CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to prepare the dental assistant in the prevention of disease transmission in the work environment. Emphasis is placed on knowledge of the infectious disease process, use of barriers, sterilization, disinfection, OSHA requirements, and the concept of universal precautions. One and one-half hours lecture per week. CLASS SCHEDULE COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to prepare the dental assistant in all aspects of preventing disease transmission in the work environment. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. identify the Occupational Safety and Health standards that pertain to the dental profession 2. identify the Infection Control Regulations stated by the Dental Board of California 3. identify and describe the treatment and prevention of the various
2 DENT 122 Infection Control in the Dental Office Page 2 infectious diseases that could be contracted in a dental office REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS Modern Dental Assisting, Bird/Robinson, 2002 Course Lecture Guide The reading for this course is: PRIMARILY COLLEGE LEVEL REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS OUTSIDE OF CLASS Over an 18 week presentation of the course three hours per week are required for each unit of credit. Two hours of independent work done out of class are required for each hour of lecture. Students will be required to complete the following types of assignments outside of the regular class time: Study Answer questions based on text and lecture course content Practice skills in campus clinical/lab situations Read required materials Observe activities related to course content in an office observation assignment DEGREE APPLICABLE COURSE: 2 hours of independent work done out of class per each hour of lecture or class work, or 3 hours lab, practicum, or the equivalent, per unit. If "essay" is not checked, it must be explained why essays are an inappropriate basis for at least part of the grade in the course. ESSAY OR SUBSTANTIAL WRITING ASSIGNMENT Includes not only "blue book" examinations but any written assignment of sufficient length and complexity to require students to select and organize ideas as well as to explain them.
