4 Example 1: water provision in Quito (Ecuador) Quito (capital of Ecuador 2 M inhabitants) 80% of water supply coming from two ecological reserves (Cayambe- Coca 400,000 ha and An.sana 120,000 ha). Users: farmers, hydropower companies, industries and households (paying differen.ated rates) FONAG: fund for the management of these rates (USD 7 Million in 2009 with administra.on costs limited to between 10 and 20% of total expenditures). Benefits: securing present and future water supplies for Quito through the protec.on of 65,000 ha of watersheds (with more than 1,800 people receiving direct economic benefits associated with watershed management and conserva.on) UNEP, 2010 Antisana volcano and city of Quito A. 5 Example 2: water provision in Colombia Direct supply of water to 30% of Colombian popula.on (20 M inhabitants) and indirect supply to 50%: PNN Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta: 1,500,000 inhab. PNN Los Nevados: 2,500,000 inhab. PNN Farallones de Cali: 1,500,000 inhab. PNN Chingaza: 5,000,000 inhab. Provision of water to 12 Irriga*on Districts of big and medium size in 5 Departments (in total 207,849 ha managed by 12,975 users and 147,301 beneficiaries.
