Cornwall; ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Course Objectives: This class addresses the unique entrepreneurial experience of conceiving, evaluating, creating, managing, and potentially selling a business. The goal is to provide a comprehensive background with practical application of important concepts applicable to entrepreneurial environment. In addition to creative aspects, key business areas of finance, accounting, marketing and management will be addressed from an entrepreneurial perspective. The course relies on online discussion and

2 participation. Part of the assignment is building a business plan to develop a strategy for launching and managing a business. Course Credit Hours: 3 credit hours HCC Important Dates September 20 Classes begin November 27 Thanksgiving Break Begins December 8 Total Major Project (Business Plan) Due 11/27 28/2014 Thanksgiving break Instructional Methods: Some of the learning strategies used in this class include power point notes, quizzes, Discussion questions and Participation Questions. These learning strategies will enhance your analytical, critical thinking, communication, decision-making, and cooperative learning skills. All students are expected to contribute meaningfully to class discussions. Methodology for Calculation of Grades

3 For ease, I use points to determine grades. Total points = 530; Points will come from THREE sources: 1) 26% Chapter Quizzes 2) 26% Discussion questions 3) 47% Business Plan Project. See Table 1 on following pages for details. Table 1

4 Grades *Dates and Points listed on table 1 are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. I. CHAPTER QUIZZES see Table 1 for due dates: Special Note: due to limited time to complete all chapters, we will cover 2 chapters per week. Therefore, each week you will have 2 QUIZZES; a. All quizzes are due by Sunday, 11:50pm of current week. b. Students will only have one attempt to complete each quiz. c. Students will 15 minutes to complete the quiz. d. Ten questions, each worth one point. e. NO MAKE Ups on quizzes. f. Quizzes open on Saturday of that week at 5am and close on Sunday of that week at 11:50pm. e. Each quiz is opened for approximately 2 full DAYS. f. You can only submit each answer once, once the answer is submitted, the submission is final! g. To get the Full benefit of the 15 minutes, you should start the test by at least 11pm on Sunday. The system will lock and/close the quiz at exactly 11:50pm. h. The quizzes will allow me to gauge whether you individually understand the material. Yes, you will have your book available. However, 15 minutes is not sufficient time to flip through 30+ pages to find the answer!! So READ the chapters. II. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS these questions will come from the Chapter. a. ONE question per chapter, each 10 points. b. When replying, to avoid confusion, please retype the questions, so that I know which question you are answering. c. Discussion Questions are due on Thursdays by 11:50pm ENTIRE question must be answered to receive full points!!! d. CHECK SPELLING & GRAMMER!!! This is a COLLEGE Course, both S/G are an expectation! e. Unless stated in the questions, the text is the ONLY material to be used for this assignment. A zero will be given if not followed!

5 III. BUSINESS PLAN - Creating a Business Plan is a HCC requirement for this class. Start thinking of a business you would like to start/create, whether its selling/creating a product or service you wish to provide. You will be asked to do some research on that industry. How many competitors this in industry? Is there a substitute for this product or service? How tough is the competition? Is the location important? How will you finance the business? The text is needed for this assignment. The Business Plan is considered the Final for this class. Total points 250! The assignment is due 12/8/2014. The details for the assignment will be distributed shortly. The table below provides which sections included in project. ASSIGNEMENT DUE DATES: Due dates are listed on Table 1. Please review carefully. EXTENTIONS, EXTRA CREDIT, Makeup Exams There will be NO extensions, No Extra Credit nor No Makeup Exam. Do not ask! You are given plenty of time to complete assignments. One of the benefits of taking an online course is flexibility and time management. Therefore, we need to learn to manage our time and complete all assignments on time. Assignment Deadlines All assignments must be posted by the due date. No Exceptions. Late Assignments no late assignments will be accepted. NO Exceptions. Policies General Classroom Policies VIRTUAL CLASSROOM CONDUCT As with on-campus classes, all students in HCC Distance Education courses are required to follow all HCC Policies & Procedures, the Student Code of Conduct, the Student Handbook, and relevant sections of the Texas Education Code when interacting and communicating in a virtual classroom

6 with faculty and fellow students. Students who violate these policies and guidelines will be subject to disciplinary action that could include denial of access to course-related , discussion groups, and chat rooms or being removed from the class. Additional Classroom Policies ACADEMIC DISHONESTY. Failure to follow any of the four Academic Dishonesty policies listed below, will be a cause for an automatic zero and/or F. The list below is not an all-inclusive list. You are expected to be familiar with the College s Policy on Academic Honesty, found in the catalog and student handbook. Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling course requirements. Penalties and/or disciplinary proceedings may be imitated by College system officials against a student accused of scholastic dishonesty. 1. Scholastic Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to cheating on a test/assignment, plagiarism, and collusion. 2. Cheating on a test/assignment includes: a. copying from another students test paper and/or assignment posted on-line. b. using material not authorized by the person giving the test. c. collaborating with another student during a test without authorization d. knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, transporting, or soliciting in whole or part the contents of a test that has not been administered. e. briding another person to obtain a test that is to be administered. 3. Plagiarism - means the appropriation of another s work and the unacknowledged incorporation of that work in one s own work offered for credit. 4. Collusion means the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing written work offered for credit. Possible punishment for academic dishonesty may include a grade of 0 or F in the assignment or test. DISTANCE EDUCATION ADVISING AND COUNSELING SERVICES Much DE student information can be found on the DE Student Services website: de.hccs.edu. Advising or counseling can be accomplished through our online request form AskDECounseling. Counselors and Student Services Associates (SSA) can assist students with admissions, registration, entrance testing requirements, degree planning, transfer issues, and career counseling. In-person, confidential sessions, can also be scheduled to provide brief counseling and community referrals to address personal concerns impacting academic success. Technical Support Technical Support is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call if you are experiencing technical issues. Course-Specific Policies Double-check your posts to ensure you have posted the correct, complete assignment. When posting attachments, be sure you post the correct attachment. After posting an

7 attachment, go back to verify you posted the correct document and your document is visible. Technical difficulties are not an "excuse" for lateness or failure to attach documents. HCC Course Withdrawal Policy The State of Texas imposes penalties on students who drop courses excessively. Students are limited to no more than SIX total course withdrawals throughout their educational career at a Texas public college or university. To help you avoid having to drop/withdraw from any class, contact your DE professor regarding your academic performance. You may also want to contact your DE counselor to learn about helpful HCC resources (e.g. online tutoring, child care, financial aid, job placement, etc.). In order to withdraw from your DE class, you MUST first contact your DE professor, PRIOR to the withdrawal deadline to receive a W on your transcript. After the withdrawal deadline has passed, you will receive the grade that you would have earned. Zeros averaged in for required coursework not submitted will lower your semester average significantly, most likely resulting in a failing grade of an F. It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the class; however, your professor reserves the right to withdraw you without your request due to excessive absences. If you do not feel comfortable contacting your professor to withdraw, you may contact a DE counselor. However, please do not contact both a DE counselor and your DE professor to request a withdrawal; either one is sufficient. Please contact the HCC Registrar s Office at to determine class withdrawal deadlines. Student Services EARLY ALERT HCC has instituted an Early Alert process by which your professor will alert you through Distance Education (DE) counselors of concerns that you might fail a class because of excessive absences and/or poor academic performance. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS International Students are restricted to ONLY ONE online/distance education class per semester. Please contact the International Student Office at if you have additional questions about your visa status. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the appropriate HCC Disability Support Service (DSS) Counselor at the beginning of each semester. Faculty is authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office.
