2 Selective Service Registration Selective Service NOW accepts early submission of registration information by 17-year old men. Students can submit information to the Selective Service at the age 17 years and 3 months old and be automatically registered when they turn 18. Under federal law, virtually all men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18 th birthday. It is your legal and civic responsibility, in fact, it s the law. To stay eligible for programs and benefits connected to registration, such as college loans and grants, scholarships, government jobs, and job training you MUST register for the selective service. The fastest way to register is online at Career Connections Court Reporting & Captioning Learn what it takes to be a court reporter or broadcast captioner through the Information Reporting Technology program. Talk to experienced professionals to find out what they really do. Learn about academic requirements and how to get started. You can even try court reporting with hands-on-demonstrations. Register at Carleton Liberal Arts Experience (CLAE) A week of exciting academic exploration for high school sophomores. July 6-12, 2013 Carlton College is honored to host the Carleton Liberal Arts Experience (CLAE), an inspiring summer program for the best and brightest college-bound students from high schools across the country. Fifty current high school sophomores are selected to participate in this all-expense-paid weeklong program on Carlton s campus. An ideal CLAE student is one who: shows academic potential and achievement, is in the top 25 percent of his/her class, is taking or plans to take an advanced curriculum, including honor and be involved in his/her school or local community. Applications are available in the guidance office and are due by April 1, Murray State University Cyber Cave The mission of Cyber Cave is to expose high school students to computer and networking technologies through hands-on, interactive activities. During Cyber Cave Academy, students are introduced to the college atmosphere through residential housing, campus dining and other on-campus functions. For the first time ever, a student has the opportunity to earn up to three college credit hours at Murray State University by attending First-year Cyber Cave Academy. Due to the nature of the camp, students must be going into their junior or senior year of high school following the summer academy. There are three dates to choose from, June 9 14, June or July 7 12, There is a $ camp fee that pays for room and board and includes all meals for the week. Scholarships are available. 3 Lion s Pride Project 2013 Summer Youth Leadership Summit June 5 7, 2013 Lindenwood University, St. Charles, MO Lindenwood University s Nonprofit Administration Degree Program will offer its fourth annual innovative summer youth initiative The Lion s pride Summer Youth Leadership Project. The three-day conference is designed to recognize high school students who possess an affinity for helping others and who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills. By engaging in the Lion s Pride Project, students will develop a deeper understanding of their rolls in social change and become connected to specific opportunities to act in service of others. University of Tulsa Summer Camps Tulsa University Department of Film Studies presents Summer Residential Camps in Screenwriting and Filmmaking for high school students, from entering freshman to graduating seniors. Screenwriting: July 7-13, 2013 Students will immerse themselves in the art and craft of screenwriting for an exciting week with Michael Wright, Director of the University of Tulsa s Creative Writing program. After a full week of intensive exploration of the craft, along with stimulating group activities and recreation, each student will create his/her own short screenplay for a public reading. Filmmaking: July 13-20, 2013 From understanding the shot, to breaking down the script and finally production, each student will have an intensive experience in creating his/her own film with a screening of the final results under the guidance of filmmaker Erin McHenry on state-of-heart production and post-production, hardware and software. Workshop activity will be supplemented by evening screenings and recreation. The fee for each camp is $750 and includes housing, meals, materials and recreational activities. 4 Teen Institute for Prevention Leaders Join teen leaders from over 30 high schools in the Greater St. Louis Area for this informative, dynamic, and empowering retreat. Since 1980, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse-St. Louis Area has been conducting Teen Institute for Prevention Leaders. TI is a powerful, 4-day seminar designed to train high school students to prevent substance abuse among their peers. Teen Institute will be held June 4-7, You must commit for the full four-day retreat. TI is held in Dittmer, MO which is about 30 minutes from St. Louis. The $300 fee covers lodging, meals, all materials used in the trainings, and optional transportation. For an application and more information, see Mrs. Johnson in the guidance office. University of Missouri Mini Medical School The University of MO offers an exciting and informative summer experience for high school students interested in a career in medicine. MU s High School Mini Medical School is a one-week program that gives students a preview of life as an MU medical student. They program will include hands-on experience in anatomy, microbiology, and clinical skills. An introduction to MU s innovative problem-based learning curriculum and seminars on college and medical school entrance and medical-school life. 5 Commonwealth Honors Academy The Commonwealth Honors Academy is an exciting, challenging three-week academic and personal growth program for outstanding high school students who will have completed their junior year this year. Students will be selected from the commonwealth and surrounding region. CHA offers students the chance to develop lasting relationships with other enthusiastic, energetic students with high intellectual capacities. There is no cost to the student other than transportation to the campus and spending money. The three-week program runs from June 8 June 29, Applicants must have a 3.5GPA and at least a 25 on the ACT. Launch of StudentAid.gov and Social Media Sites Federal Student Aid has launched some exciting new tools to help students through the financial aid process. StudentAid.gov is a new website that provides straightforward and easy-to-understand information about planning and paying for college. The site combines content and interactive tools from several ED websites. As a mobile-optimized website, StudentAid.gov is fully accessible on tablets and smartphones. StudentAid.gov offers more than just information in an easy-to-read format; it also features videos and info graphics, scattered throughout the site, to help answer frequently asked questions about financial aid. A full set of videos can be found at while their full collection of info graphics is at In addition to StudentAid.gov, Federal Student Aid also has launched a twitter feed at and a Facebook page at to offer alternative options to learn about the student aid process. They also host a monthly interactive session called #AskFAFSA Office Hours, which takes place via Twitter account. Keep on eye on Twitter feed and/or blog for an announcement of the next Office Hours. ACT Prep Workshop Workshop will include: Explanation of the ACT, Diagnostic and intensive reviews of English, Mathematics, Reading & Science sections, overview of the writing portion of the ACT.
