Black & Veatch has helped Anglian Water with an innovative biosolids recycling strategy based on energy self-sufficient treatment centres that reduce the dependency on fossil fuels by maximising green, renewable energy from biogas. At Cotton Valley in Milton Keynes, England, Black & Veatch implemented Thermal Hydrolysis for the production of enhanced treated biosolids suitable for recycling to agricultural land. What s more, the combined heat and power units at the site convert biogas to meet the heat requirements of the hydrolysis process and generate enough electricity to run the treatment works. CREATIVELY CONQUERING CONSTRAINTS Black & Veatch provided successful environmental design and construction for our client, the Environment Agency, creating improved flood protection for 16,000 properties. Our work was shortlisted for the Environment Agency National Capital Programme Management Service Efficiency Award through realisation savings of 1.1 million by constructive challenge throughout design and construction. We set out to deliver an environmentally-led design, turning constraints associated with existing rail infrastructure and nature conservation sites into an opportunity to contribute to sustainable construction through working with the contractor to employ innovative use of Trenchmix technology instead of traditional piling. 5 MIND MUSCLE Pages 6-7: Bundamba Advanced Water Treatment Plant, Ipswich, Queensland, Australia FAST-TRACKED, SAFE DELIVERY Drawing on our global resources and knowledge base, we redefined industry benchmarks for schedule and logistics at Bundamba. The site for the advanced water treatment plant was a green field just 10 months before the delivery of first water and 18 months before delivering two phases and 66 MLD of high quality recycled water. We managed the design, construction and procurement management. The Bundamba Alliance, featuring Black & Veatch, Theiss and the Queensland Government, used the design-build delivery model for fast-tracked delivery of the Bundamba AWTP, part of the largest recycled water scheme in the Southern Hemisphere. The facility provides an innovative, long-term solution to the South East Queensland water shortage through the safe delivery of a world class asset in record time.
