3 Message from the Dean There are so many ways in which Sage s School of Health Sciences is responding to the needs of today s health care professionals through health care education. Here are just a few examples of how we are meeting the needs of our students and our community: We are actively preparing nurses at the doctoral level. This is a crucial step in providing future nursing leaders in administrative and clinical roles. According to the Institutes of Medicine, a nursing doctorate is required for nurses to serve as primary care providers, nurse researchers, and nurse faculty positions currently in great demand across the profession and within the health care system. Sage is establishing important new connections. We have partnered with regional health insurance provider CDPHP to establish the annual Nutrition Lecture Series. The inaugural speaker, Christina Economos, PhD, from Tufts University, addressed the very timely issue of childhood obesity. The 2013 speaker, Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, CSSD, LDN, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and nutrition consultant to many NFL, NHL, MLB, and NCAA teams, will discuss eating to optimize performance for athletes and active people. We have initiated regular interprofessional case conferences focused on bringing together students from each of the health sciences. These programs provide students with a chance to meet, study, and learn with and from each other, across their professional areas. This kind of interaction prepares our students for the real world of interprofessional health care teams. In the midst of this growth, we continue with the strengths we are known for: outreach and professional excellence. Many programs in the School of Health Sciences do extensive community outreach ranging from games for good health for urban children to health fairs for senior citizens. Faculty members in each of the health sciences disciplines continue to engage in research; present their findings at local, regional, national, and international conferences; publish in professional journals; and apply for and receive grants. I am proud to champion the students and faculty in the School of Health Sciences. We hope that you will feel inspired by what you read here and that you will join us in working towards creating a healthier future for all. Esther M. In fact, Sage s President, Susan C. Scrimshaw, PhD, is an internationally respected medical anthropologist and public health researcher and speaker. And Sage faculty and students are constantly involved in exciting research and collaborative projects with area health care facilities.

7 We take education personally The School of Health Sciences deliberately maintains small classes to maximize class interaction and exchange with the faculty talented educators who also practice what they teach. Working closely with peers and colleagues mimics and prepares students for the collaborative health care environment, and students gain valuable practical experience through service internships tailored to each student s program and career goals. We are serious about research At Sage, the focus is on practical and applied research finding innovative ways to apply classroom knowledge and theory to everyday situations. Students have opportunities to conduct independent research or participate in faculty research projects, and many present their work at the annual Sage Graduate Schools Research Symposium. Student and faculty research is supported by the Sage Research Institute, which fosters collaboration across disciplines; provides inter-professional education, research and practice opportunities; and serves as a resource for addressing critical issues in society. We know that timing is everything Sage s graduate programs are designed with the scheduling needs of adults in mind, many of whom are balancing active careers and personal lives with academic pursuits. Sage offers many classes in the evening, on weekends, and online. Programs in the School of Health Sciences range from a distance learning/ online option for the Dietetic Internship to the full-time day format for the Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy programs.

8 Keeping Nursing Education Affordable Sage is committed to ensuring high-quality, patient centered and cost-effective care while addressing the nursing shortage. Since 2012, RN students pay only $400 per credit hour for bachelor s degree courses. Most RNs with associate degrees need 60 credit hours to obtain their bachelor s degree. Now, instead of $40,000, the program at Sage costs $24,000. The Sage Colleges Health Systems Alliance provides a 20% tuition discount to students from participating health care organizations: for a list, visit sage.edu/costaid/ health_alliance. The Institutes of Medicine set a goal of increasing the number of baccalaureate nurses to 80 percent by Sage, a renowned leader in the education and development of well-trained health care providers, is on the cusp of the changing landscape of the nursing profession. Reducing tuition will increase the number of better-trained nurses more efficiently and reflects Sage s dedication to ensuring the highest level of quality and safe and cost-effective care.

9 Leading the Way in Research Recent Faculty Scholarship Highlights Nursing professor Kathleen Kelly was awarded a prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant together with management professor Kimberly Fredericks. Kelly, an expert in translational research, and Fredericks were asked to analyze the Institute of Medicine s 2010 Report on The Future of Nursing. Psychology professor Bronna Romanoff, occupational therapy professor Barbara Thompson, and creative and performing arts professor Leigh Davies were awarded a National Honorable Mention Award from the Campus-Community Partnerships for Health for their work and programming on behalf of veterans. Physical therapy professors Neeti Pathare, Marjane Selleck and Dean Haskvitz were awarded a Robert Salant Research Award for their research related to childhood obesity that was presented at the New York Physical Therapy Association conference. Patricia Pohl, chair and professor of physical therapy, was invited to speak at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America in Boston. Nursing professors Joan Dacher and Barbara Pieper gave a presentation at the American Public Health Association annual convention in Washington, D.C. on the limited planning, policy agenda and resource allocation for retirees with intellectual disabilities. Nutrition professor Rayane AbuSabha had a manuscript published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Hunger and Environmental Nutrition. The sixth edition of psychology professor Susan Cloninger s book, Theories of Personality: Understanding Persons, was published by Pearson Education. 10 Excellence in the Health Sciences The MS in Occupational Therapy is the only accredited master s level Occupational Therapy program in the Capital District and upstate New York state. Fulltime students can complete the 80.5-credit masters program in 27 months, which includes six months of field experience. Students can elect to complete the program on a part-time basis by enrolling in classes 2-3 days per week and completing one year of coursework over a two-year time period. Sage s Department of Nursing has been educating excellent nurses for 90 years, and is a member agency of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, the National League for Nursing, and the Council of Deans of Nursing in Senior Colleges and Universities in New York State. Students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program have an ultimate pass rate on the National Physical Therapy Examination higher than 90 percent for the past three years, which exceeds state and national averages. Every Sage Physical Therapy graduate seeking employment has secured a position within six months after graduation.

11 About the Dean Esther M. Haskvitz, PT, PhD, ATC, has been a professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program since 2004 and was named interim dean of the School of Health Sciences in She was made permanent dean in Prior to joining Sage, Dean Haskvitz taught at Smith College, Notre Dame College and Springfield College. Her publications include co-authoring articles in the journal Physical Therapy and the book Applied Sports Medicine for Coaches (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins: 2009). Dean Haskvitz has served as treasurer for the Section on Research of the American Physical Therapy Association, and her current research focuses on childhood obesity and various areas of clinical practice. Haskvitz earned her PhD and MEd from the University of Virginia, where her dissertation title was Energy cost of assisted ambulation in older adults. She earned her MS from Texas Woman s University, and an AB degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
