SUSCC will offer traditional and online courses to support the needs of our students, community, business, and industry. Safety, Nursing Judgement Clinical instructors observed that students often had difficulty calculating medications in the clinical setting. The students are able to accurately calculate once they are given the problem in Dr. ordered, med comes format but were not able to read labels and Medication Administration Records to determine calculations None known 1. Each student is required to attend a math review which will utilize responseware to ensure individual participation. 2.Following the review, each student will complete the discovery math lab which involves medical orders and medication labels. Discovery math results will be posted on moodle and a grade of 85 indicates the student is ready for the first math exam. Students may repeat discovery math and moodle until the 85 score is achieved. 3. Following the first math exam, students who score below 75 on this exam will be required to attend a peer coaching session where one to one help on interpreting medical orders and medication labels will be
4 given. Participating in the peer coaching session will make the student eligible for a second opportunity on the math exam. will be measured by a written exam. Results from the 3 semesters were Fall: 89%, Spring: 56%, and Summer: 71% scored 90 or higher on one of the two math exams. It was determined by clinical and classroom instructors that the success of the SLO was dependent upon the student's attitude about the process. During spring semester, there was a number of students who stated they could work the problems, it was just the way the problems were worded and that they did not need peer coaching. The clinical instructors noted that these same students were the ones least likely to be able to calculate medication problems on the floor independently. When the students approached peer coaching in a positive mode, it was deemed successful by the students. Therefore, the peer coaching program on math will continue. The faculty will encourage students who have been successful through the program to share that information with other students. Clinical instructors observed an increased ability and confidence in medication calculation 01/13/ :01 AM 01/13/ :01 PM NUR201-1 Type: : Student Learning Students enrolled in Registered Nursing will demonstrate a 3% score increase in the areas of human diversity, human flourishing, and cultural/spiritual and a 3% improvement in overall test score.
