4 Continuing Education Credits Purpose To share evidence based information in pain & symptom management and end of life care, along with communication tools to better care for patients with serious illness. At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to: medical care of a patient with serious illness. Target Audience Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Nurses, Nursing Home Administrators, Social Workers, Chaplains and other healthcare professionals interested in hospice, palliative care and/or issues related to serious illness. Continuing Medical Education (CME) This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Arkansas and Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. It is the policy of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine to ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor in all provided or jointly provided educational activities. All individuals who are in a position to control the content of the educational activity (course/activity directors, planning committee members, staff, teachers, or authors of CME) must disclose all relevant financial relationships they have with any commercial interests as well as the nature of the relationship. Plenary Session 9:50-10:00 a.m. HPCAA Heart Awards Presentation Plenary Session 10:00-11:00 a.m. David E. Smith, MD, MA - Advanced Care Planning - How can we do it better? : Dr. Smith will discuss the current state of advance directives, the different types available in Arkansas, and other utilities not yet available in Arkansas. Plenary Session 11:00-12:00 p.m. Robin Devan, MD - Communication Techniques in Palliative Care : Dr. Devan will describe SPIKES techniques in breaking bad news, techniques in goals of care discussions, and barriers and solutions to conflict at end of life. Concurrent Session 1:00-2:00 p.m. Nichole Dorn, LMSW, CTRS - Elvis and Ethics : Dorn will review the social work code of ethics from NASW, identify methods of resolution to ethical dilemmas, and ethical dilemmas that have caused a delay in patient care. Masil George, MD - Neuropathic Pain : Dr. George will describe methods for diagnosing neuropathic pain, ideas for formulating a treatment plan, and possible side effects and interactions. Eve demontmollin, RN, CPN & Wendy Rice, RN, CPN - Heart to Hearts: Fulfilling a Dream Through Concurrent Care : demontmollin and Rice will review methods to identify non-traditional patients who are appropriate for pediatric palliative and home based concurrent hospice care, effective collaboration with palliative care providers to assist families in goals upon discharge home, and the steps necessary to successfully discharge a complex pediatric patient to home based hospice care. Concurrent Sessions 2:15-3:15 p.m. Kimberly Curseen, MD - Cultural Competency : Dr. Curseen will describe barriers to cultural competent communication, tools to communicate in a culturally competent way, and the importance of cultural competent communication. Kasi Townes, LMSW - Roundtable Goals of Care Discussion : Townes will facilitate discussion in identifying ways to process and discuss goals of care, and increase skills level through role playing. Michael Chandler, PharmD, BCPS - Opioid-Induced Tolerance and Hyperalgesia : Mr. Chandler will discuss common terminology and prevalence of Opioid-Induced Tolerance and Hyperalgesia, pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics of OIT &OIH, and strategies for prevention & treatment of OIT & OIH. Concurrent Session 3:45-4:45 p.m. Tresa Hooks, LMSW, OSW-C, ASHP-SW & Diane Morgan MSN, BSN, APN, GCNS-BC, ACHPN - Veteran Issues/Update : Hooks and Morgan will give a basic overview of the DVA Aide and Attendance financial benefit, and the DVA Castrophically Disabled Procedure. Ayman Abdel-Halim, MD - Emergencies in Palliative Medicine : Dr. Abdel-Halim will describe six emergencies in palliative medicine and their palliation, and probable outcomes. Kimberly Curseen, MD - Hospice with Long Term Care Facilities : Dr. Curseen will describe the natural relationship between hospice and long term care, barriers to the relationship and how to address them, and practically how hospice and longer term care regulations interact.
6 Day 2 - Friday, October 2 Plenary & Concurrent Sessions Plenary Session 8:15-9:45 a.m. Martha Twaddle, MD, FACP, FAAHPM - Support Across the Continuum of Advanced Illness : Dr. Twaddle will discuss models to promote effective care coordination, characterize current models for palliative care, home based models including hospice, and the collaborative model of generalist or champion palliative care. Plenary Session 9:55-11:00 a.m. Sarah E. Harrington, MD - Updates in Palliative Care Literature : Dr. Harrington will review 6 recent studies in hospice and palliative care literature, and practical applications for research results. Plenary Session 11:00-12:00 p.m. Debra Wilson - Advocacy 101: How to Leverage the Public/Private Partnership to Improve Patient Care : Wilson will describe how the state and federal governments operate, how providers, caregivers and patients can impact the legislative process, and skills for communicating with elected officials. Concurrent Session 1:00-2:00 p.m. Timothy Boling, PhD - Dealing with Difficult Patients : Boling will identify the causes of difficult behaviors, how to successfully intervene with patients, and identifying when it s time to ask for help. Sarah Harrington, MD - Prognosis and Hospice Referrals for Non-cancer Diagnoses : Dr. Harrington will review NHPCO guidelines for hospice eligibility on non-cancer diagnoses, current evidenced-based prognostication tools, and 3 cases of patients with non-cancer diagnoses. Nichole Dorn, LMSW, CTRS - Elvis and Ethics : Dorn will review the social work code of ethics from NASW, identify methods of resolution to ethical dilemmas, and ethical dilemmas that have caused a delay in patient care. Concurrent Session 2:15 3:15 p.m. Leslie Landrum, MD, FACP - Adventures in Advanced Directives : Dr. Landrum will review Arkansas state law, a case presentation with challenging advance directives including addressing inherent inconsistencies, and a case study with clear patient advance directives but family reneges. Carolyn Brown, BS, Med, RN, ARM, CWS, FACCWS - Palliative Wound Management Workshop: Be the best you can be : Brown will differentiate between pressure, venous, arterial and diabetic wounds and discuss appropriate palliative wound care goals, realistic goals and wound challenges at end-of-life, gentle treatment interventions for palliative wound care, and care plan and treatment options for multiple patient scenarios. Mark S. Thomas, MD - Palliative Care and Advanced Illness Management : Dr. Thomas will share the relationship between palliative care and population health management, financial models that support palliative health management, and efforts to develop a coordinated system of care management to serious ill patients. Concurrent Session 3:45-4:45 p.m. Carrie Calhoon, MSW, LCSW & Diane Campbell, MSW, LCSW - Turning the Table: Exploring the relationship between palliative care/hospice professionals personal experience and their professional experience with death/dying : Calhoon and Campbell will facilitate the learner in reviewing their own experiences with death and dying, will present an experimental exercise in preparing for one s own death, and share ways to integrate personal history of death and loss with present experience of dying. Andrea Allen, MD, MHA - Assessment and Treatment of Delirium at End of Life : Dr. Allen will demonstrate the importance of identifying delirium at end of life, the difference between delirium and dementia, and will review the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) to identify delirium. Rosalie Otters, PhD, MSW, D.Min. - Cultural Perspectives in Death and Dying : Otters will describe traditional Western understanding of death and dying and its varieties of expression, and define religious and spiritual beliefs including examples of sociocultural diversity, religious and non-religious beliefs, in U.S. and Arkansas.
