1 Arts and Music Offerings at Sweetland School Children will be split into groups accordingly 6 students per class Mondays Drawing (fall), Printmaking (winter), Painting (spring) introducing media and developing skills developing creative thinking. Music - see music mentors for more details. Cultural Arts curriculum. 2 sessions of 11 weeks Fall / Winter Cultural Immersion through story and the arts. Project Based work. Mondays: K- 6 Multi age opportunities Exploring story, music, dance, and traditional arts globally child initiated. Emphasis on countries from our groups heritage what is your families story? pick 5-8 countries to explore. Comparison to Maine / New England heritage and stories. Develop storytelling skills, share stories from many cultures. Story games. Cooking and traditional customs explored. Art / photo exchange to schools in chosen countries. Possible Visiting artists invited over the course of the program. Project to be determined, initiated by group. Collaborations with Coastal Opportunities and Quarry Hill possible. Multi media explorations and community sharing of work. Examples and Program Descriptions and Instructors: Movement explorations Ann Hedly Rousseau Ann offers a variety of movement opportunities, following the child and encouraging us all to pay attention to the needs and offerings of our bodies. Ann Hedly Rousseau received her BFA in Dance and Choreography from Virginia Commonwealth University. She then moved to New York City after

3 being offered a scholarship to study at The Martha Graham school. Ann continued to study, dance and perform in New York City with various choreographers and teachers. The Elements of You - Kari Luehman : A Child s Journey through the 5rhythms Using movement, art, and guided visualization, we will move through each of the 5Rhythms (Flow, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness). As we explore each rhythm we will allow the energy to reveal and balance itself within our bodies and spirits to find the fullness of all the energies in and around us. Jess Shepard Kids Yoga Explore yoga through storytelling, games, and art. Learn poses that will help you to relax when you feel tense or motivate when you feel sluggish all while stretching your body and building strength and agility. Denyse Robinson African Dance African Dance, Drum, and Song classes with Denyse Robinson. This class is focused on FUN! A recreational dance class for the child who is interested in movement, drumming, rhythm and singing without the pressure of performance. We will be learning traditional dances and rhythms from West Africa, Haiti, the Afro-Caribbean and South Africa. We will alternate between movement, choreography, drumming, songs, stories, art and games while learning African dance and drum techniques and respect for the cultures from which these rhythms originate. Peaceful Warrior Program - Chuck Nguyen teaches the beauty of Martial Arts with a focus on non-violent and non-aggressive techniques and practice. Students will learn how to deflect and redirect using the kung-fu movements of animals, water, and forces of nature along with Zen stories. Music Mentors and Programs Music and Movement with Mindfulness skills with Jess Day Mondays 9-10 Music Together Big Kids ~ designed for 5,6,7 year olds Your 5-, 6-, or 7-year-old is developing quickly and exploring new activities,

4 mastering new skills, and gaining independence. As a parent, you may be making choices about extracurricular activities that complement their new school experiences and support their growth in music and in life. This class provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum that includes solfege, instrumental solos and ensembles, choreography, harmony singing, vocal development, and drumming skills. The Big Kids classroom is a safe, familiar, fun environment where your child can experiment with new musical activities like conducting and improvisation, story songs, "silly operas," and game songs. Big Kids classes focus on Basic Music Literacy, laying the foundation for formal music instruction in school or in private instrument lessons, as well as a lifetime of joyful music making. JAMMM (Jess' Arts Music Movement & Mindfulness) Programs are about family joy, connection, play and mindfulness. We will explore musical play through movement/yoga, story, song, rhythm instruments and mindfulness practices. Jess is also available for individual music lessons in guitar and ukulele. Jess Day Licensed Director, and certified Music Together teacher, Jessica, originally from Montreal, Quebec, first came to Music Together in 2008 through her pursuit to share her love of music with her own children. She then completed her own training with Music Together in Hingham, MA at the South Shore Conservatory. She believes music is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child and that music creates a strong foundation for all other learning. She received a B.F.A. in Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design and an M.F.A. in Education from Boston University. Music Fundamentals 7+ Fridays This class will cover the basics of reading music. This will include visual and aural identification of notes on the staff and keyboard including note values and rhythm, along with other musical subjects. We will use written and visual materials, and have the fun of creating sound with voice and xylophones. Gilda is also available to individual music lessons in violin and piano. Gilda Joffe violinist, received her B.M. And M.M. degrees from the Juilliard School of Music. She has played many solo and chamber music performances throughout the US and Europe, and was a permanent member of the Danish and Swedish Radio Orchestras. Gilda has taught for 14 years in Midcoast Maine and will be teaching Music Fundamentals at Sweet Tree Arts.

5 Musicianship and composition 9+ Over the course, students will be coached in creating a song or instrumental piece that they will perform with the group, using instruments that they choose to learn to play. Malcolm is also available for scheduled lessons Malcolm Brooks, PhD, started his career composing folk songs in New England, expanded it to include film scores and sacred music, and is now composing songs based on the personal stories of people in Maine and Eastern Canada. With Marieke Slovin and Hannah Batley, he has pioneered the Story-to-Song approach. He has written music for over 20 films, many of which have been broadcast worldwide and won numerous honors, including two Emmy nominations and a Peabody award. His Sanctus has been sung at over 400 church services. His songs can be heard on recent releases by Cotton Polly, Sister Sun, and Tony Gagarin. He was educated at Columbia, Berkeley, and Prescott, and lives in Rockport with his wife Barbara.
