4 01 Why is required an improvement in technology? Because ICT helps to increase productivity and productivity is related with a country s wealth GDP per capita = GDP / number of citizens GDP per capita= (GDP/number of employees) x (number of employees / number of citizens) GDP per capita = f(productivity) x Activity Rate of population A country s wealth can only be increased through Activity Rate growth (more people working related to total population) and / or productivity growth. ICT help in productivity growth, that is why they are so important 4

7 01 Technology adoption in all levels of the society is essential for achieving productivity growth In the USA, as a difference with Europe, productivity growth comes from sectors who use ICT, no from sectors that produce it. This fact indicates that economic advantages of ICT are harnessed by all the American economy. This is not true in Europe. Differences between USA and Europe are found in the sectors that use ICT. 8 01 Productivity in Spanish economy pales in comparison to European productivity Spain has lost productivity compared to UE during the last years. It only increased 0,7% between 1996 and 2002 on a year over year basis. 8

26 03 Digital inclusion is the goal of the most important programs in Fundación Telefónica Excellence in education through ICT use Created in 1998 Fundación Telefónica as an agreement among the 16 most important organisations in the Spanish education communities (CONCAPA, CCOO, UGT, CEAPA...) Aimed at education in first and second cycles International program: portals in Spain, Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Perú and México Strong commitment with teachers learning of the use of ICT 26
