1 Winter Newsletter 2014 DISCOVERY NORTH BAY Winter at Discovery North Bay Museum Staff and Volunteers Bring History to Life for Local School Groups By: Naomi Rupke 35 school groups came to Discovery North Bay Museum during the fall of 2013 to see Fur Trade Nation. Lorne Fleece brought the fur trade to life for local school groups Education Coordinator, Katelyn Wall, worked with museum summer staff and volunteers to develop educational programs to accompany the traveling exhibit. Students could try their hand at quill pen writing, make a corn husk doll, or learn about the voyageurs while making a small canoe model. The success of this program would not have been possible without volunteer contributions by Lorne Fleece and Sylvia Antinozzi. View of the Fur Trade Nation exhibit to 12 local classes. We are excited to have Sylvia as part of our educational programming team and to provide tours and programs in both French and English. Retired teacher, Pat Moulson, developed a history detective workshop which involves investigating historic artifacts before creating a museum exhibit. This workshop is available in the museum or as a classroom visit. Volunteers form a vital part of all aspects of museum operation including school programming, archival research, gift shop operation, fundraising, and museum maintenance. 2 View of exhibit at Discovery North Bay Museum Group portrait of Italian Canadian Internees Outside Barrack Building at Fredericton Internment Camp, Courtesy of the Giacomelli Family The DeMarco family at Discovery North Bay s exhibit opening Ordinary Lives Extraordinary Times: Italian Canadian Experiences During World War II By: Naomi Rupke Discovery North Bay Museum is pleased to host an exhibit presented by the Columbus Centre of Toronto which archives the struggles of the Italian Canadian community during the early 1940s. The exhibit focuses on the internment of approximately 600 individuals in camps and the designation of approximately 31,000 individuals as enemy aliens. The museum held an opening where family members of World War II internees shared their stories. Sandy O Grady spoke about her grandfather Leopold Mascioli who was interned in Camp Petawawa for eight months in Judi Jessen spoke about how the DeMarco family store was boycotted in North Bay while her grandfather Carmine spent two years in Camp Petawawa. Sandy and Judi have agreed to speak to school and community groups who visit the museum and wish to learn more about Italian Canadian experiences during World War II. The Museum would like to thank the Davedi Club for sponsoring free exhibit admission between March 17 and March 29th. 150 years Italian Settlement The Davedi celebrates Italian contributions to Canada 2 Discovery North Bay Museum Winter Newsletter 2014

4 Museum Director Naomi Rupke connects with Dr. Cara Krompotich to discuss interactive museum technology Ontario Minister of Culture, Michael Chan, speaks at the O.M.A. banquet Professional Development at the Ontario By: Naomi Rupke In November 2013, I travelled to Markham to take part in the annual Ontario Museum Association Conference. This conference is a great opportunity to share ideas with museum professionals across the province. Trade show booths are set up to provide information about museum technology, archival supplies, and travelling exhibits available for rent. Museum conferences allow staff to learn about fundraisers, exhibits, events which have been successful across the province. Sharing resources is an important way to make sure we work to the best of our ability to keep up with changing museum standards and to provide our visitors with the best possible experience. Highlights from this year s conference included workshops on innovative fundraising, developing volunteer run programs, and integrating archival collections into museum exhibitions. Museum staff also take part in museum conferences with the Voyageur Heritage Network, a group that works to provide professional development opportunities to museums in Northern Ontario. 5 Visitors enjoyed the Fur Trade Nation exhibit during the Christmas Walk The West Ferris High School band put visitors in the Christmas Spirit The Old Fashioned Christmas Walk at Discovery North Bay Museum By: Sarah Aubertin For our second consecutive year, the Discovery North Bay Museum partnered with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure and the North Bay Professional Firefighters Association to bring a chili cook-off fundraiser to community members during the Downtown Christmas Walk on November 22nd. The event featured chili from 9 different local restaurants; each who prepared and donated their best pot of chili. MC Ferguson s Bistro was a runaway for the people s choice of best chili. On behalf of all those involved, the Museum would like to thank everyone who joined us during the event to support two great local charities. 6 North Bay Model Railroad Club Day at Discovery North Bay Museum The North Bay Mineral and Lapidary Club Display was part of Collectors Day The North Bay Model Railroad Club and By: Katelyn Wall The first two weekends of November 2013 were busy ones as we were pleased to host two very exciting events. Collectors Day took place on November 2nd and on November 8th-9th, the North Bay Model Railroad Club set up their train exhibit. Both events were a success, bringing in both new and familiar faces from a variety of ages. This included an 11 year old who took part in Collectors Day by showing off his Disney stamp collection. North Bay Model Railroad Club members brought the history of rail to life with scale replicas of trains that operated in North Bay and across Canada. Thank you to Jeff Fournier, the Model Railroad Club, and all the collectors and visitors who made these events possible. We look forward to hosting both events again next year. 7 Upcoming Park Events By: Gordan Rennie We have been working hard to attract new activities to the museum grounds in order to increase visitation and generate income. On February 22nd, the Ontario University Athletics Nordic Ski Championship was held at Discovery North Bay and the Community Waterfront Park. Dozens of skiers from across Ontario participated. Beginning after Victoria Day, the North Bay Farmer s Market will be adding a Wednesday market weekly in front of the museum. The market will run from noon to 5 pm and provide an opportunity pick up local produce. This is in addition to the weekly Saturday morning market next door to the museum. On June 13-15, the North Bay Indian Friendship and partners will be hosting a Pow Wow behind the museum. On August 1-4, the Summer in the Park festival will take place behind the museum. Mark these events in your calendar and drop by the museum to see our summer show Once Upon a Time..
