1 Programs of Study The Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) offers a four-year professional program leading to the degree of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). Combined DPM/ MPH and DPM/MBA programs are also available in conjunction with Temple University graduate programs. A combined DPM/PhD program in biomedical engineering is offered in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. In addition, a seven-year accelerated BS/DPM program is available in conjunction with 44 undergraduate colleges and universities. Basic Sciences to Clinical Experiences Becoming a student at TUSPM is making a commitment to excellence in education from your first week in orientation through your graduation. During the first year, TUSPM students develop a solid foundation in the anatomical and physiological sciences, with studies highlighting microscopic and developmental anatomy, gross and lower extremity anatomy, neurosciences, bio-mechanics, physiology, biochemistry and fundamentals of podiatric medical practice. The second year focuses on microbiology and immunology, pathology, pharmacology, orthopedics, and surgery, as well as additional clinically related courses. The third and fourth years emphasize clinical experience with rotations that may include internal medicine, podiatric surgery, vascular medicine/surgery, primary podiatric medicine, anesthesia and radiology. Elective rotations may include infectious diseases, emergency medicine, endocrinology, orthopedics and diabetic wound care. PostGraduate Training All podiatric medical school graduates complete a standard two-year residency program: one year of podiatric medicine and a second year focusing on fore-foot surgery. TUSPM graduates are accepted into the most prestigious residency programs across the country, serving either traditional or medically underserved populations. A number of our graduates complete their postgraduate training within the Temple University Health System. Over 85% of our graduates continue their training beyond the standard two-year program and gain acceptance into the Temple University or other three- or four-year surgical programs in podiatric medicine. The third and fourth years focus on rear foot reconstructive surgery. Once training is complete, most graduates pursue practice opportunities as a member of a podiatric medical, surgical, multi-disciplinary, or private practice. Others may seek to practice in government-sponsored programs. Cost of Study and Housing For the academic year, the tuition for out-of-state students is $34,034; for residents of Pennsylvania, it is $30,896. We anticipate a modest 2 to 4% increase for the 2011 academic year. The cost of living, excluding tuition and fees, is estimated to be $18,220 per year for a single student. A housing complex containing 72 efficiency, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and two-bedroom with den apartments is located on campus. On-campus housing for married couples with children is also available. The Office of Student Affairs maintains a list of other convenient off-campus housing opportunities. Financial Assistance Financial assistance is available in the forms of loans, college work-study, and scholarships. TUSPM is dedicated to helping ease the financial burden of a podiatric medical school education. More than $850,000 in scholarships is awarded annually to students in all four classes. Of this amount, $500,000 is awarded to incoming students. Students seeking financial aid must complete the appropriate financial aid and loan applications. About 94 percent of TUSPM students receive some type of financial assistance. Students should contact the Office of Student Financial Services for more information at FEET. Applying to tuspm The Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine participates in the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine Application Service (AACPMAS), which allows students to complete a single set of application forms for admission to the nine colleges of podiatric medicine. An electronic web-enabled application is available for completion online at Admission is for the fall session only, except for advanced standing students. Requirements include a BS, BA, or 90 undergraduate credits, which must include six credit hours of English and eight credit hours each of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biology or zoology, and physics. All science courses must include a lab. Letters of evaluation are also required (two from health professionals, of which one must be a podiatric medical physician, and either one from a college pre-health advisory committee or two from science professors). All applications are considered incomplete until their Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores, Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores, or Dental Admission Test (DAT) scores have been received. Additionally, we invite you to apply for the School s free winter or summer internship programs, which are typically held the first week of January and June. 2 Temple University school of Podiatric Medicine: Redefining Podiatric Medical Education for the 21st Century At the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM), our mission is to educate highly qualified, ethical and professional podiatric physicians, and to advance our profession through research, quality patient care and community service. To that end, we stress early and extensive clinical education for our students. Because we are one of the few schools of podiatric medicine to be integrated with a major university with a comprehensive allopathic academic health center, our students have the unprecedented opportunity to train side by side with other Temple University physicians and health care professionals. Our third- and fourth-year students participate in rotations at the Temple University Health System, which allows for significant exposure to and training in trauma cases. Additionally, TUSPM students rotate through our Foot & Ankle Institute and hundreds of hospitals and clinical settings throughout the country. In preparation for this unparalleled clinical experience, our students have a curriculum that provides a foundation in the basic sciences that stresses the lower extremity s place in all of the body s physiological systems. Some unique qualities of tuspm: Access to the Clinical Simulation Center, which allows TU health professional students to learn from automated mannequin patients Students gain valuable skills while rotating through the Diabetes Center of Excellence With more than 50,000 patient visits per year, the Foot & Ankle Institute is the largest podiatric medical facility of its kind in the world The Leonard S. Abrams, DPM Center for Advanced Wound Healing, a state-of-theart wound care center, especially for patients with diabetes and other vascular disease The fully licensed Ambulatory Surgical Center allows patients to have foot and ankle surgery on-site without the time and cost of a hospital stay The latest diagnostic and treatment technologies, including an extremity MRI and ultrasound therapies The Gait Study Center is the most advanced facility of its kind in the United States, and offers ample opportunity for student research Our students consistently land the top residency programs in the country Expert faculty members who are regularly cited as experts in the local and national media Generous scholarship support On-campus, full-body physical therapy practice allows students to gain valuable experience Clinical Skills Lab that provides hands-on training in surgical techniques, as well as other clinical skills Combined DPM/MPH, DPM/MBA and DPM/PhD degrees available On-campus housing for students Convenient and vibrant Center City location Extensive extracurricular activities, including community service, sports, student government, student chapters of professional associations, charity-based groups and the yearbook The largest podiatric medical library in the country On-site counseling and support services Access to all the resources of Temple University and its health system 24-hour access to the state-of-the-art, 75,000-square foot Temple University TECH Center with more than 600 computer stations and 100 laptops What is a Podiatric Physician? Podiatric medicine is the branch of medicine concentrating on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of problems and diseases of the foot, ankle and lower extremity. A practitioner in this field is a DPM, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, also known as a podiatrist, and is recognized legally and professionally as an integral member of the health care team. In the health care system of today, it is important to focus on the whole patient, rather than an isolated medical problem. Podiatric medicine is no exception. Podiatric physicians don t treat feet; they treat patients. Serious problems of the foot or lower extremity can adversely affect the overall health and well-being of a patient. Conversely, a systemic disorder such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease may manifest itself first through potentially serious foot problems. These complex relationships demand a skilled practitioner, educated to detect and treat a variety of related diseases. There are many areas of specialty for the practicing podiatric physician, including: For further information on Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, please return this card.
