5 Silver Slipper to host meat pie eating championship HANCOCK COUNTY A world-sanctioned food eating competition is coming to Silver Slipper Casino Hotel. The property will host the inaugural Silver Slipper World Meat Pie Eating Championship on Saturday, March 5, during a day filled with entertainment and fun, and plenty of meat pies. Held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the beachside event is free and open to the public. The official contest, hosted and sanctioned by Major League Eating, is scheduled for 2 p.m. and has $5,000 in prize money. Staying true to the original 2003 Meat Pie Eating Championship, contestants will be eating 6-ounce meat pies made by the Natchitoches Meat Pie Company. Live entertainment, starting at noon, will feature Rockin Dopsie Jr. & The Zydeco Twisters. Food and drinks will be available for purchase and attendees are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs, as seating will be limited. The event is not only an eating competition, but also a tribute to the late Boyd Bulot, a Chalmette, La., resident and reigning World Meat Pie record holder. Known as a friend to the Silver Slipper, Bulot was a colorful professional eater in his own right. His record of eating 16 6-ounce meat pies in 10 minutes will be on the line during the March 5 event. 8 PLAY TO WIN More ways to (not) lose your shirt in a casino In the previous issue of Jackpot!, I described several ways to lose your shirt when you gamble in a casino. They included betting on hunches, making sure you are tired, drinking when you gamble, over betting to get free comps, mimicking how the blackjack dealer plays and playing penny slots as fast as you can with max coins bet on every line. Below are five more surefire ways to lose your shirt in a casino. Play Video Poker Machines. Be careful with this one. You don t want to end up playing on a machine that pays well. First, pay no mind to the payout schedules on the machine. One video poker machine is just as good as another. However, if you insist on checking them out, then play the Jacks or Better machines that pay 6 or a maximum 7 coins for a full house and 5 for a flush per coin played. Nothing higher. If you look around any casino, you are bound to find them. And while you are at it, don t be like those smart players who play max coins. No, play only one or two or three or four coins at the highest denomination on the machine. Moreover, here are some strategy tips that will help you lose even quicker. Always keep a kicker with any pair. Always draw to an inside straight. Always keep two or more cards to the royal flush and discard the rest even winning pairs. And never use your slot card when you play. And Winning Ways By Dr. Henry Tamburin for heaven s sake, don t even think about bringing a strategy card. With this approach to playing video poker, I guarantee you ll have the worst of it. Play a Poker-Based Table Game. Casinos have lots of table games based on poker such as Mississippi Stud, Three Card Poker, Let it Ride and so on. It doesn t matter which game, just sit down and make a bet anywhere on the layout. Don t worry about the rules, the dealer will help you. If you re lucky, you are bound to make a lot of bets with a high house edge in these games that will speed your losing. And please, don t even think about bringing a strategy card. And if you find yourself not losing fast enough, look around the layout for a progressive bet that pays a lot of money if it hits. The house edge on those bets is high (nose bleed). And I ll bet you never thought you can lose so fast playing a poker game. Bet the Tie in Baccarat. Here s a classy way to lose big time. Just take a seat at a baccarat table and make only one bet on the tie. Don t even think about betting on the bank or player the percentages are way too good. No, instead you are going for the long shot tie bet that has a casino edge of about 14 percent. If you feel uncomfortable See Tamburin, Page 25 No matter your age, dice control is not easy From Jerry: I took the Golden Touch dice control course in May Made a mock-up table and practiced every day. Through the year 2009 I had recorded 88,900 practice throws and had a SRR of about 8.5. I continued throwing almost daily since that date but stopped recording the results. I would tell anyone who asked me that controlling the dice is very difficult. The casinos have adjusted the surface of the tables to be tougher to beat. I go to the casinos about twice monthly on junkets but have not been an overall winner; mostly a loser. I would suggest to anyone that throwing the dice at the craps table is somewhat like golfers. There are thousands of golfers who practice and still do not get to be in Tiger Woods level. There has to be a tinge of luck and mental attitude on every dice toss. I live alone and have reached 81 years of age and live 800 miles from the nearest craps table. The junkets give me something to do and I certainly cannot take my money with me on that final trip. I enjoy reading all of your articles. Frank Responds: Jerry, I agree with you. Dice control (or dice influence, as some prefer to call it) is not easy. Most people who try it give up when they realize they must practice and keep track of their results. The new tables require a change in how you throw the dice. You must bring the dice lower and they have to hit the wall softly. The Frankly Speaking By Frank Scoblete lower arc prevents the surface from returning the energy and shooting the dice into the air. This is also another difficult thing to learn. Since you didn t mention how you bet I hope you are not making bets you can t overcome. Now to the important thing I agree with you. I have read a few of your books and am an advocate of your precision rolling techniques and theories. My question is, when being rated on craps, what bets are taken into account for the total spread? Frank Responds: There may be some small differences among casinos about rating players but usually the odds bets are not a part of the ratings. Those bets such as Pass and Come will not garner the kinds of comps that the Crazy Crapper bets such as the Yo, the Hardways or others would accumulate.
