10 NOTE: Office Closures--Classes will not be scheduled during breaks/holidays. Aquatics Have you wondered if water exercise is for you? Water exercise has many unique advantages. Water resistance exercises can help increase your endurance and muscle strength, improve flexibility by stretching your muscles and toning your entire body. It can also be a good cardio workout as well. Water workouts are designed to meet the needs of everyone, regardless of fitness level. These workouts are less stressful to your joints and muscles, all while giving you an invigorating workout. Participants have reported they have an increase in energy, endurance and muscular strength after attending water exercise classes on a regular basis. Please consult a Physician prior to enrolling or beginning any exercise or otherwise physical program. Check out the SE Continuing Education website for all of our class offerings! We have many different options to choose from that may fit your needs. Aquatic programs are held in the Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium indoor heated pool. We offer lockers (you provide the lock), showers, and electrical outlets in the private dressing rooms. Lifeguards are on duty. Note: The pool will be closed during times of audible thunder and/or visible lightning and when the University is closed. When unscheduled swimming pool maintenance is required and the pool has to close, CE will make every effort to contact participants who are enrolled in the class. 10

11 Spring 2015 Scheduled Pool Closings March 16-20, April 3 Inclement Weather Students enrolled in all SE classes may call the following number for closing information due to inclement weather: (580) If possible, the decision to close will be made the evening before prior to the ten o'clock news and no later than 6:00 a.m. the morning of the possible closing. University closings (not pool closings) will be broadcast on local radio and television stations. ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION AQUATIC PROGRAM (AFAP) If you have a form of arthritis or a related condition, your physician may recommend that you begin an exercise program to help improve your flexibility and decrease pain. If you re searching for a program that will lessen joint stiffness, increase your stamina and still be fun, aquatic exercise may be the answer for you. Water exercise is especially good for people with arthritis, because it allows you to exercise without putting excess strain on your joints and muscles. The AFAP gives you the opportunity to do gentle activities in warm water, with guidance from a trained instructor. Although it is a nonclinical program (one that will not replace a prescribed regimen of therapeutic exercise), past participants have enjoyed some physical benefits, such as decreased pain and stiffness. 16 SCUBA Certification Class The Basic Open Water SCUBA class will provide certification in diving, and the certification is good for life. Refresher classes are recommended for students who have not been diving for a long period of time. Students must be at least 12 years of age to enroll. Students between the ages of 12 and 14, upon successful completion of all the requirements in the classroom, pool, and open water, receive a Junior Open Water Diver Certification. Upon reaching the age of 15, these students can be upgraded to an Open Water Diver Certification. With students between the ages of 12-14, it is recommended that an adult accompany them. Like the Junior Diver, those students over the age of 14 must also successfully complete the same material and skills as the junior diver. Upon completion, the student will receive a wall certificate and a certification C card. This card is their proof of formal training, and they will be asked to present it whenever they wish to dive on a charter boat, have their tank filled with air, rent gear, and in many cases to purchase certain pieces of diving equipment. You must provide your own mask, fins, snorkel, and textbook: however, you are not required to have this gear until the first pool session. All other equipment needed for this class will be provided at no extra charge. Eric Kelley was certified as a diver in 1970 and has been a SCUBA instructor since He is currently a junior high school principal and owner of SCUBA Etc. in Sherman. He is a veteran of the Air Force.
