College & Career Readiness: MCHS & parent partnership for student success 11/5/2014
Agenda What is college & career readiness? How can I help my student prepare for college? How can my student explore career options? How to earn college credits for free or low cost. Danielle Wright - ISAC
College Readiness Is being prepared for any college/education/ training experience. Measured by the student s math and English skills to qualify for and earn credit in an introductory college class Trip to Loyola
College Readiness Measured by: ACT score benchmarks English 18 Math 22 Social Sciences 22 Science 23 Placement testing
Career Readiness Is a high school graduate who has English and math skills to be successful in job training or education for a chosen career.
Why does it matter? All high school graduates will need additional education/training to have options in the job market. Nearly 8 in 10 future job openings in the next 10 years will require education or training.
How can I help my student?
College Visit local college campuses to see what the school has to offer. Discuss class options at registration to prepare for admission. Explore options to earn college credits through MCHS.
College Openly discuss options based on distance, career interests and family finances. Attend college fairs. Talk to your student s counselor to ensure everyone is on the same page.
Career Talk about careers and skills of family members and friends. Consider arranging a job shadow with a family member (or friend) for your teen. Encourage your student to take classes that prepare for careers.
How can MCHS help my student?
Career Job shadows are being arranged for Juniors and Seniors based on career interests. Mr. Martins assists with coordinating the local business opportunities with Mr. Rode to notifies students. Job shadows to date include Marengo Police Department, U-line, Prairie Bank.
Career Career & Technical Education (CTE) classes allow students to explore careers and learn a variety of skills.
Career Students begin exploring career clusters and careers as freshmen. Tools to use: Career Cruising MCC College & Career Ready McHenry County College & Career Readiness
Career & College Students are able to earn college credits & train for career options while in high school. MCHS has agreements with MCC. Dual credit = student takes class at MCHS and earns MCC credit (for free$). Articulated credit = student takes class at MCHS (free) and must earn a C or higher in a class at MCC to receive the credit.
