Orient yourself All full-time students attend SOAR, an on-campus orientation, before beginning classes at Heartland. SOAR enables you to learn about the College and helps you get acquainted with campus. During this orientation, assessment testing is also done to ensure that you are placed in appropriate level courses, increasing your likelihood of success. The SOAR process is easy: Register for a SOAR session at Attend a SOAR session. Walk out with your class schedule. Part-time students can complete online SOAR by visiting Be advised Heartland students are assigned an advisor during orientation. Your advisor stays with you throughout your time at Heartland. You ll meet with them every semester to plan your course of study. They can also assist you with transferring to a four-year school or help you choose a career path that s right for you.

Not just another number You won t disappear in a class here. Instructors at Heartland know their students by name. There aren t any massive lecture halls and your instructors will never have to use a microphone to teach a class. With a student-teacher ratio of 19 to 1 you ll be sure to get plenty of attention. Sure, this means you won t get away with skipping classes, but it also means your instructor s first focus is YOU!

Thinking ahead Students who qualify can begin taking courses at Heartland for college credit while they are still in high school with the Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment program. It s a great way to be introduced to a college classroom setting and get credits that can transfer to the college of your choice. If you are interested in starting classes while still in high school you must fill out the dual enrollment form. For more information, visit the Prospective Students page on the Heartland Web site and click on take HCC classes while still in high school.

Smart money You know Heartland is an affordable option, but until you look closer, you might not realize just how affordable we are. No matter how reasonable tuition is, though, everyone could use a little help. That s why Heartland offers a variety of options to make a college education within reach, including: Financial aid Over 70 scholarship awards from the HCC Foundation Work study Tuition payment plans Community Scholars program Student loans Private four-year college $25,143 Public four-year college $6,585 Heartland Community College $2,760 * Figures accurate as of presstime.

Beyond the books Learning also happens outside the classroom. With student clubs, organizations and intramurals, there are plenty of opportunities to learn teamwork, take leadership roles or just explore new interests. Enjoy the entertainers that perform on campus, expand your mind by attending the Hear & Know show and the Your World Exposed speaker series, or even spend a semester studying abroad.

Be a Hawk In a few short years, Heartland Community College has made its mark on the college athletic scene. As members of the National Junior College Athletic Association and Mid-West Athletic Conference, HCC fields baseball, softball, men s and women s soccer teams. Even with a young program, Heartland has already enjoyed a national championship in women s softball. And the baseball and soccer teams have made post-season appearances. The campus will soon include a new state-of-the-art sports park that will house Heartland athletics, as well as the CornBelters professional baseball team.

Education that works with your life We know that you have a lot going on. So choose from these options: daytime, nighttime, online and hybrid classes to build a schedule that works for you. Heartland also has campuses in Pontiac and Lincoln, ensuring your commute will never be too long. Lincoln area residents can take advantage of the Lincoln 101 program that enables students to complete the first year of general education transfer requirements* at the Lincoln site on the square in downtown Lincoln. Pontiac students can also complete their 1st year of general education requirements at the Pontiac site. So now you don t have to drive far to go far! *for students at or near the college level

Learn on the latest Heartland prides itself in offering the latest technology to our students. The technology in all of the classrooms enables instructors to really bring the subject matter to life. Wi-fi access on campus allows you to pick your favorite spot to get homework done.

Easy to be green The Workforce Development Center (WDC), completed in fall 2007, is the first state-funded green building. It features natural light, furnishings made with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and a heating/cooling system regulated by 180 geothermal wells. The building houses an estimated 25 associate degree and certificate programs. The building includes unique learning spaces like digital media, welding, CISCO networking and electronics labs. The Green Institute houses the Pregracke Exhibit, which is named for Heartland s 2009 Distinguished Alumnus and the founder of the not-for-profit Living Lands & Waters (LL&W) organization. The Institute provides education and resources for community members on sustainability and environmental topics. The interactive Pregracke Exhibit illustrates the efforts of LL&W and the significant achievements that individuals can accomplish. Keep looking Heartland s campus is constantly changing. Additional campus development has been ongoing for the last several years. New construction on campus includes a larger child development lab, a community education center, a fitness and recreation center, an additional instructional building and a student center addition. These expansions to campus will include learning spaces as well as facilities available for the community.

High Schools in Heartland's district HCC serves District 540, a geographic corridor that extends along I-55 in Illinois roughly from Pontiac to Lincoln. Campus locations in Normal, Lincoln and Pontiac make the College an accessible option for all District residents. 14 Moving on Heartland graduates have attended over 500 different colleges and universities across the country. University reports show that Heartland graduates do as well as, or better than, students who started at four-year schools. If a bachelor s degree is your goal, Heartland can help you take that next step. While Heartland Community College does not offer four-year degree programs, HCC has formal agreements with several colleges and universities to help students meet their educational goals. Career Prep If you plan to enter the workforce after completing a two-year program of study, Heartland is a smart choice. Specialized skills for getting the edge in the workplace can be learned one class at a time, or students may earn applied degrees and certificates. Studies show that individuals with two-year degrees earn an average of 36% more than those with just a high school diploma.

Applying to Heartland During your junior or senior year of high school, complete an application. You can ask for an application from your high school counselor, drop by any Heartland campus to pick one up or apply online at application. There is no application fee. Have your high school submit your transcripts directly to Heartland or submit a copy of your GED certificate scores if you are a GED recipient.
