In the three subjects the results are as follows: AS subject % A-B % A-C Biology 6% 63% Chemistry 53% 93% Physics 23% 92% We follow the AQA specification in all three A level subjects. Our working environment With views of the Thames, the Science department is able to offer students and staff a calm and enjoyable working environment. We are housed in five state of the art specialist laboratories, five demonstration classrooms and associated prep rooms. We also have portable ICT facilities as well as access to the school s dedicated ICT rooms.

4 In September 2014, Teddington School welcomed its first Sixth Form Intake and the department has gained two new specially designed A level laboratories and a Science Physics studio in the purpose built sixth form block. Each Science laboratory and demonstration classroom has an interactive whiteboard and the department works collaboratively to develop their usage. We have an extensive shared area where resources are shared amongst all of the teachers and technicians within the department. We have just invested in new data logging equipment with associated sensors and this is having a significant impact on developing teaching and learning. We also have a science staff work area with associated computers and bank of reference textbooks. The Science department was inspected by OFSTED as part of the subject specific reviews, this work formed part of the Maintaining Curiosity report into Science education in schools. The subject visit inspection looked into four key areas, which included Achievement and Standards, Quality of Teaching and Learning and Leadership and Management. The overall effectiveness was judged to be outstanding. The Curriculum Combined Science is taught throughout the school. The emphasis is on showing how the various areas of Science inter-relate to explain scientific and technological aspects of our lives. In Year 7 to 9 Science is taught in units as part of our in house schemes of work which reflect the investigative nature of the Science National Curriculum. We have recently rewritten our Key Stage 3 schemes of work in line with the new KS3 curriculum and use Collins KS3 Science as a teaching resource. Setting by ability occurs in Years To help students get the attention they deserve, we set early in Year 7 using our own school based test, taking account of their primary school SATs scores and teacher assessments. Setting is monitored and reviewed each term. We have a highly sophisticated tracking system within the department which is used to support the whole school marking policy. The department is committed to developing an innovative and flexible curriculum, making full use of the opportunities offered by our new building. At Key Stage 4, most students study the AQA Core Science A specification in Year 10 and in Year 11 the majority of students will study the Additional Science GCSE following the AQA specification. In September 2004, the department introduced separate Science GCSEs following the AQA specification in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This option is available to the most able students in Science and has been extremely popular, the number of students studying this course has grown year on year. We also introduced BTEC level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science for some of our year 11 students, this is aimed for students who would prefer a vocational approach to studying the scientific concepts and this has also been successful as an alternative pathway. The course has now been superseded by BTEC Principles of Applied Science and BTEC Application of Science. Our well-equipped sixth form centre opened in September We currently offer AQA Biology, Chemistry and Physics at AS level and, from September 2015, at A level. The department has attracted a considerable number of students to all three Science A level courses.

5 The department runs a very successful lower school science club to enable students to extend their practical and investigative skills, several students also use this club to provide opportunities to carry out work as part of their CREST award. We also offer a range of extracurricular activities which include water rockets construction for the National Physics Laboratory (NPL) water rocket challenge in the summer, technology challenges such as SATRO and various competitions. As part of the Curriculum Enhancement we arrange visits to the National History Museum, London Zoo and the Science Museum as well as organising outside speakers and science ambassadors from a range of different fields to speak to students about life as a scientist. We have also established good links with local scientific institutions such as NPL; we are able to carry out liquid nitrogen demonstrations because they provide us with the expertise and resources. We have also set up a forensic Science day which the students enjoyed our triple award Physics students also enjoyed an educational visit to CERN, Geneva this year where we visited the large Hadron collider. We are always looking for opportunities to enrich the learning experience of Science as well as enhancing the knowledge and understanding in our G@T students. National Science Week which occurs annually during March is a major event in the departments calendar and during the week we organise lots of activities, competitions and challenges for all students. Students actively participate in the event. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the further development of our department and, through this, support the development of Science Education in our technological and multi-cultural society. We look forward to welcoming you to our department.
