2 FEATURE PRESENTERS CONFERENCE SCHEDULE, M.A., is a Mindful Movement Specialist winning multiple industry-recognized awards, currently serving as the Senior VIP Consultant for Power Music. He is part of the BOSU Development Team, a Registered Yoga Alliance Teacher, and Contributing Author to industry magazines like AFAA s American Fitness. Find Lawrence at Helen Vanderburg, BPE is the owner of Heavens Elevated Fitness Club, Fusion Fitness Training, an international health and fitness consultant and is a respected motivational speaker. Helen is the 2005 IDEA Fitness Instructor of the Year, 2013/2006/1996 CanFitPro Presenter of the Year, 1996 IDEA Program Director of the Year, the 2001 Canadian National Fitness Leadership recipient. Helen brings a wealth of experience to her presentations., MS, Exercise Physiologist, is the Director of Programming for both BOSU and RealRRRyder Indoor Cycling. The ex-ironman triathlete is currently the Director of Athlete Conditioning for Sugar Bowl Ski Academy where he works with elite junior and professional athletes. Douglas was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame and has been honored by Can-Fit-Pro as the International Presenter of the Year. Coach Brooks is the author of numerous books and cross trains according to the seasons., BPHE, BSC(PT) is an Orthopaedic Physical Therapist with 30 years of experience including serving as a Physical Therapist with Canada s Men s Olympic Hockey Team and the Calgary Flames. In addition to his clinical work, Terry has presented internationally on post rehabilitative exercise for twenty years at the American College of Sports Medicine, Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine, CanFitPro, IDEA as well as for the University of Calgary Department of Orthopaedics and Continuing Medical Education. Tony Webster teaches for the Centre for Sport and Exercise Education at Camosun College specializing in exercise physiology and training for performance. Tony is NSCA-CSCS certified and holds an undergraduate and Masters degree from the University of Bristol (UK) and a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta. Tony s main passion is learning about movement, strength and conditioning for optimal health, function and longevity. Carmen Bott holds a bachelor s degree in Human Kinetics and a Master s degree in Exercise Physiology. She is the Provincial Director for the National Strength & Conditioning Association (N.S.C.A.) and holds several NCCP certifications. Carmen is on faculty at Langara College and instructs sessionally at the University of British Columbia in the Kinesiology Department. Carmen is the founder of Human Motion Inc. Trent Stellingwerff is an applied sport physiologist, specializing in the area of performance nutrition. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at Cornell University and he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Guelph in Exercise and Skeletal Muscle Physiology. Trent works with Canada s national rowing, track and field and triathlon teams, as well as leading Canadian Sport Institute s Innovation and Research division. Dana is Strength and Conditioning coach with the Pacific Institute of Sports Excellence and Canadian Sport Center Pacific. Dana is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan (H.B.Sc.Sports and Exercise Science) and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP). In addition, Dana is a certified NCCP track and field coach. Combustion combines steady state cardiovascular training with simple to follow choreographed hi/low moves, high intensity explosive movement and based full body strength exercises. Active Session Lecture Release, Relieve, Restore Through the effective use of self-myofascial release techniques, yoga inspired stretching and restorative exercises this workshop will provide a simple and highly effective method to increase range of motion, decrease tension and restore the body. Learn easy to use exercise sequences for releasing, relieving and restoring the most common areas of discomfort in the body. Functional Program Design What makes a program functional? My approach is simple, yet complex, and hugely effective. It is based on a foundation of CARBSS = P, multi planar movement, and lines of resistance in all planes of movement the science. The science is followed by how the programming is created and delivered. Themed workouts, daily workout design, social interaction, safety and inspiration are mixed into the recipe. Each workout is structured, but flexible to individual needs of the day whether you are training a small group or one on one. Benefits are maximized in a time efficient training formula that drives motivation and inspiration. Reps, Sets and Loads: A New Look at Strength Training This fast paced presentation uncovers the latest information on how to manipulate reps, sets and loads to maximize your client s strength training programs. Understand metabolic training s impact on hypertrophy. You might be surprised! We ll discuss the strength recipes for training power, hypertrophy, absolute strength, muscular endurance, performance, and learn when not to train to failure. Direct, control and optimize your clients /athletes strength training results regardless of what training format you use. Injury Prevention in Yoga & Pilates Despite the tremendous benefits of Yoga and Pilates, neither is without its risks of injury. In this session, will discuss common injuries in Yoga and Pilates as well as prevention strategies that instructors can use to reduce the incidence of injury. Exercise and Arthritis Arthritis and associated issues represent the leading cause of reduced functional capacity, activity and independence in the largest age group in North America. On the other hand, safe and appropriate exercise represents the most effective non-surgical treatment for arthritis. In this session, describes the latest research and exercise strategies to reduce the impact of arthritis. Oh My Aching Joints Unlike muscle injuries which heal rapidly, joint injuries require more time to heal and inappropriate exercises can result in permanent disability. In this session describes the most common shoulder, spine, hip and knee injuries, how they are managed medically and the role of safe and appropriate exercises for each. Tony Webster Flexibility and Mobility Training What Should We Tell Our Clients The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in flexibility and joint mobility training tools and techniques. Most would agree that flexibility and joint mobility are critical components of health related fitness but unfortunately physical activity guidelines are still vague about how best to develop them. Research findings, controversies and current opinions in this field will be discussed. Carmen Bott Uncovering Limiters in Work Capacity and Methods to Solve Them 10:30 AM-12:00 PM An applied discussion of client assessment and energy system prescription. Knowing an athlete s VO2 max really doesn t tell you anything about what is limiting their performance. There are some simple ways to uncover limitations in oxygen intake, oxygen transport and oxygen utilization in our clients so we can better serve their physiological needs. Carmen will discuss assessments as well as give solutions to improve physiological function in all three areas. Strength & Conditioning Protocols for Field Based Athletes 1:00-2:30 PM Dana will uncover several methods for improving performance for field athletics athletes. Dr. Trent Stellingwerff Nutrition Interventions to Maximize Hypertrophy 3:00-4:30 PM The interactions between exercise physiology/ training and nutrition are more intimately linked than most realize. Certainly, the exercise stimulus is essential to drive adaptations, such as muscle growth, but the proper nutritional substrates can optimize this response. This presentation will highlight these key elements, including key macronutrients required (e.g. protein), the type, timing and amount required to maximize adaptations to strength training.
