5 AMD Changing the Game is one of AMD s signature education initiatives, driven by the AMD Foundation and designed to inspire youth around the world to learn critical science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills by creating video games about social issues. The program fosters collaboration between schools, private industry, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other organizations to advance STEM education in new and innovative ways. AMD Canada specifically supports the AMD Kids Game Development Camp, as well as a Mathletics Competition. With AMD employees acting as ambassadors in AMD Changing the Game initiatives, we remain committed to taking the program to a new level by supporting this enhancement of education using AMD technology. STEM Changing the Game AMD KIDS GAME DEVELOPMENT CAMP For three consecutive years, AMD and the AMD Foundation have funded the AMD Kids Game Development Camp (AKGDC) in collaberation with York University. The camp gives young students the opportunity to construct their own computer games from start to finish, tapping into their creativity while giving them hands-on training in the most basic of technical computer skills. The camp is facilitated through the help of near-peer mentors, volunteer leaders who have participated in the camp in previous years and who provide fundamental instruction to the campers. AMD Canada hosts a field day for the participants in the camp, giving them a rare opportunity to visit the AMD Markham campus to showcase their games to AMD employees. Markham employees mingle with the AKGDC participants Matt Skynner, AMD Canada General Manager, assesses the games developed by the participants in the AKGDC York University is proud to collaborate with the AMD Kids Game Development Camp. 6 CHANGING THE GAME SUCCESS STORY: STUDENT OF AMD KIDS GAME DEVELOPMENT CAMP RETURNS AS DEDICATED MENTOR With all that she has been able to do through the AMD Kids Game Development Camp, there is no telling what the future holds for Thadchayani Kupendiran. As an AMD Kids Game Development Camp participant in 2011 and 2012, she returned to the 2013 camp as an influential mentor. Thadchayani s case is testament to how the AMD Kids Game Development Camp offers a needed outlet for young students to have an arena to develop games. She has a passion for game development and has already participated in a showcase run through Dames Making Games (DMG), an organization dedicated to providing a community where women can connect and share their digital gaming creations with likeminded individuals. This past September, Thadchayani started an advanced diploma program in Game Programming at Toronto s George Brown College, helping her to further her already impressive skills. Thadchayani acting as a mentor at the 2013 AKGDC AMD GoGreen: AMD Canada FACILITY CONSERVATION IN 2013 AMD Go Green is the flagship environmental program to engage employees and demonstrate results around sustainability. AMD Canada has been an instrumental contributor to the Go Green program achieving impressive facility conservation and commuter program milestones. I hope to use my spare time during school to intern with a prominent computer technology company and really put my passion to work with some practical experience. The AMD camp was a rare chance for girls like me to realize a passion for gaming and pursue what I love, boosting me up farther than I could ever have imagined. I now have the skills, confidence and determination to pursue my dream job. AMD Canada had an 8% reduction in electricity consumption from , which helped save ~$330k USD, 2.56 million kwh, and ~123 metric tons of CO2e emissions. The site s greenhouse gas emissions from operations have decreased up to 68% since In the area of diverting waste from the landfill, AMD Canada has been among the highest performing AMD sites globally, with 76% of waste diverted (by weight) from the landfill in The impressive waste diversion results were realized through initiatives like an organics program that composted ~20 metric tons of organic waste, and e-waste program that recycled ~90 metric tons of retired electronics and metals. AMD s Canadian site in Markham also saved ~2.5 million liters of fresh water by not using landscaping irrigation at all in % Reduction in Electricity Consumption, which helped save: Thadchayani Kupendiran YORK REGION MATHLETICS COMPETITION Jaye Gordon (AMD Canada Public Affairs Liaison), Matt Skynner (AMD Canada General Manager), Shirley Freek (York University Division of Advancement) & Thadchayani Kupendiran (2011 & 2012 Camper, 2013 Mentor of AMD Kids Game Development Camp and current programming student at George Brown College) ~$330k 2.56m KWh 123t of CO 2 COMMUTER PROGRAM Thomas Chong, President of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), displays the grand prize for the AMD 2013 Mathletics Competition AMD Mathletics is a competition designed to create a passion for the application of mathematics in solving day-to-day scientific and engineering problems.
