3 COURSE DESCRIPTION In the beautiful Texas Hill Country, the 9 th Annual International External Fixation Symposium (IEFS) sets the stage for outstanding faculty from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio as well as renowned International Scientists and Surgeons to present the latest in treatment strategies and outcomes for the diabetic foot and its various complications. The program provides an interactive learning experience for every health care professional involved in the surgical management of the diabetic foot. Through two and a half days of didactic lectures and hands-on cadaveric workshops, participants can gain valuable knowledge in the medical and surgical management of diabetic foot infections, trauma, Charcot reconstruction, plastic surgery, and deformity correction. TARGET AUDIENCE This symposium is designed to meet the unique educational needs of podiatric surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, vascular surgeons, residents, fellows and all other health care professionals interested in or involved in the management of diabetic foot pathology. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Understand perioperative medical management related to the diabetic foot. Describe advances in medical imaging and interpretation for diabetic foot and ankle pathology. Understand current methodology for medical and surgical treatment of diabetic foot infections. Identify implications of peripheral vascular disease on the diabetic foot and describe vascular techniques including imaging, endovascular treatments and lower extremity bypass procedures. Interpret options available for plastic surgical reconstruction of diabetic foot wounds and apply various techniques in hands-on cadaveric workshops. Describe treatment approaches for diabetic neuropathic foot and ankle trauma and deformity correction, including management of common complications. Understand diagnosis and treatment options for the diabetic Charcot foot and ankle, including postoperative rehabilitation. Effectively apply techniques for monolateral, hybrid, and circular external fixation devices in hands-on cadaveric workshops. COURSE REGISTRATION The symposium registration fee includes tuition, access to course materials, entrance to exhibit hall, continental breakfast, lunch, refreshment breaks, and a Friday evening reception. Participation in the cadaver labs requires an additional fee and there is limited space available, therefore early registration is encouraged. To enroll, please register online at If you must cancel, your tuition will be refunded less a $45 administrative fee, provided notice is received by November 17, The IEFS Committee reserves the right to limit enrollment or cancel any course no less than a week prior to the course. Should circumstances make this necessary, tuition will be refunded in full.
