INTRODUCTION These guidelines provide assistance to staff seeking academic promotion at Curtin Sarawak from level A to level B as covered by the Academic Promotions Policy and the Academic Promotions Procedures. It is important that you carefully consider your readiness for promotion prior to application. You may like to have an informal chat with your Head of Department about your readiness prior to undergoing the formal process. 2. REQUIREMENTS FOR PROMOTION In order to be promoted you must demonstrate that: You hold a higher degree (e.g. Masters) OR have made significant progress towards a doctoral qualification; and You have performed at a high level in either Teaching & Learning OR Research/Creative Works as applied to level A duties; and You have performed at a satisfactory level in Service and either Teaching & Learning OR Research as applied to level B duties. 3. PROCESS 3.1 PERFORMANCE REVIEW FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT Before applying for promotion, make sure that you meet all the requirements. The PMP Review process provides a useful vehicle for developing your career and preparing for promotion. In preparing work plans, you and your HOD need to discuss and set the types of duties, objectives and support needed to prepare you for promotion to level B. The Performance Reviews can help you to assess your progress toward your goal. DUTIES In setting duties through your work plan, you will have duties that are typical of a level A academic. These may include duties such as: lecturing; tutoring; demonstrating; clinical supervision; fieldwork and associated activities; conducting research or creative works; activities that develop your area of expertise; and contributing to the area in which you teach or research. Please note: It is not necessary for you to do all these duties. To prepare for promotion, however, you also need to undertake some duties at level B. 4 undertaking some unit co-ordination; undergraduate teaching; increasing the scope and depth of your research; and contributing to the functioning of your Department or School. OBJECTIVES In your plan, it is important to develop two or three objectives that focus on the quality of the work you need to do for promotion (e.g. excellence in teaching and learning), or the progress of your work (e.g. progress goals for your PhD or a research project). YOUR DEVELOPMENT Preparation for promotion should also include support for the development of necessary skills and qualifications for promotion. This may include support, for example, for you to: complete an appropriate postgraduate qualification; further progress your PhD studies; or develop your teaching or research skills. 3.2 APPLYING FOR PROMOTION TO LEVEL B WHEN TO APPLY Staff at level A step 8 are encouraged to apply for promotion prior to their increment date. However, you may request to be considered for promotion prior to reaching step 8 where you believe that you meet the necessary requirements for promotion. The process is the same in both cases. Once you feel that you have a body of work that demonstrates your skills and contribution as appropriate to level A and some level B duties, you need to request a meeting with your Head of Department or equivalent to review your performance and to determine whether or not you meet the requirements for promotion to level B. You can request that this meeting occur at the time of your annual PMP meeting or at another time. The performance review for promotion meeting must be held with your Head of Department. You can request that the Dean of School also be present at the performance review for promotion meeting. Guidelines for Applicants: Academic Promotion to Level B 2012 Page 4 of 7

5 PRIOR TO THE MEETING 1. Application for Promotion to Level B form Prepare the Application for Promotion to Level B form and submit it to your Head of Department or equivalent, and where appropriate, your Dean of School. The application form provides an overview of your qualifications, the criteria you are addressing and any EEO considerations that need to be taken into account. This allows the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor to make a fair on-balance judgement of outputs and outcomes achieved. Other application documents o You believe should be taken into account when your application is considered. Prepare the following documents to bring to the meeting: The Work Plan that is to be reviewed; The previous year s completed PMP documentation (Plan and Review) where available; and Any key pieces of evidence that your Head/s may not be aware of that show your performance (e.g. an evaluate survey, acceptance of a conference or journal paper). You do not need to prepare extensive documentation, nor do you need to write a case for promotion. 3. Examples of types of evidence for promotion criteria Some examples of the types of evidence that could be used to demonstrate achievement of the promotion criteria as applied to duties of the appropriate level are as follows: Teaching & Learning For duties such as lecturing and tutoring: High or significantly improved levels of student satisfaction; Demonstration of good quality teaching practice; Demonstration of reflective practice (scholarship) that results in improvements. For duties such as unit co-ordination: Demonstration of sound or innovative learning experiences, assessment and feedback; Demonstration of reflective practice (scholarship) that results in improvements to the unit and its design; Demonstration of good quality assessment practices. 6 Research/Creative Works Quality in research/creative works will be determined through such evidence as: Quality and standing of journals; Quality and impact of research; Editorial Boards of scholarly/professional journals; Originality in ideas, techniques or methods; Types and value of grants/commissions received. Service Service is defined as the contribution that you make to your area such as: Attendance at staff meetings; Working parties; Committees; Area activities; Public relations activities (e.g. high school visits, career nights, open day). AT THE MEETING At the meeting, you and your Head of Department or equivalent will review and discuss your performance over the past year(s), complete the Performance Review for the year and review your other application documents. AFTER THE MEETING After the meeting, your Head of Department or equivalent in consultation with your Dean of School will complete their assessment and recommendation in the Application for Academic Promotion to Level B form and return a copy to you. You are required to attach the completed form, with their recommendation, to the current plan and review, and the plan and review from the previous PMP (where available), and forward these to the HR Manager. HR Manager will check that the performance review for promotion process has been carried out correctly. Where correct process has been followed, your application will be forwarded to the Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor for a final decision. Within 2 months of the performance review for promotions discussion, the Pro Vice-Chancellor or equivalent will advise the following people of the outcome of your application, whether successful or unsuccessful: You; Your Head of Department; Your Dean of School ; and The HR Manager. 7 Promotion will be effective from the first day of the following month after the date of approval by the Pro Vice- Chancellor. Where promotion has not been approved, the PVC will provide you with written feedback on the strengths of your performance and where you need to improve for promotion to take place. Your HOD will then indicate how they will support you to meet these requirements. This could include providing you with opportunities to undertake some duties at the B level, mentorship, development opportunities and so forth. 4.
