villagers and children about basic health education. The outreach for this project has expanded to include 2 village clinics and education classes, on top of the annual health screenings conducted. This project aims to provide children from mainstream schools the chance to help other underprivileged children amongst them through swimming. The project raised nearly $21,000 for the Singapore Children Society and Children Cancer Foundation.
3 Projects Community Service (Bronze): 16) Big Hands Bigger Hearts 8 17) Code for a Cause 18) LBSA Client Management System Big Hands Bigger Hearts 8, also known as BHBH, is a Youth Expedition Project conducted in Bago City, Philippines. The team focused on improving the learning facilities for students in Bago City while promoting the idea of an entrepreneurial spirit alongside self-empowerment. A community coding team involving students from the School of Computing that takes up coding projects for a social cause. The team provided technical assistance to non-governmental organisation and non-profit organisations to build systems and software. Each year, Computing for Voluntary Welfare Organisations (CVWO) will have summer projects with Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWO) to build IT systems. This project worked directly with a local Voluntary Welfare Organisation, Lions Befriender Service Association (LBSA). 19) Love Beyond Boundaries 2 20) NUS CSC: Painta-Home XIV Again from KEVII Hall, Love Beyond Boundaries 2 was carried out in Laos. Living by the motto of Improving one school at a time in Laos, this OCIP group conducted a revamp of the Nong Seng Chan Primary school in Vientiane Laos. A collaborative project between the NUS Community Service Club and the NUS Students Union, Paint-a-Home XIV improved the living environment of beneficiaries by giving their homes a fresh coat of paint. The project involved benefited 73 student beneficiaries & over 100 elderly beneficiaries. 21) Project Cebu 22) Project COOK (Cambodia Overseas Outreach, KEVII Hall) 23) Project PACman 24) Project SMILE 25) Sumba OEP 2013 Project Cebu provided educational opportunities to students (aged 7 to 18) from financially poor backgrounds. Activities ranging from inclassroom sessions to outdoors were planned and students were exposed to the different cultures in Singapore. A project into its 6 th year running, Project COOK saw new partnerships with Rainbow Bridge Orphanage for HIV orphans and LOVE CAMBODIA, with which the team worked with to improve sanitation standards at Kampung Sleang in the Prey Veng province. Project PACMan, is an event by students from the Kent Ridge Hall, helped low-income families and senior citizens with limited mobility do their spring-cleaning and give their homes a fresh coat of paint. In another overseas community involvement project, 21 residents from Temasek Hall went to Vietnam to collaborate with the Hue College of Economics to provide and improve the educational level of underprivileged children. This overseas community involvement project brought architectural students to Waingapu Orphanage in the Sumba Island in Indonesia. There, the team embarked on a community service work focusing on alleviating hygiene issues as well as conducting evaluations on past projects.
4 Competitions (Gold): 26) Chrome Consulting (Copenhagen Business School Case Competition) 27) Law Zhe Wen Faculty of Engineering, Year 3 Competitions (Silver): 28) Lim Hon Lee Jeremy 29) Team Aurora (L Oreal Brandsotrm 2013 International Finals) Third-year BBA students Jerome Tan, Chan Yi, Keith Wong, Matthew Reuben Yeo won the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) Case Competition 2013, making it the third time NUS Business School has emerged victorious in the event. No other school has won the competition more than once. Law Zhe Wen was one out of 11 delegate award recipients in The Princeton Interactive Crisis Simulation (PICSim). Organized by Princeton University, each participant immerses him or herself with a role to engage in international relations to address challenges that various countries face. Jeremy Lim took home the top prize in the Japanese Speech Contest jointly organized by the Embassy of Japan, the Japanese Cultural Society Singapore, the Japanese Association Singapore, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Japanese University Graduates Association of Singapore. Third-year BBA students Fang Xiuxian, Zaneta Tan and Yeo Yin Hong emerged champions in the L'Oreal Brandstorm 2013 National Finals, beating 57 teams from Singapore's universities and earning themselves a trip to Paris, to represent Singapore in the International Finals. 30) Team KKS (Frost & Sullivan Case Challenge 2013) 31) The Stakeholders (Singapore Public Service Policy Challenge) 32) THreshold (GET OUT 2012) Undergraduates Siswanto Tang, Koh Kian Sin and Sean Tan clinched the top spot in Frost & Sullivan Case Challenge 2013, beating 120 teams from Singapore's universities. The Stakeholders came in champions out of 60 teams in the Singapore Public Service Policy Challenge (PPC) held by the Public Service Commission (PSC). THreshold is Temasek Hall's proud band team that won the GET OUT 2012 band competition, beating over 57 other contestants. Competitions (Bronze): 33) Hon Sui Ming Raymond School of Design & Environment, 34) KR Steppers (Institute of Higher Learning Cheerleading Championships 2013 Raymond came in first place in Bench: Remembering National Stadium competition. Jointly organized by FARM (a creative company), The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and Singapore Furniture Industry Council (SFIC), this is a design competition that enables everyone to remember the former National Stadium in a special way. KR Steppers emerged champions in the annual Institute for Higher Learning Cheerleading Competition (IHLCC 2013), placing 1 st out of 20 teams in this national competition.
5 35) NUS Symphony Orchestra (Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival 2013) 36) David Wong De- Wei 37) Team Springboards (Young CSR Leaders Award 2013) The NUS Symphony Orchestra took part in the Symphony Orchestra category and took 2 nd place. This competition was held in Austria at the Golden Hall of the Musikverein where 30 ensembles from 18 countries were judged by a selection of top international music professionals. The Singapore delegate for WorldMUN clinched the Diplomacy Award for the first time in the history of NUS s participation. Team Springboards clinching of this award impressed Matex International with their CSR plans, the former of which will be executing the CSR recommendations in the company. Leadership (Gold): 38) Wynne Ng Say Lay School of Business, Alumni 39) Yeo Su Jian Darren Faculty of Science, Year 3 A recent graduate from the NUS School of Business, Wynne served as the President of the NUS Community Service Club and during her term of office she helped to drive the successful first-ever NUS Volunteer Network sharing session. In addition, she has represented NUS at a Service Learning Forum in Taiwan in 2012 and was also invited as a forum moderator for another inaugural event, the NUS Volunteer Symposium. As the Project Director of Project C.A.N X, Darren was dedicated in trying to provide the best for the beneficiaries in terms of food donations, provision of basic necessities as well as basic chores. As the Assistant Project Director for Signature Love Project X, he was passionate in breaking down the societal stigmas of HIV/AIDS and raised awareness amongst the NUS population for people living with HIV/AIDS. Leadership (Silver): 40) David Wong De- Wei 41) Jarrod Sim Cheng Jie Faculty of Engineering, Year 3 A person who wears many hats, David keeps busy by involving himself in many extra-curricular activities. For example, he organised the Education Without Borders Conference in the UAE as part of the prestigious World Student Organizing Committee, an event which saw 600 participants from all over the globe. He also clinched the Diplomacy Award at the Harvard World Model United Nations Conference, NUS s second ever award. Jarrod was the Project Director of Eusoff Hall s Eusoff Voluntary Corps. Jarrod believes in leading by example and makes sure that he is always there in the thick of things with his fellow committee members. In the Eusoff Voluntary Corps, he led the team to organise various projects to benefit several different beneficiaries. 42) Luk Po Ling Pauline Together with a group of friends, Pauline started Project Freecycle, a free-recycling project to get international students leaving at the end of
6 Post graduate 43) Muhamad Zulhakim Bin Aman Faculty of Science, the academic year to donate their items to new needy students. Under her charge, 300 students consisting of students at all levels participated in this project. As the pioneer President of the College Student Committee in the College of Alice and Peter Tan, Zulhakim had his work cut out for him. Together with his committee, they established common goals and Zulhakim empowered his members to lead their sub-committees, thereby making them feel that they play an integral part of the committee and giving them a sense of ownership. Leadership (Bronze): 44) Lee Ming Yong School of Business, Year 3 45) Loh Ying Ting Year 3 Ming Yong, who currently serves as the President of the NUSSU Volunteer Action Committee (NVAC) was also the Project Director for Charity Fiesta, an annual project by NVAC in In his role, he made it a point to lead by example and played an active role in the planning of this project. As the President of Facilitators@NUS, Ying Ting has put in much time and effort to expand the group and to seek out collaborations with other student organisations. She integrated the international students with local students through care and encouragements which transcended nationalities and encouraged all to do the same.
