PLANNING FOR WHAT HAPPENS AFTER GRADUATION!

What Kinds of Colleges Are There? 2 year colleges (Ivy Tech, Vincennes University, Lincoln Trail College). 4 year colleges (ISU, IU, Purdue, St. Mary of the Woods).

College degrees Associates degree - 2 year degree (An Associate of Applied Science or Art probably will NOT transfer to a Bachelors program.) (Radiologic Technician, Auto Mechanic) Bachelors degree - 4 year degree (You do NOT need an Associates degree to get a Bachelors degree.) (Teacher, Manager, Journalist) Masters degree year degree (You MUST have a Bachelors degree first!!) (Counselor, Business Executive, Librarian) Doctoral degree year degree (You MUST have a Bachelors degree first!!) (Doctor, Lawyer, Professor/Researcher)

College Lingo Tuition - the cost of attending classes For public colleges - ~$3,000 - $9,000 For private colleges - ~$10,000 - $40,000 Room and board - the cost of living on campus For most colleges - ~$7,000 Subsidized Loan - they do not charge you interest until you graduate (If you have to get a loan, this is the kind you want) Unsubsidized Loan - they begin charging interest as soon as you take the loan

College-Bound Checklist Take the SAT s or ACT s Apply to colleges Apply for scholarships Complete a FAFSA (January or February) Visit colleges of interest

SAT s Dates: Oct. 5, Nov. 2, Dec. 7, Jan. 25, Mar. 8, May 3, June 7 Remember - Registration deadlines are more than 1 month before test dates. Cost: $51 School Code: Web site: The SAT tests English, Math, and Writing.

ACT s Dates: Oct. 26, Dec. 14, Feb. 8, Apr. 12, June 14 Remember - Registration deadlines are more than 1 month before test dates. Cost: $52.50 School Code: Web site: Register for the ACT Plus Writing if not taking the SAT The ACT tests Reading, Math, Science, English, and Writing.

Applying for College Most applications are very simple and easy to complete. Ask for help if you need it. Some colleges require essays. Some colleges require recommendations. Apply online - Make sure you remember the application fee. You must notify Mrs. Martin when you apply or you must request your transcript on E-Transcript at Most colleges (except for Ivy Tech) require transcripts.

Applying for College... Before Thanksgiving, apply to at least one safe college. Apply to ISU no later than November 5 you are eligible for scholarships only if you are accepted before Dec. 1! Do NOT wait for college sports recruiters to call you, apply anyway! - You and your parents should call them yourself!

What if I don t know where I want to go to college yet? Complete at least one application for a safe college anyway. Research colleges online!! ( Visit colleges of interest!!

What Do Colleges Look For? Difficult classes during the Senior year Difficult classes throughout high school (Core 40 or Academic Honors) SAT or ACT scores School activities and volunteer activities

Applying for Scholarships Any paper application that requires information from the counselor must be mailed by the counselor. I will do my best to get all scholarship applications in on time. But, if you do not get the application to me at least ONE WEEK before the deadline, there is no guarantee that it will meet the deadline!!

Finding Scholarships Scholarships received in the guidance office will be ed to parents and students, posted on My Big Campus, and put on the Counselors Corner on the website at: Check with your employer and your parent's employers. Contact the Admissions Office at the college you want to attend and ask them about potential scholarships. Search the Web at home or at the library.

Great Web Sites for Scholarship Searches!! /ssrchtop.html

NCAA Clearinghouse Interested in a sports scholarship? - you must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse for NCAA colleges. Make sure you qualify certain SAT scores and course work are required. Web Address: Cost: Approximately $60 -$75 Ask Mrs. Martin to send your transcript to the NCAA Clearinghouse or request it on

Don t Get Scammed! Never pay any amount of money to obtain scholarship information. If it really is a scholarship, they won t require you to pay money to get it. Watch out for companies who claim you have already won or ask for credit card, Social Security, or checking account numbers. Do not give these companies personal information. If you re not sure, check with Mrs. Martin!

FAFSA The MOST important form you will complete. It is the application for state and federal Financial Aid. Must apply in January or February to get State Aid (includes the 21st Century Scholarship). You must use the FAFSA form. It is best to wait until January to complete this form due to more accurate 2012 tax information. You can estimate, but have to update later if you do. If you plan to attend a private college, you must also fill out a CSS Profile.

Visiting Colleges Before scheduling your visit, clear the date with Mrs. Martin. You cannot go on Fridays, before holidays, or the same day as another student. You must have good attendance and have taken the SAT, PSAT, or ACT. Turn in a yellow Request for College Day form along with a copy of your confirmation letter, confirmation, or the name of the college representative who schedules your visit. This procedure is required only if you want a college visit on a day when North Central is scheduled to be in session.

What if I don t want to go to college? You may use at least 1 of your college days as a day to career shadow someone, however you must fill out the request form. Apply for jobs and create a resume. Research apprenticeship programs in December and January - These are programs where you work in a certain skill area (like plumbing or carpentry) and you earn money while you learn the trade. Consider the military option, but be careful about making a commitment until you are sure and have discussed it with your family.

MAKE THE MOST OF COLLEGE PLANNING! Visit the guidance office often to: Ask questions! Complete college applications Apply for scholarships and financial aid Use the guidance computer to complete applications online, register for SAT s, search for scholarships, search for apprenticeships, and more!!

ENJOY YOUR SENIOR YEAR!
