Career Management Program Industry relevance and experience is at the core of everything we do at William Blue. We believe industry experience is so vital that we make the Career Management Program a compulsory part of every course. No one gets the practical experience they need to succeed by sitting in a classroom all day. So we look to partner with the best in the business to help our students progress their careers. Our Career Management Program is designed to improve student skill levels and increase their exposure to the industry. This allows a strong framework for students to learn, practice and develop confidence and proficiency in their chosen field alongside their studies. The program has three stages that vary between Vocational and Higher Education programs in both focus and timing.

3 William Blue Dining OUR TRAINING GROUND With a seating capacity of 60 people for lunch and dinner, William Blue Dining is open to the public and is an essential ingredient in the student experience. With awards including Best Restaurant in a Training Institution by the Restaurant and Catering Association under its belt, William Blue Dining is well-known around Sydney. It is a real restaurant environment with paying customers, and the open plan kitchen allows diners to watch our cookery students in their element. The daily interaction with customers gives students a deeper understanding of all aspects of the hospitality industry, and students are assessed in this live situation on a variety of skills. It is the perfect place to train and put their theory into practice.

4 Workplace Engagement Program (WEP) WEP is introduced at the beginning of trimester two and occurs alongside other studies. It is a voluntary program (unpaid) and is monitored via workplace visits, logs books and assessments. It requires the completion of up to 160 hours of practical work in Front of House (Event Management students) or Back of House (Commercial Cookery students). Rostered for up to 10 weeks unpaid: any required work outside of the agreed shifts or hours will be paid at the normal relevant rate. William Blue will maintain Workers Compensation, Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance for all students, as required by law in the state which the placement takes place. Prior to commencement in the Workplace Engagement Program, students must have completed Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), Food Safety Supervisor, Preparation skills, Basic cookery methods and knife skills (commercial cookery and hospitality students only), and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) training. This Workplace Engagement Program involves practical training and assessment which will be described in a written agreement known as a Memorandum of Understanding.

5 Industry Placement Program (IP) Industry Placement allows students to experience employment in the hospitality industry firsthand. Practical experience helps them to relate their theory to practice, while developing key competencies, valuable industry networks and future employment prospects along the way. In our Vocational programs, students have six to eight months included within their course to undertake full-time work. As this is part of their course, international students have no limitations on the hours they can work. All students undertaking their placement in Australia receive full award wages during this period. Industry Placement offers Bachelor of Business students the necessary experience of applying their study to the workplace. With the assistance of our Career Management Team, they are required to participate in the workplace and as part of this process, reflect on organisational culture and their own approach to work. These students will study other subjects alongside their placement, all of which are available online to provide flexibility and work/study/life balance. I picked William Blue because there were a number of industry partners that would allow me to get a job in the industry I wanted, as well as opportunities to gain lots of experience with different events. 6 Purpose Higher Education Vocational Programs Timing 1 William Blue Dining (WBD) Provides practical training of critical entry-level and operational skills within the college in a secure and supportive framework. In each situation, important softer skills of teamwork, communication, and customer service are introduced and developed. Open to the public, students refine their F & B or culinary skills (Chefs). In Rooms Division, students spend 50 hours assisting the housekeeping departments of Sydney hotels and also learn a fully operational Opera system live in our computer labs. Assessment is undertaken within the practical class. Trimester one and two 2 Workplace Engagement Program (WEP) Designed to provide a workplace context to learning, students undertake unpaid work for a specified period in exchange for on-the job training. There is no practical component to the WEP subject for degree students. Their learning in this area is theoretical and reflective in nature where students consider creating and maintaining a personal brand, the importance of Emotional Intelligence and sound management in the workplace. This program is structured via a written agreement between the Student, the College and the Employer, but flexible enough to fit within the operational imperatives of the company. Assessment is undertaken through direct observation, a quiz, and third party report. Trimester two and three 3 Industry Placement (IP) A significant period of paid employment where students are expected to assimilate their learning in the workplace and reflect on their current and future learning while honing their skills. In many cases students will be able to continue their Industry Placement with the same employer as above. A twelve week period where students will undertake a reduced study load in order to work in the industry. Assessment will be through a workplace report, and presentation to a college panel reflecting on application of learnt skills in the workplace and mapping of career path for the future. A minimum 26 week period where the student dedicates their time to employment to undertake hours in the workforce.
