2 Aims of the Physical Education Department 1. To educate every pupil about their bodies and how to enjoy participating in sport. 2. To encourage every pupil to perform to their Personal Best. 3. Manage classes of pupils to allow for every child to learn to their full potential. 4. Offer a wide variety of opportunities for pupils to experience within lessons. 5. Offer a wide variety of opportunities for pupils within the extra curricular curriculum. 6. Deliver GCSE pupils to a high standard allowing those pupils to have the opportunity to achieve grades which are suitable to their own ability. 7. Take Test Valley into the public eye through teams and individuals performing to the best of their abilities in a suitable and sporting manner. 8. Encourage pupils to participate in sport outside of school. 9. Encourage pupils to continue to participate in sport on leaving Test Valley School. 2

3 Start of the lesson: Staff are expected to: Expectations of Staff Within Lessons Arrive on time for the lesson. Take a register. Ensure pupils change quickly and quietly for their activity. Collect valuables in the valuables box. Organise pupils to assist in carrying / preparing equipment. Inform the pupils of the aims of the lesson. During the lesson: Staff are expected to: Listen to pupils and guide them. Respect and support pupils and other staff. Allow pupils to learn and develop by asking questions pitched at various levels. Keep the pupils on task and working to the best of their capabilities. Encourage a positive atmosphere within the lesson. Encourage and direct pupils into taking on different roles such as official, coach or player. Have a good understanding of the subject area and how each lesson fits into the scheme of work. Use departmental lesson plans to deliver each lesson. Allow opportunities for differentiation so pupils feel stretched. End of the lesson: Staff are expected to: Finish the lesson with a plenary at the end of the lesson allowing pupils to recap what they have worked on during the lesson. Organise pupils to assist in carrying / putting away equipment. Get pupils to change quickly and quietly. Get pupils to leave on time. Evaluate and assess pupils at the end of the unit, recording results on registers and cards. Other Requirements: Carry out assessments of pupils for each activity area and record it on the school system. Write reports for pupils as directed by SMT. Engage fully in the provision of extra curricular activities. Maintain the standards expected at all times. 3

4 PE Lesson Expected Contents Every PE lesson is expected to follow the following procedure: The teacher is to clearly state the aims/objectives of the lesson so that pupils are able to state what they are aiming to achieve within the lesson. This can be done at the start of the lesson or after the first drill/exercise if it is being used to draw information from the pupils, but it must happen early within the lesson. Pupils need to re-cap the learning aims from the previous lesson, normally through a question and answer styled approach but pupils can work together to recap before giving the answers. This can happen after the first drill/exercise If the aim of that drill/exercise is to reinforce the previous lessons learning. The lesson must have an appropriate warm up for the activity that is to take place. Pupils should be leading the warm ups to encourage the learning of the major muscle groups and confidence to work with their peers. This can happen before or after the aims/objectives of the current lesson and the re-cap of the previous lesson. Staff are to be giving pupils information on how they can improve their personal National Curriculum (NC) level. This information should then be used by the pupils, within their coaching, to let other pupils know how to achieve higher NC levels. Within every lesson pupils must be encouraged to give quality coaching, (WWW & EBI), to their peers. This will allow for further improved performances and understanding. The coaching system pupils must allow pupils to be gaining knowledge from their peers on how they can improve both their own and others performances and subsequently gain a higher NC level. This can be supported by the teacher with the use of guided Q&A and reinforcement of the aims/objectives of the lesson. Within lessons teachers need to take a supportive Q&A approach, where safety allows, enhancing the use of coaching by the pupils. Pupils must be encouraged to be active in their thinking rather than being given the answers. As a result of the lesson pupils will show a clear understanding of the aims/objectives of that lesson. Time must be allowed throughout the lesson and at the end for pupils to analysis themselves and others at the end of each task and lesson to explain what they achieved and what areas they need to develop to improve their NC level. This can be reached through pupil discussion during and at the end of the lesson. This can be supported through guided questions from the teacher. 4

Change quickly and quietly for their activity. Place any valuable in the valuables box. Assist in carrying / preparing equipment. If not taking part within the lesson pupils are still expected to change into their PE kit and assist with coaching. During the lesson: Pupils are expected to: Listen to staff and other pupils. Respect and support staff and other pupils. Take an active part and make a positive contribution in the lesson both practically and in asking and answering of questions. Stay on task at all times working to the best of their capabilities. Encourage a positive atmosphere within the lesson. Take on different roles such as official, coach or player. End of the lesson: Pupils are expected to: Assist in carrying / putting away equipment. Change quickly and quietly. Be responsible for taking their own kit and valuables with them. Leave on time. Get to their next lesson as quickly as possible. 5

6 Required Kit Pupils are expected to wear Test Valley School Physical Education kit which consists of: Compulsory: Navy blue TV polo shirt. Blue Rugby shirt Navy blue shorts. Navy Blue football socks. Shin pads. Football / rugby boots moulded or with safety rugby studs. Clean non marking trainers. Hair bands for long hair. Head bands for long fringes. Recommended: Towels Under shirts Gum Shields School Beanie hats (Winter) School baseball cap (Summer) 6

7 Lesson Procedures Arrival at Lessons: On arrival pupils are to line up outside the building in alphabetical order in their group. After registering pupils enter the changing rooms and change quickly. Pupils with kit problems are expected to bring a note of explanation from their parent. Kit will then be leant to that pupil and no punishment issued. If a pupil fails to have a note of explanation the department will follow the discipline procedure. If a pupil is unwell or injured they are expected to bring their PE kit and join in the elements of the lesson which they are physically able to do. Within parts of the lesson where they are unable to take part they will be expected to coach or officiate their peers. If a pupil fails to bring kit then the department will follow the discipline procedure. If a pupil is unable to change due to injury they need to bring suitable footwear and outdoor clothing where necessary and are still take part within the lesson through coaching and officiating. Pupils will be given the opportunity to place their valuables in a safe place. It is their own responsibility not to leave valuables in changing areas. Start of lessons: Pupils will be asked to take out/ set up the relevant equipment with suitable supervision at the start of the lesson. When pupils arrive in their teaching area they will be asked to warm up. As pupils learn and understand how to conduct a warm up these will become pupil lead. This places the emphasis on pupils to improve their personal understanding and learn how to lead their peers, developing a variety of approaches and different warm ups. Main Lesson: Pupils will be introduced to the aims of the lesson by their teacher. Pupils will be set drills and tasks to help them develop and refine their skills base. Teachers are encouraged, where possible, to teach through the use of a Question & Answer style approach to encourage guide discovery and a development of thought process amongst the pupils. During lessons emphasis will be placed upon the pupils to work with their peers in the role of coach and where suitable official. When pupils coach each other the recipetant gains through feedback and the reviewer gains a better understanding of the skill for when they next perform it. End of Lessons: The lesson will finish with the teacher recapping what the pupils have been working on and giving the pupils opportunities to answer relevant questions to show the understanding which they have gained. Pupils are expected to help put away and return equipment, under suitable supervision. Pupil change quickly and get to their next lessons. 7

8 GCSE Practical Lessons Expectations: Pupils are to turn up to the practical lesson with the kit required for that activity. Pupils with kit problems are expected to bring a note of explanation from their parent. Kit will then be leant to that pupil and no punishment issued. If a pupil fails to have a note of explanation the department will follow the discipline procedure. If a pupil is unwell or injured they are expected to bring their PE kit and join in the elements of the lesson which they are physically able to do. Emphasis is placed upon pupils within the lesson to take on different roles such as coach and official as well as taking responsibility for their own and peers learning by leading warm up and drills. Within every lessons pupils are expected to give to their full potential both for themselves and for the other members of the group to be allowed to perform to their full potential. Pupils must write up each practical lesson using the PE Departments write up sheet and after completing the unit of work it to their lead teacher. Failure to do so will result in the departments discipline procedure being followed. 8

9 GCSE Theory Lessons Theory Lessons: Pupils following GCSE PE will have a 1 hour theory lesson every week. Pupils must come ready for their lessons with suitable writing materials, their PE file and their revision notes. After each theory lesson pupils are set the homework of writing up revision notes from the lesson. Failure to complete homework or bring their file or revision notes to the lesson will result in the following of the PE Departments sanctions. If a pupil is absent from the lesson they must catch up in their own time. All theory lessons are on MOODLE and pupils must write up their lesson notes and revision notes before the next theory lesson. Pupils must talk to their teacher if they do not understand elements of the course. Pupils should aim to attend study clubs towards the end of their course to help them revise before their exam. 9

10 Discipline Procedures Core: The PE Department will follow the whole school discipline procedure. Pupils forgetting kit for a lesson will: - On the first occasion be set a 15minute detention. - On the second occasion, in the same half term, be set a 15minute detention and placed on department report. - Pupils will be set 15 minute detentions thereafter unless the teacher considers the pupil is not responding and as such may issue a 30 minute detention. - If it is a regular occurrence then the HoD will be informed. - If the problem persists SLT will be consulted and parents contacted where necessary. GCSE: The PE Department will follow the whole school discipline procedure. For practical lessons the procedure is the same as for core PE. 11 Physical Education Department Criteria for Gifted and Talented Pupils The PE Department criteria used to identify gifted and talented pupils is based upon visual observations of pupils practical performances along with listening to their ability to analyse their own and others performances. We encourage pupils who show potential to attend clubs and represent the school in competition. Pupils identified are also put forward to coaching sessions outside of school activities as well as for district, partnership, club and county teams. Lesson Structure: Lesson Structure and Criteria for Supporting Gifted and Talented Pupils Aims - What we are covering within the lesson. - What we want to achieve within the lesson. - Why we are covering it. Incorporating Gifted and Talented Pupils: Question & answer Different depths of questions using expansion questions for gifted and talented pupils. Allow the pupils to set the criteria for achievement within the lesson. Coaching of peers to develop further knowledge and understanding of skills to improve personal ability to analyse their own and others performances. Grouping pupils to encourage them to perform and develop. As well as through the coaching of peers. Placing the emphasis on pupils to perform to the best of their ability (personal best) at all times. Staff to use strategies of differentiation. 11
