2 Kia ora Welcome to CPIT Planning for your future is both exciting and scary. We re here to help. CPIT offers a number of programmes designed specifically for youth. Gain qualifications, skills and knowledge that will enable you to make confident decisions about your future and set yourself up for further tertiary study or employment. This guide lets you explore Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC), Youth Guarantee, STAR, STP and Year 10 Taster study options, and choose the programme that s best for you.

5 At CPIT you ll be tutored by industry experts and experience all aspects of the tertiary environment including further career advice and study support. You ll expand on your talents and gain new skills in our purpose-built facilities. You ll also benefit from access to excellent resources and learning support services, as well as our health centre, library, cafés, and a range of social events and activities on campus. 6 Compare your options Eligibility Structure Canterbury Tertiary College To enrol you must be in Year at secondary school. Full time study enrolled in both school and a tertiary institution part time. Youth Guarantee To enrol you must be 16 to 19 years old (inclusive), not enrolled at secondary school, and a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. Full time study at CPIT. STP Pilot To enrol you must be enrolled at secondary school and aged 16 to 19 years old. Part time study at CPIT. Cost Free Free Free (through funding from your secondary school). Qualification Type Additional Information and/ or achievement -based NCEA programmes. Transport assistance is available on a case-by-case basis. These courses provide experiences for students to help inform their tertiary training and career choices. Vocational Pathways Vocational Pathways enable you to see how your learning is relevant for a wide range of jobs and study options in five broad sectors of industry: CREATIVE INDUSTRIES CONSTRUCTION & INFRASTRUCTURE SOCIAL & COMMUNITY SERVICE INDUSTRIES MANUFACTURING & TECHNOLOGY PRIMARY INDUSTRIES The pathways help you think about your future options to see which subjects and s you should study to achieve your career goals. They are designed to improve relevance of learning, support programme design and careers advice, and improve the links between education and employment. Achieving credits towards Vocational Pathways means you re developing foundation skills and knowledge in areas that employers value. Credits NZQF credits are national credits gained from unit or achievement s and are listed on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. CPIT credits may include both NZQF credits and local credits. NZQF or CPIT credits can be used to gain entry into further tertiary study. 6

7 Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC) Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC) is a partnership between secondary schools and tertiary education providers. It s a different way of learning where you complete your NCEA studies at secondary school AND start working towards a tertiary qualification. Your studies will focus on relevant skills and industry-based training that lead to employment, apprenticeship opportunities or further tertiary level study. CTC things you need to know Entry Requirements To enrol you must be in Year 11, 12 or 13 at secondary school. You must also be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, or hold a visa which allows you to be enrolled in a New Zealand secondary school. If English isn t your first language, you re required to provide evidence of your English language skills. Refer to the Acceptable Alternatives Chart on our website: or contact CPIT for an assessment. NCEA credits vary between programmes, however all credits will go towards your NCEA qualification. All qualifications are recognised by NZQA on the National Qualifications Framework. All CTC programmes have pathways to higher levels of education across the tertiary sector. Entry into these programmes depends on the results you achieve while at CTC and at school, and the entry criteria of specific programmes. 7

8 Work Experience Some CTC programmes give you the opportunity to take part in work experience. This gives you the chance to experience a job first-hand, and decide if it s the right fit for you. CTC works with you to find a suitable work experience placement. It was a really positive learning environment. Jessica Garlick CTC Automotive student Classes and Attendance To get the most out of this opportunity you need to participate fully in both your secondary school course and your CTC programme. Your attendance is monitored daily and reported back to your school to ensure you re making good progress in both areas. Your CTC classes will be made up of students from a variety of Canterbury secondary schools. Timetable Options Thursday and Friday, 8.30am-3pm If your school is interested in looking at an individual arrangement that differs from the times above please contact us. Programmes commence in February and run through to the middle of November. Programmes must achieve a minimum number of applicants before they can run and their availability varies from year to year. Expenses CTC programmes are FREE - there are no fees and all materials and equipment will be supplied for you. Transport Transport assistance is available on a case-by-case basis. Please liaise with the Youth Transitions team for further information. Changes If you change your mind about the study option you ve chosen, you may be able to switch to another course if space is available. Please discuss this with your school, with a CTC Student Support Advisor or with your tutor. If CTC isn t right for you, you re able to return to school full time and continue with your studies. Advisors Student Support Providers CTC partners with some of Canterbury s leading tertiary institutions and local secondary schools to provide a wide variety of programmes. Students are enrolled at both their secondary school and the tertiary institute offering their programme. SERVICE INDUSTRIES LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 30 PROGRAMME CODE: NZEP2T (Automotive and Engineering) Leading towards: NCEA Level 2 Manufacturing and Technology Vocational Pathway Award PROVIDER: CPIT Trades, Ensors Road Programme Content This one-day taster programme explores the hands-on skills required for MIG welding, collision repair, machine and hand tool operation and general engineering tasks, enabling you to make an informed decision about your future study and career pathways. You ll also learn to balance and fit vehicle wheels. On successful completion of this programme you can choose to specialise in either automotive trades or engineering with further study in one of the following: National Certificate in Automotive Level 3 (NC1421) Certificate in Engineering (Fabrication) Level 3 (CH3879) Certificate in Engineering (Welding and Structural Steel) Level 3 (CH3941) Certificate in General Engineering Level 3 (CH3962) National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Body) Collision Repair or Refinishing (Level 3) Further study can lead to employment in the engineering or automotive trades industries. 9

SERVICE INDUSTRIES LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 63 PROGRAMME CODE: NZEP2T Leading towards: NCEA Level 2 Manufacturing and Technology Vocational Pathway Award PROVIDER: CPIT Trades, Ensors Road Programme Content This two-day taster programme explores the hands-on skills required for MIG welding, collision repair, machine and hand tool operation and general engineering tasks, enabling you to make an informed decision about your future study and career pathways. You ll also learn to balance and fit vehicle wheels. On successful completion of this programme you can choose to specialise in either automotive trades or engineering with further study in one of the following: National Certificate in Automotive Level 3 (NC1421) Certificate in Engineering (Fabrication) Level 3 (CH3879) Certificate in Engineering (Welding and Structural Steel) Level 3 (CH3941) Certificate in General Engineering Level 3 (CH3962) Further study can lead to employment in the engineering or automotive trades industries. 10

11 Business Administration and Computing Get a head start in the business world with the skills you need to succeed. LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 3 60 PROGRAMME CODE: NC0633 National Certificate in Business & Computing Programme Content Topics covered by this practically-based programme range from the key computer applications used for business administration and communications, through to the customer service and office skills that are important to employers. You ll also develop your keyboard skills and speed. This certificate prepares you to apply for further certificates, diplomas and degrees in business, commerce and computing. Business administration and computing qualifications will set you up for careers such as office administrator, personal assistant, retail and reception work. PROVIDER: 11

12 Café and Tourism, Introduction to Polish your customer service skills and put them to the test in practical training environments. SERVICE INDUSTRIES LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 TBA PROGRAMME CODE: TBA Programme Content This programme allows you to explore several key service industries so you can choose the career path you d like to pursue. You ll learn about exciting New Zealand and overseas tourist destinations, how to work safely and efficiently in the retail and distribution sectors as well as gaining food and beverage knowledge and hospitality skills. Once you ve chosen your preferred career pathway, you can continue to study at Level 3 in tourism, hospitality or hairdressing. in these sectors are many and varied and can take you around the world. 13 Carpentry Year 1 Learn key carpentry techniques and theories for a career in construction. CONSTRUCTION & INFRASTRUCTURE LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 3 43 PROGRAMME CODE: CH3421 Leading towards: Certificate in Carpentry Level 4 Programme Content Your training will be focused on understanding measurements, calculations, quantities, materials and carpentry methods, as well as the use and care of hand and power tools. You ll also complete 40 hours of workplace learning with a building company in Christchurch. On completion of this programme you can either move on to further training with the Certificate in Carpentry Level 4 or take on an apprenticeship and study at night school. With further training around core knowledge and techniques in carpentry you ll have the skills to construct a range of objects, from small items like desk drawers to large structures such as buildings. 14 Chef Training, Introduction to Become a chef and discover the exciting, fast-paced world of professional cookery. LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 3 63 PROGRAMME CODE: NZ2100 New Zealand Certificate in Cookery Level 3 PROVIDER: Programme Content As a chef in a restaurant you ll be part of a wider hospitality team aiming to provide excellent service to your customers. This practical programme will equip you with the required skills to excel in the industry including practical professional cookery and introductory restaurant service. Aspiring chefs and restaurateurs can undertake further training with options like the New Zealand Certificate in Baking Level 4 or the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery Level 4. A broad range of opportunities exist nationally and internationally for trained chefs. Depending on your area of interest you may find yourself working in cafés, family restaurants, fine dining restaurants, hotels, commercial catering, airline catering or on a cruise ship. 14

15 Construction Trades, Introduction to One day option Sample a range of construction trades with this hands-on introductory programme. CONSTRUCTION & INFRASTRUCTURE LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 31 PROGRAMME CODE: NCEP1T (Construction and Allied Trades) Programme Content This programme provides an introduction to a range of construction trade areas. You ll learn skills such as the correct use of hand and portable power tools and get hands-on experience with a variety of practical projects. At the completion of the programme you ll be able to make an informed decision about your next step towards further study or a career. On completion of this programme you can enrol for further study in your chosen trade. This programme can lead you into a range of careers such as carpentry, joinery, furniture making, painting and decorating or plasterboard fixing and/ or finishing. 17 Electrical Engineering Learn basic electrical skills in safe and specialised facilities. MANUFACTURING & TECHNOLOGY LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 45 PROGRAMME CODE: NCEP2T (Electrical) Leading towards: NCEA Level 2 Manufacturing and Technology Vocational Pathway PROVIDER: CPIT Trades, Ensors Road and Southern Institute of Technology, Waterloo Road Programme Content This programme focuses on the use of electrical diagrams, instruments and mechanics as well as simple mathematics and measurements. You ll learn how to solder wires and components, install flexible cords and use safeguards with portable appliances. Other areas covered include safe working practices, safety testing, first-aid and CPR. On successful completion of this programme you ll be awarded the National Certificate of Electrical Engineering Level 2. On completion you can move on to the Electrical Engineering Year Two or take on an apprenticeship, completing your studies at night school. If you continue training in this field and qualify as an electrical engineer, you ll become an expert in designing, maintaining and improving products that are powered by or produce electricity. 17

18 Fashion Design, Introduction to Turn your dream of seeing your designs on the catwalk into a reality. CREATIVE INDUSTRIES LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 TBA PROGRAMME CODE: NCEP6T Leading towards: NCEA Level 2 Creative Industries Vocational Pathway Award Programme Content Discover the opportunities available within the fashion design industry through this introductory course. Experienced tutors will work alongside you as you cover the basics of design, patternmaking and construction, and learn to use industry equipment in a workroom environment. Further study options include a certificate or diploma in fashion technology and design. With a higher level qualification under your belt you ll have the skills required to work in a range of jobs, including as a machinist, production assistant, stylist, buyer or fully-fledged fashion designer. 19 Hairdressing (Salon Support) Year 1 Cut a path towards a rewarding career in hairdressing. SERVICE INDUSTRIES LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 55 PROGRAMME CODE: OT5062 Certificate in Foundation Level 2 (Hairdressing) PROVIDER: Aoraki Polytechnic, Christchurch Programme Content Our talented tutors will teach you essential salon skills including hair consultation, analysis and treatments, the latest trends and styling methods, product knowledge and technologies. Our facilities mirror those of a real salon and we invite clients in for you to practise on. Salon administration and tasks such as managing bookings, looking after clients and displaying and selling products are also covered, along with time management, health and safety and communication skills. This programme is delivered over two years. Enrol for a second year to complete the Certificate in Foundation Level 3 (Hairdressing). Upon completion of this programme, you ll be competent in customer service, salon support and elementary hairdressing, giving you a sound basis for employment in a salon or further training in hairdressing. Hairdressing (Salon Support) Year 2 Gain further skills and knowledge to start your career as a hairdresser. SERVICE INDUSTRIES LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 3 52 PROGRAMME CODE: OT5063 Certificate in Foundation Level 3 PROVIDER: Aoraki Polytechnic, Christchurch NOTE: Students must complete Hairdressing (Salon Support) Year One before beginning this programme. Programme Content In year two you ll further develop your skills, particularly in the areas of styling, colouring, highlighting and blow drying. You ll also gain a solid foundation in managing work flow, appointments, payments, accounting and banking. On completion of this programme you ll be able to begin a hairdressing apprenticeship. With further experience you can become a senior stylist or colourist, and maybe own your own salon. 19

20 Health and Social Services Get prepared for an interesting and dynamic career in the health sector. SOCIAL & COMMUNITY LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 42 PROGRAMME CODE: NCEP5N (Community Health and Support) Leading towards: NCEA Level 2 Social and Community Services Vocational Award PROVIDER: Programme Content This programme prepares you for employment in the health and disability and human services sector. You ll learn about the structure and role of health and disability, social services and the police in New Zealand. You ll also gain a basic understanding of law making processes and some practical skills and knowledge about caring for others and improving their wellbeing. On completion of this programme you have the opportunity to pursue further training with the Diploma in Enrolled Nursing, National Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Support, the Certificate in Human Services, or the Certificate in Pre Health and Science. The health sector is enormously diverse. stemming from this course include caregiver, enrolled nurse, mental health support worker or social worker. 20

21 Hospitality Hospitality and cooking skills can take you all around the world. Experience the varied roles available and discover the best fit for you. SERVICE INDUSTRIES LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 46 PROGRAMME CODE: TBA National Certificate in Hospitality (Introductory Cookery) Level 2 and leading towards NCEA Level 2 Service Industries Vocational Pathway Award PROVIDER: Aranui High School Programme Content All basic aspects of cookery are included in this programme and you ll also participate in real hospitality functions. An introduction to restaurant service is included. Upon successful completion of this programme you ll be awarded the Level 2 National Certificate in Hospitality (Introductory Cookery). This qualification allows you to make the right career decision within hospitality. Further study options include: certificates in baking, cookery, food and beverage service or the National Diploma in Hospitality Management. There are many different roles throughout the hospitality and tourism industry. Restaurants, hotels, resorts, cafés and cruise ships all need friendly and competent staff who can provide excellent service to their customers. Hospitality (Supported Learning) Discover the wide variety of roles available in the hospitality sector. SERVICE INDUSTRIES LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 1 & 2 30 PROGRAMME CODE: TBA TBA PROVIDER: Programme Content If you have a disability, this programme provides you with a supported learning environment to help you transition from school to the workplace. You ll gain first-hand experience in cookery, baking, restaurant service and hospitality service. You ll also participate in practical activities like eating out and preparing and serving a light meal, plus you ll learn about personal safety and basic hospitality terminology. Note: This programme is designed for high school students with disabilities that do not restrict mobility and coordination. To qualify for entry to this programme you must have a full teacher aide support and/or be enrolled in a learning support classroom, or be enrolled in a special education unit. This is the ideal stepping stone to further study in hospitality at CPIT. Following this programme you can apply for further study or seek employment in restaurants, retirement villages and supermarkets. 21

22 Retail Develop the skills required to provide excellent customer service within a retail sales environment. SERVICE INDUSTRIES LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 60 PROGRAMME CODE: NCEP4N (Retail) Programme Content This programme covers a diverse range of skills, from phone and face-to-face customer service techniques to problem solving, stock care and workplace health and safety. Options for further study include the New Zealand Certificate in Retail Level 3 and the National Certificate of Business Administration and Computing Level 3. The skills and knowledge acquired on this course can be applied in a wide variety of junior sales, service and retail roles. Leading towards: NCEA Level 2 Service Industries Vocational Pathway Award and the New Zealand Certificate in Retail (Customer Service and Sales Support) Level 2* *Pending approval PROVIDER: and retail outlet 22

23 Sports, Wellness and Health, Introduction to Gain skills for employment in sports, physical activity or health promotion. INCLUDES STANDARDS TOWARDS A VARIETY OF VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 2 45 PROGRAMME CODE: NCEP5N (Sports, Wellness and Health) Programme Content This course explores how individuals can be encouraged to undertake physical activity in a safe and enjoyable way and the positive life impacts of that physical activity. It also looks at the factors that determine why people take part in physical activity for sport, recreation or health. On completion of this programme you ll have the opportunity to pursue further training with the Certificate in Pre Health and Science, or the Certificate in Fitness. Study in this area can lead to a variety of career opportunities in sports, physical activity and health promotion. Leading towards: NCEA Level 2 Social and Community Services Vocational Pathway Award PROVIDER: 23

24 Youth Guarantee If you re 16 to 19 years of age and no longer at school, or you re planning on leaving school, Youth Guarantee programmes are a great way to learn practical skills and gain a qualification. All Youth Guarantee programmes are free and could give you credits towards NCEA. If you re a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, you can apply to study regardless of the qualifications you ve achieved at school. If English isn t your first language, you re required to provide evidence of your English language skills. Refer to the Acceptable Alternatives Chart on our website: or contact CPIT for an assessment. PLEASE NOTE: Only 20% of our Youth Guarantee students for 2016 can have NCEA Level 2 and do a Youth Guarantee Level 2 programme. There is no restriction on our Youth Guarantee Level 3 programmes. 26 Business Administration and Computing If you re good with people, organised and you want to work in an office environment, challenge yourself with this qualification. LEVEL: NZQF CREDITS: 3 60 PROGRAMME CODE: NC0633 National Certificate in Business & Computing PROVIDER: Programme Content This six-month office administration qualification will give you all the essential skills you need to launch a career in a wide variety of business environments. You ll learn important skills in computing, data processing, MYOB, Excel/Access, customer service, office administration and document production. If you re interested in gaining further skills, this programme will provide you with a study pathway into further business programmes, such as Business Administration Level 4 or a diploma in business. Business administration and computing qualifications will set you up for careers such as office administrator, personal assistant, retail and reception work.
