Pierpont is part of the state s growing high technology corridor with a metro area of about 55,000 residents. With an enrollment of nearly 3,000 students, Pierpont offers more than 30 associate degree programs, as well as advanced skill sets and one year certificates. Through its Center for Workforce Education, Pierpont provides workforce training and community education for its 13- county region.
2 Pierpont Community & Technical College PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT Pierpont Community & Technical College Board of Governors has officially launched a search for the institution s third President with the release of the presidential position announcement and an invitation to applicants. The Board of Governors will work towards selecting a new President by the end of the 2016 Spring Semester. The search process will continue and may be extended for as long as necessary in order for the Presidential Search Committee to identify and hire the most qualified candidate for President. 3 THE PRESIDENTIAL PROFILE The Board of Governors of Pierpont Community & Technical College invites applications and nominations for the position of President. The Board seeks a leader with academic and senior administrative experience to serve as its next President. Committed to advancing the institution to higher levels of achievement, the President of Pierpont will embrace and articulate the mission and strategic plan of the institution. The President reports directly to the twelve-member Pierpont Board of Governors, nine of whom are appointed by the Governor of West Virginia. The President is responsible for executing the Pierpont Community & Technical College s strategic plan and the will of the Board. The President is also responsible for developing and making recommendations to the Board on all major policy, program, and budget matters. The President will strengthen established programs, technology, and services while addressing educational needs in the workforce and institutional partnerships. Highest priorities will be to grow Pierpont s student enrollment and develop a successful retention plan. The President will work collaboratively with others, finding common ground when there are diverse viewpoints. The President will use decision making and strategic planning to balance and prioritize challenges and opportunities, keeping the institution on target in accomplishing its goals and aspirations. The President will effectively govern fiscal resources. The President will know the funding and budgeting process at the state level and ensure that the institution is operationally and fiscally sound. The President will confidently interact with elected and appointed officials, agencies and boards at the state and federal level. The President will lead the faculty, staff, and students of Pierpont in a supportive, responsive, working and learning environment and will adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and personal integrity and credibility.
4 EXPECTATIONS/CHARACTERISTICS SOUGHT IN THE NEW PRESIDENT The President of Pierpont will have: An understanding of the mission and vision of community and technical colleges A record of success as an effective teamoriented leader, motivator and manager of people Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a proven ability to handle multiple competing demands A demonstrated commitment to building partnerships and coalitions with business and industry, government agencies, public schools, other colleges and universities, and other community groups Experience in supporting and promoting economic development and workforce preparation, including an understanding of the role of a public college in meeting education and training needs A proven strategic thinker with the highest level of integrity who is able to collaborate with all college stakeholders, including the Board of Governors Demonstrated success in institutional advancement such as revenue generation, fundraising, and development An ability and willingness to make tough decisions based upon research and data Among the personal characteristics of highest priority are: A demonstrated leader and proven manager with the ability to motivate, inspire, and instill confidence in others An active listener who is open and approachable and accessible to students, faculty, staff, and others A person comfortable with high public visibility and experience with developing partnerships and alliances A thoughtful leader with a track record of integrating cutting edge programs and ideas An energetic self-starter who is flexible and be able to prioritize multiple tasks
5 QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION The candidate for President of Pierpont must have: The successful candidate will be expected to: Doctorate or other terminal degree, along with significant and relevant administrative leadership and faculty/academic experience Excellent communication and interpersonal skills A record of building partnerships and coalitions with business, government, public schools, colleges and universities, and other community groups Foster and enhance collaboration with the communities the college serves Expand student enrollment and retention Lead the college in the successful achievement of its strategic priorities Provide effective leadership in supporting and promoting economic development and workforce preparation, academic excellence, fundraising, and marketing GOVERNANCE AND ADMINISTRATION Pierpont Community & Technical College is one of nine publicly supported two-year institutions of higher education in the state of West Virginia. The Pierpont Board of Governors is comprised of nine lay/citizen members appointed by the Governor of the State and three institutional members that represent faculty, students, and classified employees and are elected by their respective constituent group. The institution s twelve-member Board oversees the financial, academic, and service affairs of the College and has full authority to take such actions as it deems necessary or appropriate to accomplish the purposes for which it was formed, specifically to meet the educational and training needs of the community of Pierpont Community & Technical College service district. Although mandated to meet six times a year, the Pierpont Board of Governors customarily approves a monthly meeting schedule of ten times a year. An annual Board of Governors retreat is typically held in December of each year. Standing Committees of the Pierpont Board of Governors consist of the Audit/Finance Committee, the Marketing Committee and the Regional Academics Committee. These Committees usually precede the monthly meeting schedule adopted by the Pierpont Board of Governors. The Pierpont Board of Governors also serves as the North Central Advanced Technology Center Advisory Board which meets quarterly. The members of the Board work cooperatively with the Pierpont Community & Technical College President and administration relative to institutional governance and strategic planning. Under the leadership of the President, administrative council are involved in internal decision-making, continuous planning, and assessment of the strategic goals approved by the Board. Among these are the President s Cabinet that is comprised of the President, Vice Presidents, and the Executive Assistant to the President.
6 OUR CAMPUSES The Main Campus in Fairmont, WV Pierpont is headquartered on Locust Avenue in Fairmont, WV. Sharing a beautiful 120-acre campus with Fairmont State University, Pierpont can offer students the affordability of a community college with the amenities of a university. Although Pierpont and Fairmont State share a main campus and services, the two institutions have separate accreditations, governing boards, and missions. Over the last several years, new buildings and amenities have been added to the Locust Avenue campus. A new Engineering Technology Building, a residence hall, the Falcon Student Center, and a parking garage have been opened. The Falcon Center is the hub of campus life at Pierpont. The 126,000 square-foot facility provides an environment where students can comfortably interact with one another while enjoying dining areas, study lounges, and a variety of fitness and wellness programs. The Falcon Center houses the campus bookstore, food court, study lounges, fitness rooms, gymnasiums, aquatics, an indoor track, computer labs, student health services, campus security, and conference centers. Note: The Fairmont campus is 100 miles from Pittsburgh, PA and 230 miles from Washington, D.C. Regional Locations While Pierpont s administration is headquartered in Fairmont, we offer classes at regional academic campuses and education centers throughout Pierpont s 13-county service region. Pierpont's north-central service region is divided into northern and southern service areas. The northern area includes Barbour, Doddridge, Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Preston and Taylor Counties. The southern service area includes Braxton, Calhoun, Gilmer, Lewis, Randolph, and Upshur Counties. A range of classes are offered in partnership with technical centers and high schools in many of these counties for traditional, non-traditional, and high school students. The North Central Advanced Technology Center Scheduled to open in Fall 2016 in the high technology corridor of Fairmont, the North Central Advanced Technology Center will be the hub of many of Pierpont s technology programs from the School of Business, Aviation, and Technology, the School of Health Careers, and the School of Workforce Education.
7 This state-of-the-art facility will offer credit and non-credit training to meet the growing demands of the regional workforce. Students will be prepared to apply for high-demand jobs through hands-on learning offered in dynamic training laboratories, simulators and by experienced educators. The Gaston Caperton Center in Clarksburg, WV Pierpont's Gaston Caperton Center campus is located in Clarksburg, WV. The Center is a 36,000 square-foot facility that serves approximately 1,000 students each week from both Pierpont and Fairmont State University. The facility offers courses in Liberal Studies, Business Technology, and the competitive Physical Therapist Assistant program. It also houses computer labs, general meeting rooms, a full-service library, and student lounges. With dedicated faculty, modern classrooms and instructional facilities, and easy access, the Gaston Caperton Center is a focal point of higher education in Harrison County. Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center The Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Center, located at the North Central West Virginia Airport in Bridgeport, offers hands-on training from expert faculty members. The Center's academic programs are part of the School of Business, Aviation and Technology. The Center was established in the fall of 1993 in support of the North Central West Virginia aerospace industry. Braxton County The Braxton County Center is located in the Braxton County High School, just off of the I-79 Exit 67. At this location Pierpont offers a comprehensive LPN program that is designed to allow students to complete their training in just five semesters of evening or weekend classes. Lewis County Classes are provided in at the Lewis County Center in the Lewis County High School. General education courses are provided in flexible schedules and the Early Admission Program allows high school students an opportunity to get an advanced start on college. Monongalia County Technical Education Center (MTEC) The Pierpont MTEC facility, located at 1000 Mississippi Street in Morgantown, offers general education courses and math and writing tutoring. Pierpont students have free access to our accredited tutoring program which has been certified by the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Certification Program.
8 MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of Pierpont Community & Technical College is to provide opportunities for learning, training, and further education that enrich the lives of individuals and promote the economic growth of our service region and state. Pierpont Community & Technical College strives to enhance the quality of life for people of North Central West Virginia through accessible, affordable, comprehensive, responsive, workforce-related training, and quality higher education opportunities. To fulfill this mission, Pierpont Community & Technical College will: Provide a comprehensive selection of career/technical educational opportunities at the certificate and associate degree levels developed through interaction with employers, employees, and college personnel Offer transfer education opportunities enabling students to acquire an affordable general education background before matriculating to the college or university of choice Provide opportunities for seamless transition from certificates to associate and baccalaureate degrees Make available developmental educational opportunities to students who need assistance in improving academic skills to be successful in higher education Develop and deliver continuing and community educational opportunities throughout North Central West Virginia such as lifelong learning opportunities, occupational recertification programs, and higher education opportunities for students enrolled in secondary schools Provide workforce training and economic development activities for the citizens of north-central West Virginia based on needs of the community and region Focus on development of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills to foster individual growth, career development, responsible citizenship, and commitment to lifelong learning. The College concentrates its energies and resources on its students, many of whom are the first generation of their families to attend college, adults returning to college or enrolling in higher education for the first time, and transfer students. The College, therefore, offers its diverse student body a wide range of programs, flexible scheduling, and support services, all designed to foster success. To strengthen intellectual development, all students pursuing a degree at Pierpont Community & Technical College are engaged in a general education program, a body of
9 coursework designed to expand their knowledge of civilization, society, scientific inquiry, and artistic expression while preparing them to think about interrelationships among disciplines and prepare for a lifetime of learning. The College is committed to student learning and focuses its resources on programs that prepare students for careers and advanced education in West Virginia and beyond. Pierpont Community & Technical College provides a broad spectrum of degree options in business and offers programs with specialized accreditation in engineering technology and health careers. Pierpont Community & Technical College is closely identified with its communities. Partnerships with business and industry, public schools, government agencies, and other organizations contribute to economic development; the College fosters enlightened and productive citizenship in its immediate location, the region, and the world. PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES Pierpont Community & Technical College, an undergraduate institution operating under the authority of the Pierpont Board of Governors, is governed by its president with the aid and advice of its Board of Governors, administrators, Faculty Assembly, Classified Staff Council, and Student Government. The College offers programs for career/technical education and grants Certificate of Applied Science Degree and the degrees of Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, or Associate in Applied Science after two years of study. Pierpont Community & Technical College considers that its broad objective is to educate its students as intelligent and productive persons, capable of participating in and understanding the world of the twenty-first century. Accordingly, the College seeks to provide a suitable environment for free and responsible inquiry into the nature, sources, and implications of human knowledge and culture; and it challenges students to promote their own intellectual, social, and personal development. The College faculty serves this objective by guiding students in acquiring knowledge and by maintaining a dialogue with them. Specifically, the mission of Pierpont Community & Technical College is to provide programs needed by those in its geographic service area to the extent permitted by its financial and human resources and its assigned role in the State s system of public higher education. This mission is accomplished by meeting these objectives: Providing a variety of career and technical center/occupational programs of two years duration or less. possible level and providing financial support to those who need it to gain equal access to higher education. Providing opportunities for occupationally oriented study through expansion of existing industrial technology programs and the development of additional career-related curricula. Bringing selected college study opportunities into communities in the College s service region through the use of the mass media, regional educational centers, external degree programs, and other forms of nontraditional study. Encouraging a broad segment of the populace, including various age groups and the economically deprived, to avail themse+lves of educational opportunities. Serving the greatest number of students by holding College costs at the lowest Relating the breadth of the curriculum to the availability of appropriate employment opportunities and the needs of business, industrial, and public service agencies in the College s service area. Offering continuing education programs to provide career updating, cultural enrichment, and personal skill development. 13 A BRIEF HISTORY OF PIERPONT COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE 1974 The Community College was established at Fairmont State College Under the provisions of SB 420, governance for Fairmont State College and Fairmont State Community & Technical College was changed from the Board of Regents to the Board of Directors Fairmont State Community & Technical College established a campus compact under the provisions of SB 653 and began working toward the goal of independent accreditation Fairmont State College and Fairmont State Community & Technical College are appointed a shared Board of Governors Fairmont State Community & Technical College assumes responsibility for providing Community College education to five (5) of the counties formerly served by Glenville State College under the provisions of HB Fairmont State Community & Technical College hosted a site visit from the North Central Association in the spring of The college received notification of receipt of 10 year accreditation from the North Central Association on August 8, SB 448 established a position of president for Pierpont Community & Technical College. Provost Blair Montgomery was named as the institution s first President SB 792 renames Fairmont State Community & Technical College as Pierpont Community & Technical College and remerged it as a division of Fairmont State University Higher Learning Commission returns for a Focused Visit to remerge the accreditation of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College HB 3215 requires separation of Pierpont Community & Technical College from Fairmont State University and provides the College with a separate Board of Governors (constituted in August 2008). Pierpont is again required to attain independent accreditation from FSU Higher Learning Commission holds a Focus Visit at Pierpont and recommends that the accreditation achieved in 2003 be reinstated for Pierpont Community & Technical College Pierpont Community & Technical College Board of Governors selected Dr. Doreen M. Larson to serve as the second President of the institution in June Higher Learning Commission approves continued accreditation after March 2014 site visit The Pierpont Board of Governors selects Dale Bradley, CFO and VP of Finance and Administration as the Interim President in September 2015.
