(Oligochaeta, Tubificidae) from the mountainous region of the Crimea (Department of Zoology of the Kharkov Zooveterinary Institute) The fauna of aquatic oligochaetes ( Oligochaeta) of the Crimea has not been studied at all. The discovery in the Crimea of a specimen of the North American genus Mesoporodrilus has only been mentioned in the literature ( Lastochkin, 1937). In , the author of this paper collected material on oligochaetes in different areas of the Crimea. Among the specimens collected, we found a new species of tubificids from the genus Rhyacodrilus. It is described below. Rhyacodrilus tauricus Dembitsky sp. n. (see fig.) The prostomium is short and obtuse. The segments do not have secondary rings. Intersegmental furrow 2/3 is indistinct. There are 2-3 capillary setae up to 350 µ in length in each of the dorsal bundles up to segment XL.- Together with the capillary setae, the segments in the preclitellar region each bear 2-3 flabellate setae SEC 5-25 (2/78)

4 p in length, with thin outer teeth of equal length with lyre-shaped ends, the distal tooth slightly thinner than the proximal one and 5-7 intermediate denticles. The flabellate setae beyond the clitellum are of a different form; they are distally curved, with a shorter and thinner distal tooth. The setae in the dorsal-bundles of the last 6-7 segments are forked, with a very long proximal tooth positioned at an obtuse angle to the short distal one. The ventral bundles of the preclitellar region contain up to 7 forked setae p in length, with a longer distal tooth. The bundles of segment X consist of one spermathecal seta p in length, with a very thin distal tooth almost 3 times as long as the proximal one. Segments IX and XII each bear 1-2 setae which are similar to the spermathecal ones in size and form. The locomotory setae of segment XI are replaced by monodont penial ones iu in length and distributed 5-6 to a bundle. The ventral bundles of the postclitellar region consist of up to 5 setae with teeth of approximately equal length; those in the posterior region each consist of 1-2 setae with a shorter and thinner distal tooth. The pharynx extends to dissepiment 3/4. Massive oesophageal glands are found in segments IV-VI. The chloragogen tissue of the intestine begins in segment VI. The blood is yellow. There are no hearts. The dorsal vessel beats in the region of the clitellum. The postseptale of the anterior nephridium is found in segment XII. The body cavity éontàins a mass of granular coelomocytes p in diameter.

5 The clitellum occupies 1/3 of segment X to segment XII, and is weakly developed on the ventral side. The spermathecal pores are located on segment X in the line of ventral setae near intersegmental furrow 9/10. The male pores are found on segment XI in the line of ventral setae, in front of them. Female pores are not observed. Paired testes extend from dissepiment 9/10, and are located in segment X. Paired ovaries are found on the posterior wall of dissepiment 10/11. Paired sperm funnels (dorsoventral diameter 73 p) are found on the anterior wall of dissepiment 10/11. The vasa deferentia are short and not convoluted; they penetrate the posterior wall of the atrial ampulla where the atrial duct branches out (height of ampulla 94,p, width 77 p, thickness of muscular layer 4-5 p, thickness of epithelial layer 21 p, thickness of layer of prostatic cells 43 µ). We were unable to trace where the vasa deferentia open into the atrial cavity. The atrial duct is conical, extensible and functions like a penis (length 73 p, width of proximal part 40 p, thickness of walls up to 18 p, lumen approximately 6 p). Paired spermathecae are located in segment X; they do not connect with the intestine. The ampulla is spherical (1$5 µ in diameter), the efferent duct is not clearly defined, i.e. the epithelium of the spermatheca in the region adjacent to the excretory aperture forms characteristic thickenings (up to 43 µ). The seminal vesicles are unpaired; the anterior one extends from dissepiment 9/10 and occupies segment IX, and the posterior one extends from dissepiment 10/11 and ends in segment XIX. The ovisac extends into segment XXI.

Material: Crimea, eastern Ulu-Uzent R., clay shales, 21 July 1972, 1 specimen; same location, siltedlimestone with plant detritus, 22 July 1972, 2 specimens (1 mature); Sotera R., silted_limestone, 13 August 1973, 6 specimens; Derekoi R., silted pebble, 4 August 1973, 1 specimen; Khustabash R., shale with sand, 1 August 1973, 11 specimens (2 mature, including holotype). Holotype (series of sections) is stored at the Zoological Museum of Moscow University, Inv. No Rhyacodrilus tauricus sp. n. is distinguished from all the known species of the genus by the presence of spermathecal setae and the penetration of the posterior wall of the atria by the vasa deferentia. It resembles the Balkan Rhyacodrilus punctatus Hrabé, 1931 in the shape of the dorsal flabellate setae of the preclitellar region (Hrabé, 1931, 1973). The differences of these species are given in the table. The author expresses his sincere gratitude to N.L. Sokolskaya for examining the specimens and manuscript, and contributing her comments.
