2 The laptp The security and use f the laptp is the student s respnsibility. The student must cmply with all directins we give in relatin t the use f the laptp and prduce the laptp fr inspectin whenever requested. This laptp is issued t the student fr their educatinal use but remains the prperty f Mark Oliphant Cllege and its supply t the student is cnditinal upn the student s cntinued enrlment at the Cllege. If the student ceases enrlment at Mark Oliphant Cllege, the laptp must be returned t the Cllege. On the date we specify by ntice t yu, r n the date the student ceases t be enrlled at Mark Oliphant Cllege, whichever is earlier, yu must return the laptp t Mark Oliphant Cllege in gd wrking rder and in gd repair cmplete with the AC pwer adaptr. Failure t return the laptp in its riginal cnditin will result in Mark Oliphant Cllege invicing the student r parents/carers fr the repair r replacement cst f the laptp. Mark Oliphant Cllege des nt give any warranty, representatin r assurance as t the quality, fitness fr purpse r safety f the laptp as this is cvered by the Manufacturer. The laptp is als available fr persnal use prvided this use des nt affect the perfrmance f the laptp fr learning. All material n the laptp is subject t review by Cllege staff. The laptp may nt be used fr any cmmercial purpses. This agreement is nly valid in Australia. The laptp cannt be taken n hliday verseas. Sftware, Cpyright and Intellectual Prperty Each laptp will be laded with a Mark Oliphant Cllege apprved sftware image cnfigured fr use n the Cllege netwrk. The image will include perating system sftware, anti- virus sftware and standard Micrsft and Apple sftware. Sftware installed by the Cllege is cpyright and must nt be distributed r deleted withut written permissin frm the Cllege. Games, Music & Nn- Cllege Applicatins Mark Oliphant Cllege des nt bject t the installatin f nn- Cllege applicatins and files n the Cllege laptps prvided that the installed applicatins and files: Are apprpriately licensed (i.e. they d nt breach cpyright and intellectual prperty laws this includes vide and music dwnlads), Are ethically and mrally acceptable (including cnsideratin f Cllege apprpriateness, age apprpriate ratings and privacy issues), D nt affect the efficient functining f the laptps fr educatinal purpses (i.e. they d nt interfere with the speed and strage capacity f the laptp r the prblems that might arise frm increased battery use), D nt affect the Cllege s wireless netwrk, D nt interfere with the learning prgram. 1

3 In particular, while sme games have significant educatinal benefits, ther games have little educatinal merit and may affect netwrk functin. As a result: The use f netwrk games is banned, N ad- hc netwrks are t be frmed. Where there is a cntraventin f this plicy, cnsequences will include re- imaging the laptp which may result in the lss f data if back- ups have nt been kept up t date. Other sanctins may be impsed as apprpriate and determined in cnsultatin with ICT Management and the Principal. Virus Prtectin Anti- virus sftware (McAfee) and mnitring sftware will be laded nt the laptp thrugh the initial imaging prcess. Updates f this sftware may be scheduled at varius times. Students shuld ensure that anti- virus sftware is kept up- t- date n their laptp and regularly check fr viruses. This happens autmatically when they cnnect t the Cllege netwrk. As students have the right t persnally use their laptps, and cnnect t the Internet frm hme, they need t take all steps t prtect the laptp frm virus attacks. Yu must nt install any antivirus sftware as McAfee is already installed and running 2 different antivirus prgrams n a cmputer will cause majr issues. Viruses can enter laptps thrugh: Remvable media such as CDs, DVDs, flppy disks and USB memry sticks, E- mails, Helpful TIPS The Internet (including web brwsing, FTP prgrams and chat prgrams/rms). D nt pen any files attached t suspicius r unknwn s, Exercise cautin when dwnlading files frm the Internet. Save the files t the laptp s hard disk and run the virus scanner n the files befre pening them, Delete chain and junk s. D nt frward r reply t any f these, Never reply t Spam, Security Prcedures Hundreds f viruses are discvered each mnth. Run yur virus scan regularly, Avid indiscriminately lading nn- standard sftware nt the laptp as it can result in infectin by viruses and spyware are cmmn causes f laptp failure. D nt leave yur laptp lgged- n when yu are nt using it. It is strngly recmmended that yu secure yur desktp with a passwrd prtected screensaver. This lcks yur laptp after a set perid f inactivity, reducing the risk f smene else perfrming any actins using yur username. Yu must update sftware with security patches when they are released. This ccurs autmatically whenever yur laptp is cnnected t the Cllege netwrk. During the Cllege day when the laptps are nt being used and the student is unable t keep the laptp n them (e.g. at lunchtime, during PE etc), the laptps shuld be securely stred in the Senir Years building. 2

4 Pwer Issues/Battery/Charging Battery Life and Cnditining the battery The battery can be cnditined t ensure a lng life. The laptp battery shuld be cmpletely pwered dwn befre recharging, It shuld then be fully charged ver night, Repeat this 3 times befre yu run the laptp frm the pwer utlet. Then it can be used cnnected t the pwer utlet if needed. This is nt usually required as the laptps run effectively when fully charged. Students shuld bring the laptp t Cllege each day fully charged. Classrms have limited facilities t recharge laptps. Caring fr yur Laptp In the event f failure, ur Cllege IT technician may be able t restre yur laptp t its riginal state. Hwever, there is n guarantee that data stred n yur laptp can be recvered. Befre installing new sftware, ask first and make sure yur backup is up t date. Packing away yur laptp Fr extra prtectin, always pack yur laptp in the prtective cver if yu are carrying it frm ne place t anther r in yur Cllege bag. D nt wrap the crd t tightly arund the pwer adapter r the crd will becme damaged. Try t avid mving yur laptp arund when it is n. Befre switching it n, gently place yur laptp n a stable surface and then switch it n. Yu still need t be careful with the laptp while it is in yur bag. D nt drp the bag frm yur shulder. Always place the bag gently dwn. Be careful when putting the laptp in the car r bus that n ther items are n tp f it and nthing will rll n t it. Laptps shuld be switched ff befre being placed int the prtective cver. Operating cnditins Avid expsing yur laptp t: Direct sunlight r surces f heat such as desk lamps, Dust, dirt, rain, liquids r misture, Heavy shck r vibratin. 3

5 LCD Screens LCD screens are delicate and will be damaged if pked, prdded, pushed r slammed. T clean yur LCD screen: Switch ff yur laptp, Lightly dampen a nn- abrasive clth with water and gently wipe the screen in a circular mtin. D nt directly apply water r cleaner t the screen. Avid applying pressure t the screen. AC Adaptr Cnnect yur adapter nly t yur laptp. D nt step n yur pwer crd r place heavy bjects n tp f it. Keep yur crd away frm heavy traffic areas. When unplugging the pwer crd, pull n the plug itself, rather than the crd. D nt wrap yur crd t tightly arund the adapter bx. Be aware f the pwer savings that cme frm running yur laptp effectively frm battery after being fully charged. This can amunt t a significant amunt per year. Lss and Damage The warranty cvers nrmal defects and usage issues. It des nt cver negligence, abuse, malicius damage r lss. It is the student s respnsibility t take apprpriate precautins t prevent wilful damage r theft. Each student issued with a laptp is expected t care fr and safeguard the laptp in a respnsible manner. The laptp is an expensive item f Cllege prperty and the Cllege issues this prperty t the student n the understanding that it will be well cared fr. Any instances f vandalism, damage, lss r theft must be reprted immediately t the Cllege. In the case f a suspected theft a plice reprt must be made by the family and an event number prvided t the Cllege. In the case f lss r damage as a result f negligence, abuse r malicius act the student r the parents/carers will be respnsible fr meeting the cst fr repairs r full replacement f the laptp. Parents/carers will have t replace lst r damaged chargers. Students are nt t deface the laptp. The student r their family must nt try r purprt t sell the laptp, ffer the laptp as security nr give pssessin f the laptp t anyne else.; Students are expected t keep their laptp in the Senir Yeas building at times when they are nt using it (examples being recess, lunch, practical perids). Failure t cmply with crrect strage will be seen as negligence. Lss r damage as a result f nt securing the laptp will result in the student being charged the cst f repair r replacement. 4

6 Parents may chse t evaluate their persnal hme cntents and car insurance t cver equipment n lan t their child, in the event f lss r damage t such laned equipment while in the care and custdy f the child. In instances where damage r lss has ccurred invlving students ther than the student it has been assigned t, the incident will be further investigated. In the case f accidental lss r damage a witnessed statutry declaratin signed by the parent/carer shuld be prvided. If a laptp is damaged r lst the Principal will determine whether replacement is apprpriate and/r whether r nt a student retains access fr hme use. Appearance and Persnalisatin As the laptps are the prperty f the Cllege, they are nt t be altered r persnalised in any way that is nt cmpletely irreversible. Labels r stickers are OK but must be easily remvable. The prtective carry case may be persnalized t prmte easy identificatin. The laptp will be permanently marked with identifying infrmatin as required by the Administrative Instructins & Guidelines (AIG s). Additinally a label cntaining the Asset Tag Number will be attached. This label must nt be remved. Laptp Specificatins It is expected that all laptps will be f the same specificatin t assist in management and curriculum develpment. Students are nt permitted t change the laptp specificatins, make mdificatins r add upgrades. Nte: The laptp warranty is vid if attempts are made t change the hardware. Acceptable Use The Netwrk Managers maintain cmputers and netwrks s that they perate effectively, ensuring that the resurces needed are available, and that the interface perates in a cnsistent way. The fllwing guidelines are utlined t ensure all users are able t access the latest research available with the latest technlgy in an acceptable and safe learning envirnment. Users will avid sites with cntent that is vilent, racist, sexist, prngraphic, dminated by ffensive language and/r illegal in any way. When at Cllege, engaging in chat lines r dwnlading files is nt permitted unless frming part f a legitimate class activity guided by the teacher f that class. The Federal Cmmunicatins Act determines guidelines fr apprpriate use. Inapprpriate use f the internet and is a serius matter and can have significant cnsequences, eg sending a message ver the internet using smene else's name. Passwrds shuld remain cnfidential. N user shuld lg- n anther student using their passwrd. It is the respnsibility f students t maintain sufficient credit in their Internet and printing accunts t allw subject related tasks t be carried ut. D nt remve files r flders that have been installed t the hard disk r netwrk. 5

7 D nt use inapprpriate r ffensive names fr files r flders. D nt bring t Cllege, r use, games r any ther materials which may be ffensive t thers. D nt engage in cyber bulling r e- crime. N laptp (r mbile phnes) with camera capabilities are t be used in change rms r tilets. Under privacy legislatin it is an ffence t take phtgraphs f individuals withut their expressed permissin and place these images n the Internet r in the public frum. Cyber bullying E- technlgy prvides individuals with a pwerful means f cmmunicating instantly with thers in bth psitive and negative ways. Cyber bullying is bullying which uses e- technlgy as a means f victimising thers. It is the use f an Internet service r mbile technlgies such as , chat rm discussin grups, instant messaging, WebPages r SMS (text messaging) with the intentin f harming anther persn. Examples can include cmmunicatins that seek t intimidate, cntrl, manipulate, put dwn r humiliate the recipient. Activities can include flaming (repeated negative messages), sexual and racist harassment, denigratin, impersnatin, trickery, exclusin and cyber stalking. The targeted persn ften feels pwerless and may need help. Electrnic crime (e- crime) Cyber bullying may invlve varying levels f severity, ranging frm ccasinal messages t frequently repeated and highly disturbing threats t a persn s life. Cyber bullying can therefre be an e- crime, a fact ften nt clearly understd by thse invlved. E- crime ccurs when a cmputer r ther electrnic cmmunicatin devices (eg mbile phnes) are used t cmmit an ffence, are targeted in an ffence, r act as a strage device in an ffence. Cnsequences Any frm f cyber bullying r e- crime will be dealt with thrugh the Cllege s Harassment Plicy and Acceptable Use f Technlgy Plicy. Serius breaches are a plice matter and will be dealt with thrugh State & Federal laws and SA plice. Data Strage Always backup yur data files n a frequent and regular basis. Yu shuld have at least tw cpies f yur files. E.g. One cpy n yur laptp hard drive and anther cpy n an external disk, such as a flash drive, external hard drive CD- ROM disk r DVD. We are nt t be respnsible fr any lss f any data nr fr any disclsure f infrmatin that may be stred n the laptp. 6

8 Technical Supprt Students wh require supprt (passwrds, functining f laptp) are able t btain this frm the ICT Supprt Centre. Students experiencing technical and sftware faults shuld prceed accrding t the fllwing steps: Internet Usage If the cmputer has an bvius hardware fault (screen r keybard nt wrking) then it shuld be taken t the ICT Supprt Centre, where the vendr will be cntacted fr supprt. If necessary, a replacement laptp will be laned t the student until the hardware fault is rectified. If the laptp has any ther issues a re- image may need t be perfrmed. Instructins and assistance n hw t re- image a laptp can be btained frm the ICT Supprt Centre. IMPORTANT FILES MUST BE BACKED UP BEFORE RE- IMAGING. Students can access the Internet thrugh the Cllege s netwrk while n site. Access t the Internet thrugh the Cllege s netwrk at Cllege will be mnitred and subject t strict filtering. Students may als use the Internet fr their persnal use at hme after setting up the laptp t access it thrugh their hme Internet Service Prvider. (Cnsult yur ISP fr prcesses t d this.) Students are reminded that inapprpriate dwnlads can be detected when the laptps are cnnected t the Cllege s netwrk. Printing At Cllege yu will be able t select a nearby printer t use. At hme yu may need t save yur wrk t a USB strage device and print frm a cmputer cnnected t a printer. Yu may als want t install yur hme printer t the laptp. 7
