There are various methods for the determination of iodine value, such as the methods of Hubl, Kaufmann, Margosches, Woburn, Hanus and Wijs. methods are complicated, laborious and require reagents These which are not always available, making the determinations of iodine value, in industrial conditions, rather difficult. Lately, more and more often, the iodine value is determined by a refractometric method based on the functional relation between iodine value and the refractive index. As is already known, whale oil is characterized by a great variety of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, In which the number of carbon atoms may be as high as 24. 4 vary from one to six. It is impossible to evolve a single, universal formula for calculation of the iodine value. Each type of oil must be analyzed individually. A whale oil produced from various industrial toothed whale species was used in our experiments. Samples of commercial batches of whale oil (71 samples of tèchnical grade and 20 samples of sperm oil) delivered by tankers from the Antarctic to Odessa, were analyzed during this series of experiments. The iodine value was determined by the official method, using the Hubl reagent. The refractive index was calculated using an IRF-22 type refractometer with an accuracy of From the experimental data, a relation between the refractive index :..and the iodine value has been established. The coefficient of correlation is for technical grade oil and for sperm oil. The relation between these indices is linear the analytical expression of which has the general equation y=a+bx. Empirical formulas for the r functional relation between the iodine value and the refractive index were established from the experimental data. For the technical grade oiz9the iodine number equals n and for sperm oil it is n, where , 0.605, , are coefficients obtained mathematically. For the technical grade oil, n represents the last two digits of the refractive index measured at 250C with an accuracy of , while for the sperm oiln represents the last three digits of the refractive index measured at 250C.

Statistical analysis of the experimental data did not revealsignifibant differences between the arithmetic means of values obtained either by the Hubl method or the refractometric method (p> 0.1). For the determination of iodine values we recommend the refractometric method as a rapid method which reduces the duration of a determination from 3 days to 15 or 20 minutes.
