University of Illinois at Chicago Emergency Medicine Simulation and Medical Education Fellowship The University of Illinois Simulation and Medical Education Fellowship is designed for Emergency Medicine physicians interested in pursuing a career in academic emergency medicine and to provide advanced training in simulation based medical education as well as a foundation in medical education theory and practice. Simulation focuses on medical education in the context of simulation laboratories for faculty, residents, medical students nurses and pre hospital providers. The UIC Simulation Fellowship equips Fellows to develop, implement and evaluate simulation- based educational programs including the use of simulation modalities such as high- fidelity mannequins, task trainers and standardized patients. Applicants will have the opportunity to pursue some of their own areas of interest within the scope of the fellowship. Fellowship is one year or two years in length with the 2-year program integrating a Masters of Health Professions Education (MHPE). Fellowship Director Valerie Dobiesz, MD, MPH, Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine Program Description: One year Fellowship Curriculum 1. Simulation Certification Program Working under the Direction of Rachel Yudkowsky, MD, MHPE, Director of the Dr. Allan L. and Mary L. Graham Clinical Performance Center in the College of Medicine at Chicago The UIC Simulation Fellowship equips Fellows to develop, implement and evaluate simulation- based educational programs including the use of simulation modalities such as high- fidelity mannequins, task trainers and standardized patients The Simulation Fellowship requires dedicated time of at least one day a week at the Dr Allan L and Mary L Graham Clinical Performance Center (GCPC). Founded in 1987, the Graham CPC was one of the first standardized patient centers in the world. The GCPC today is an integrated simulation center that utilizes a wide variety of simulation modalities including standardized patients, procedural skills task trainers, high- fidelity mannequins, clinical findings simulators, virtual and enhanced reality simulators, and screen- based simulation. GCPC simulation facilities occupy approximately 8,000

square feet in the College of Medicine, including two eight- room clinics for standardized patient encounters, two mannequin simulation suites, two procedural skills labs, a clinical findings simulation lab, and two classrooms, as well as office and administrative spaces. All of the learning spaces are equipped with AV recording and playback capability. As a member of the UIC Health Sciences Simulation Consortium, the GCPC is an Accredited Educational Institute of the American College of Surgeons. The Simulation Fellowship is comprised of three components: Education, Service, and Scholarship. Education: Fellows will learn how to develop, implement and evaluate a variety of simulation- based education (SBE) programs. Fellows will observe GCPC staff and attend faculty development and staff development workshops offered by the GCPC. The GCPC will provide readings, direct instruction, and supervised practice for Fellows. Educational objectives: at the completion of the fellowship the fellow will be able to: 1. Design educational programs using high- fidelity mannequins, write scenarios, operate mannequins, serve as a confederate in mannequin scenarios, and debrief learners. 2. Develop standardized patient programs and scripts. 3. Design instructional programs for teaching procedural skills 4. Design checklists, rating scales and other instruments for the assessment of learners and evaluation of SBE programs. 5. Create other instructional materials (eg videos) for SBE programs. The Fellow may pick one simulation modality in which to develop depth of expertise, but is expected to become familiar with all three major methods (mannequins, task trainers and SPs). By the end of the Fellowship the Fellow should be well prepared to take the simulation educator Certification Exam of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Service: Fellows will practice their simulation skills by assisting in the implementation of educational programs provided at the Graham Clinical Performance Center. Fellows will serve as co- instructors for EM simulation programs, and assist in other programs taking place on days that the Fellow is present in the Center. 1. Mannequin simulations: Fellows will write mannequin scenarios for GCPC

programs, operate the mannequins, serve as confederates, and serve as instructors to pre- brief and debrief learners. 2. Procedural skills: Fellows will create and update procedural skills checklists, create instructional videos, and serve as instructors in a variety of skills programs. 3. SP programs: Fellows may develop and pilot SP cases for programs such as the resident communication skills assessment, telemedicine training program, or the medical student graduation competency exam. 4. Program evaluation: Fellows may assist in the evaluation of the programs in which they participate. Fellows may initiate or assist in the development of new simulations and simulation programs of interest to them, in areas such as virtual reality, ultrasound guided procedures, and telemedicine. Scholarship: Each Fellow will select an SBE program or question to study. Example of works of scholarship could include: Developing, piloting and evaluating a new simulation- based educational program. Evaluating an existing SBE program. Comparing two SBE programs, or SBE programs using alternative instructional or assessment methods. Gathering evidence for the validity of an SBE assessment. GCPC faculty will provide mentorship and supervision of scholarship activities. Fellows are encouraged to disseminate their work via posters, presentations and submissions to journals and MedEdPortal. Fellows are expected to attend the annual International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare, and to participate in IMSH presentations with GCPC staff. The GCPC will support the Fellow s membership in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (including a subscription to the journal Simulation in Healthcare) and the Fellow s attendance at IMSH. 2. UIC Scholars of Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellowship The Fellows will participate in the Faculty Fellowship program under the direction of the Department of Medical Education. This program is designed for faculty interested in supporting ongoing curricular and instructional improvement,

and interested in developing themselves as educational leaders. This nine-month program consists of 20 workshops and independent study or collaborative group work in an online format. The Fellowship provides grounding in instructional design, curriculum development, learner assessment, program evaluation and educational leadership. Each Fellow is required to pursue a project focused on curriculum, instruction, assessment or faculty development. Projects may encompass the effect of a curricular or instructional change, modification of an assessment procedure, establishment of a web-based instructional system, or other projects important to the Fellow s department or training program. The project can be focused on the undergraduate, graduate, or continuing medical education. 3. ACEP Teaching Fellowship Fellows will participate in this program designed to help develop the skills needed to become successful in an academic environment, become an excellent academic instructor, and enhance management and leadership skills. The program is 11 days and is covered in two session (fall and spring) in Dallas Texas. Costs of this program are covered and registration is guaranteed. The Fellowship focuses on: Fundamentals of teaching and evaluation Designing effective and efficient instruction The realities of competing demands of an academic career- publishing, teaching, research, clinical work Topics Include Essential Elements of Instruction Instructional System Design Curriculum Development Effective Teaching Methods (lecture, bedside teaching, small group, procedural skills) Use of Questioning and Feedback Evaluation Microteaching Lab Creating a Peer Review Program Conflict Management Interviewing Skills and Process The RRC Process Effective Communication Skills Teaching Medical Students Creating a CV Journal Club Do s and Don ts

4. Academic Development and Professionalism Collaborative (ADPC) A year long collaborative aimed at providing a forum for all UIC fellows in fellowship training (Toxicology, Ultrasound, Resuscitation, International, and Simulation and Medical Education) to meet, gather, share ideas, and gain skills and knowledge that are complementary to individual fellowship programs. The mission is to develop future leaders and researchers in academic medicine. Topics include grant writing workshops, research, mentoring, teaching and creating teaching portfolios, and work- life balance in academic careers. Two-Year UIC Simulation and Medical Education Fellowship Curriculum Includes all the components of the one-year fellowship with the addition of a Masters Degree in the University of Illinois at Chicago Masters of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program, an educational leadership program for health professionals. Applicants must apply and be accepted to the University of Illinois Masters of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program by December 1 st of the year preceding the start of the fellowship. The Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program is designed for health professionals who want to prepare for educational leadership roles and to provide the training necessary to produce effective leaders in health professions education. The program recruits health professionals who have, or are preparing for, educational leadership positions but who lack formal training in education and management and is offered on site or online. Courses address topics including curriculum development, program evaluation, instruction, student assessment, current educational issues, research methods, and leadership. MHPE students are encouraged to use their home institutions as a laboratory for the practical application of educational and leadership concepts.
