We are passionate about helping all young people to achieve their full potential by delivering high quality PE and sport. We have driven many improvements in school sport and are continuously looking at new ways to inspire young people to participate, compete, volunteer and officiate. Our belief is that every young person s life can be transformed by PE and sport whatever their age or ability. We work tirelessly to create innovative solutions to overcome the barriers that prevent young people from taking part in sport, and apply these in schools and communities across the UK. 3 4 Youth Sport Trust: sport changes lives. To find out more, visit: 5 Sporting Start We work to give every child a sporting start in life through high quality PE and sport in primary schools. Providing primary children with a solid foundation in physical activity is crucial to help shape them into healthy, social and active young people for the rest of their lives. Supporting primary practitioners and providing them with the best teaching strategies is key to creating a dynamic and enjoyable PE experience for younger pupils. We have developed a range of programmes to build the knowledge, skills and confidence of teaching staff to help them deliver engaging PE and school sport. Primary practitioners can access a range of revolutionary teaching methods for Key Stage 1 PE through our Start to Move: delivering physical literacy initiative, delivered in partnership with Bupa. Additionally, we run a national training programme to support the teaching of Key Stage 2 pupils Matalan TOP Sport. The Youth Sport Trust has developed a network of 7,500 Change4Life Sports Clubs, which are designed to increase physical activity levels in less active children, focusing on Olympic and Paralympic sports. It s important to make physical activity a habit from the start if we re to reduce the likelihood of chronic disease in later life. For pupils in Years 5 and 6, we are offering cycling proficiency courses through the Bikeability programme. The course is designed to give youngsters the skills and confidence to ride especially on roads and aims to sustain participation in cycling activity in England. Over 3, primary schools have been trained in delivering Matalan TOP Sport and a further 3,500 schools will be trained during There have been grumblings at school regarding the dryness and rigidity of our current schemes of work. To find out more, visit: 7 Sporting Chance We work to ensure all young people have a sporting chance by developing opportunities for those with special educational needs and disabilities. We create innovative and exciting ways to engage and inspire all young people. On the ground we work with a range of people who positively influence a young disabled person s experience of PE and school sport, namely teaching practitioners, coaches and volunteers. The School Games has a significant focus on increasing sporting opportunities for young people with disabilities by offering them more opportunities to compete alongside their peers and non-disabled young people. Read more about this on p Through our national network of 50 Project Ability schools, we deliver the strand of work within the School Games which has been designed to help increase competitive sport opportunities for young disabled people. Our annual Step into Sport Camp is a residential event that involves a mixture of non-disabled and disabled young people. It provides an opportunity for the youngsters to develop their skills and become leaders in a variety of roles in mainstream and inclusive sports. The Youth Sport Trust Membership scheme (p.13) also provides opportunities for practitioners to be at the cutting-edge of work with young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Over 6, young disabled people participated in multi-sport disability clubs during I want to do all the boccia courses there are and be the very best referee or coach at the Paralympics. I want to do sports as my main thing when I m a bit older. In the future watch out for me! I m always determined, I will never give up. To find out more, visit: 9 Sporting Best We work to support all secondary school-aged young people to achieve their sporting best in school and their personal best in life. We engage with teaching and school sport professionals, young leaders, coaches, volunteers and National Governing Bodies of Sport to deliver programmes, conferences and events that help young people to be the best they can be. Initiatives delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, such as the School Games, focus on helping more young people take part in sport while positively impacting on their wider learning and life skills. Our Sky Sports Living for Sport programme is aimed at helping disengaged young people discover personal skills, confidence and to achieve more through sport. Meanwhile, young people who are not motivated by more traditional sports have the opportunity to try out alternative sports through our Matalan your Activity programme. We have also developed a network of 7,500 Change4Life Sports Clubs so that less active youngsters can take part in a range of Olympic and Paralympic sports helping them adopt healthly lifestyles. Our Young Ambassadors (supported by adidas) and Young Leaders programmes aim to empower young people to inspire their peers and to develop their leadership abilities. We also strive to develop the next generation of volunteers in sport through growing the skills, confidence and competence of young people and members of the school workforce. Lloyds TSB and Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week builds on the magic of the Olympic and Paralympic game in a week-long celebration of school sport. In 2011, four million young people took part. Over 14, young people will participate in Sky Sports Living for Sport project in I love being a Young Ambassador it has given me so many opportunities. My confidence has grown, I have learnt employability skills that will help me at university and in the world of work and my outlook on life is brighter than ever. 6 10 Youth Sport Trust: sport changes lives. To find out more, visit: 11 The School Games The Sainsbury s 2012 School Games is a multi-sport event for the best school-aged elite athletes in the UK. In 2012 the Youth Sport Trust was commissioned by Sport England to deliver the event, which saw 1,600 young people competing across 12 sports, six of which include disability competition. For this, its inaugural year, the Olympic Stadium, Velodrome, Aquatics Centre and ExCel Centre in London hosted the event, giving the young people involved a true taste of competition at the highest level. The finals event is just one element of the wider year-round School Games initiative, which is being funded by National Lottery and Government investment. More than 13,000 schools have signed up to take part in local class versus class and school versus school competitions along with county-wide sports festivals in England. The School Games are designed to build on the magic of London 2012 to enable every school and child to participate in competitive sport, including meaningful opportunities for disabled youngsters. The Youth Sport Trust is proud to have been commissioned by Sport England to also deliver the School Games initiative within schools. School Games in numbers: 450 School Games Organisers 46 Local Organising Committees 64 County multi-sport festivals 112,000 Young athletes 15,000 Young volunteers 450 School Games Organisers and 46 Local Organising Committees are in place to run the School Games locally, with 64 county multi-sport festivals taking place in the summer of 2012, which will include 112,000 young athletes and 15,000 young volunteers. The School Games provides schools with the chance to maximise competition in their school and community and helps all young people to take part in and enjoy a variety of competitive sport. To find out more, visit: 13 International reach Our school sport network The Youth Sport Trust uses the power of sport to impact on young people s lives throughout the world. We foster international relationships to enhance and extend the quality and breadth of our development work in PE and sport: creating international opportunities for young people and seeking best practice to transform school sport. Recently we have developed and delivered leadership and teacher training in Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia and Pakistan our aim is to embed sustainable change in these countries to leave a lasting legacy. We are also the delivery partner for the International Inspiration programme, which is linked with London The vision for International Inspiration is to enrich the lives of 12 million children in schools and communities in 20 countries through the power of high-quality PE, sport and play other key partners include Unicef, UK Sport and the British Council. 45 countries and five continents We have worked with young people in over 45 countries across all five continents. Our international work is fully aligned with the Youth Sport Trust s fundamental belief that sport changes lives. Our mission is to bring about long-term, sustainable, change and have a real impact on young people around the world. We are building on our collaborative work with National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) and have created a progressive Sport Partner Framework. This Framework helps NGBs to improve upon their school sport offer and in turn, assists the Youth Sport Trust to promote sport even more widely to schools. NGBs review their school and youth sport provision, assessing the school sport element against a benchmark developed by the Youth Sport Trust. The relationship then sees the Youth Sport Trust offer a range of bespoke development support, projects and programmes to NGBs based on their individual needs. NGBs that commit to the self-review process and develop a school sport offer will formally become a Youth Sport Trust Sport Partner, accessing a range of commercial benefits and promotional opportunities.
