Letter from the President Dear Friends, The year 2013 yielded significant accomplishments for Helene Fuld College of Nursing. Since becoming President in 2012, my goal has been to guide the faculty and staff in developing a platform for success. The development of a five-year strategic plan has allowed us to discuss our goals and to determine how to measure their attainment. academic advisement, by having and using strong technology resources and state-of-the-art nursing arts labs, and with the creation of the Presidential Scholars Society. We also continue to nurture future nurse educators by welcoming graduate students who wish to complete their nurse educator internships at the College. While we plan for the future, the College remains true to its mission of providing an opportunity for men and women to further their nursing education through a career-ladder approach. Additionally, we provide students with the necessary tools to excel in this rapidly evolving healthcare environment. We also help them to develop their critical thinking skills and self-confidence so that they can become effective decision-makers and patient advocates. The faculty and staff continue to assure student success and promote academic excellence through robust This publication illustrates the many ways in which we fulfill our mission. In doing so, we not only help our students to realize their dreams, but we help them to improve their communities. As a private, not-for-profit institution, we are heavily dependent on tuition as a source of revenue. For that reason, we are thankful for the generous donations that have been made by individuals, foundations, and corporations. These contributions have been vital to our growth and defraying student debt. It is an honor for me to be President of Helene Fuld College of Nursing. The addition of the new upper division Bachelor of Science program as a companion to our accelerated LPN to RN Associate Degree program has helped to position the College for future growth and success. I look forward to the next year with the confidence that we are working to improve the health care of all New Yorkers through the education we provide to nurses. Wendy Robinson PhD, RN, FNP-BC, CNE President & CEO 3
Letter from the Chair Dear Friends, As Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Helene Fuld College of Nursing, I am happy to report that the College is flourishing and is headed in exciting directions with strong leadership, high quality faculty, and enthusiastic students. The past two years have been ones of significant change for the College. Alan McDougall, who served as Chairman for much of the past decade, resigned as chair in the fall of Alan handled his responsibilities with extraordinary skill, wisdom, and dedication. He deserves major credit for the good news, which is that Helene Fuld College of Nursing is strong both academically and financially. The College has new leadership, beautifully remodeled facilities, and an expanded academic program. We have made big changes in the past several years. These changes are dramatic but hardly new for Helene Fuld College. For nearly 70 years, we have been at the forefront in responding to the needs of the nursing community and to challenges in the nursing profession. Many changes lie in our future, but I am confident that we will be able to meet them and thrive. James C. Frauenthal, Ph.D. Chairman of the Board I must express the Board of Trustees pride in its new President and CEO. In May 2014 Dr. Robinson presided over the graduation of our first class of graduates of the bachelor s degree program and the largest associate degree graduating class in the College s history. 4
Helene Fuld College of Nursing has always been at the forefront of nursing education. We are dedicated to maintaining the standard of excellence that has always been our hallmark. Through our career ladder approach, we are committed to advancing licensed practical nurses to the associate degree registered nurse level and registered nurses to the baccalaureate level. Nurses play a unique and critical role in the holistic care of patients, and the scope of their responsibilities has increased over recent decades. The scope of practice in all steps of the nursing process is independent and comprehensive, and nurses are leaders in the national movement to improve the capacity, quality, efficiency, and safety of health care. They are called upon to use critical thinking, and in their work they play a leading role in evaluating patients and intervening to tackle complications and reduce risks. They are responsible for coordinating care delivered by a team of providers, and they educate patients and family members so they understand their medical conditions and know how to move forward to lead healthy lives. In sum, nurses are playing a larger role in providing care at all levels of the health care system. This role is expected to become even more important, and demand for nurses expected to increase, as our population ages and as more people gain access to health care because of the Affordable Care Act. However, the U.S. is projected to experience a shortage of nurses when the need for health care grows. In addition, the Institute of Medicine has called for the nursing community to respond to a lack of diversity and the underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minority groups and men in the nursing workforce. Today, nurses from ethnic and racial minority groups represent only 19% of the workforce, while 37% of the population in the United States is made up of these groups. HFCN, with its long history of admitting, retaining, and graduating students from underrepresented minority groups and/or students from disadvantaged or lowincome backgrounds is perfectly suited to respond to these needs and to continue to lead the field. 5
AAS Program I am an LPN and work at Kings County Hospital. I came to Helene Fuld College because I want to go as far as I can in my career, and getting an Associate Degree is my next step. Everyone here is motivated, everyone is helpful and everyone is a role model. I love it it pushes you to do your best. Beulah Yates In the past two years, over 400 students have graduated from HFCN with their Associate in Applied Science degrees. Some earned their degrees in a year, going fulltime, and others took longer. For most of our students, it has been a challenge as they juggle classes, children, jobs, and other responsibilities. Their coursework involves classroom instruction as well as laboratory skills simulation and clinical experiences. All of these graduates become eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam that will certify them as Registered Nurses, and when they are RNs, they take home a higher salary, have more options for career changes, and have a stronger job outlook than licensed practical nurses (LPNs). BS Program I came here for my BS because I want to move forward from being an operating room nurse to working in public health. With my BS, I will be able to work with patients, their families, and communities. The schedule makes it easy to attend classes; you have diversity of students, of faculty, of needs, and of challenges. Students work, they are immigrants, they have families, and they commute. The College embraces all of it. Elizabeth Maccaro In we started a Bachelor of Science degree program and in May 2014, the first class of students graduated. As major changes happen in healthcare delivery in the United States, our graduates will need to develop stronger skills in leadership, critical thinking, and knowledge of population health, which are all key components necessary to meet the challenges of our nation s current and future health care needs. A BS degree opens up opportunities for greater career advancement, and qualifies its holder for administrative, research, consulting, and teaching positions that are not available to those with only an AAS degree. 6
Community Outreach HFCN s campus is located in the heart of Harlem, where residents are at risk for heart disease and diabetes. On average, they have higher blood pressure, higher blood glucose levels, and are generally less healthy than other New Yorkers. Our faculty regularly reach out to our community. We organize and participate in health fairs, train Head Start program staff, and serve on community advisory boards. Many of the faculty who are registered nurses and nurse practitioners continue to work as healthcare providers in their spare time. We provide the Harlem community with much needed health services, including hypertension and glucose screening, and explain how to interpret the readings. We also provide parents with literature on asthma, allergies, and immunizations.
